Upright Bass for the Modern Gigging Bassist

The NS Design WAV5 Double Bass captures the essence of the acoustic upright bass, making it ideal for bassists entering the world of electric instruments. The first thing acoustic players will notice about the WAV5 is how compact and lightweight it is compared to an acoustic. The WAV5 doesn't skimp on sound, however. Its solid maple body brings fullness and clarity to every note you play. And whether you're bowing or plucking, the WAV5's Polar Pickup System produces top-notch plugged-in tone. You'll love the playability of the WAV5's graduated rosewood fingerboard, and interchangeable support systems ensure a customized playing experience. The NS Design WAV5 Double Bass is a stellar combination of design, performance, and affordability.

Flexible design and meticulous construction

At Sweetwater, we know that gigging musicians are looking for maximum flexibility out of their gear. The WAV5 is compact, lightweight, and tailor-made for bassists that are on the move. This electric upright bass sports a solid maple body and neck, which deliver the richness and clarity you demand, and its flexible Polar Pickup System tailors to your playing style, whether you're aiming for a traditional acoustic response for bowing and percussive plucking, or an even, sustained plucked sound that's more suited to jazz. Interchangeable support systems (sold separately) optimize your playing comfort.

Custom-designed electronics deliver the sounds you need

The NS Design WAV5 sports a self-powered, custom Polar Pickup System. A pizz/arco switch optimizes the pickup's response for plucked or bowed playing, giving you the control, clarity, and richness you want from a bass, no matter your playing style. The WAV5 uses a passive circuit with high-impedance output that doesn't require a battery. NS Design's innovative JackPot potentiometers work differently than standard pots. Instead of continuously grounding a portion of the signal, the JackPot has a rotary switch that delivers 100% of the signal to your amp, DI, or mixer. You get all the output you need and a full range of tone that works with any system.

Coform fingerboard — a high-tech alternative to traditional tonewoods

Pairing maple with a high-tech acrylic formula, NS Design's Coform fingerboard material was designed in the interest in environmental conservation as well as innovation. Coform has an ebony-like appearance, yet it has less friction than wood for fast playability. The Coform fingerboard features uniform thickness throughout, and is harder and more durable than ebony or rosewood. And NS Design explains that its uniform acrylic surface "enhances harmonic content, strengthening the lows and extending the highs for a fuller, more dynamic, articulated and sustained response."

The latest Steinberger masterpiece

Ned Steinberger breathed new vision and life into stringed instruments when he introduced the L2 bass at Summer NAMM in 1979. Innovatively designed without headstocks, the L2s astonished the music world, and prototypes were quickly sold to such esteemed players as John Entwistle of The Who, Tony Levin of King Crimson, and Andy West of Dixie Dregs. Since then, Steinberger basses and guitars have continued to impress musicians - and engineers - the world over. Their cutting-edge Headless Tuning systems make way for stability never thought possible, while their Radius body shape, Fusion necks, and EMG humbucking pickup systems allow for an extensive range of tonal possibilities.

NS Design WAV5 Double Bass Features:

  • Realistic bowed and pizzicato upright sounds in a portable package

  • Polar Pickup System with pizz/arco selector switch tailors to your playing style

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!

Reviews

Just! WOW!
This arrived today and it's been out of the box for about half an hour....this review may be updated, may not. Lol

I've dabbled on an acoustic upright in the past, but lately, I've been playing a 5 string bass guitar at church and with friends jamming and such. Therefore, I opted for the non-traditional 5 string in the upright, just to have the low B when I needed/wanted it.

After pickin on a couple songs I know well, the feel is amazing. It plays like butter. Tones are warm and sustained. The arco/pizzicatto switch and tone and volume knobs are easily accessible while playing for fast adjustments on the fly. My amp (Ampeg BA112V2) gives me some added tone adjustments if needed.

This is a basic upright bass. There's nothing fancy here. Solid maple body looks and feels good. Tuners are simple but smooth and easy to turn. Strings are smooth yet easy to feel and "grab" from two or three different positions and angles I tried.

There are upgrades one could do, i.e. Different strings, tuners, etc....and I'm sure one could add or replace pickups and such, but there's also the NXT and CR models available. I bought this one for the simplicity, and because I don't need all of the extras. Maybe later, but for now, this is perfect for what I was wanting.

All in all, one hell of an entry level EUB. Very much worth the price and like anything else, proper care and I'm sure this will last longer than ill ever need it.

Lovely instrument
I'm very happy with this purchase. I've played bass guitar for many years, and decided I'd like to try a stand-up type bass for different tones, and something I could bow, as well. This fits the bill, and I'm very pleased with it so far.

Wow
I play an upright but transporting even a 1/2 size can be a daunting endeavour. I decided to try this one as a way to get my upright sound and feel while not sharing the front seat with my gear. The bass took a little educating myself but the sounds are really sweet. I love the quality of the build and the Arco/ Pizzicato switch and pickup system give you a great way to keep a string bass sound in a small package. It takes a little getting used to the way it responds under the bow, but a little practice and you're all set.
Considering the Endpin stand in the future. Great Bass for an upright player looking to play crowded stages.
