Inspired Re-creation of a Legendary Small-diaphragm Condenser

Their acclaimed compressors and preamps have famously upset the pro audio price/performance ratio. When Warm Audio turned its attention to the granddaddy of small-diaphragm FET condenser microphones, you know it had to be good. And it is. Flash back to any top recording studio in the 1970s. You'll see the venerable '84 everywhere. Sweetwater engineers who have worked with different generations of this perennial studio favorite know that the vintage ones have a warmer, more forgiving sonic character. It's these circuit designs — dating back nearly half a century — that Warm Audio closely followed for the WA-84. And this edition features both cardioid and omnidirectional capsules for greater flexibility. Stellar performance, top-shelf parts, and amazing value: that's the Warm formula — and the WA-84 nails it.

Quality components make the Warm difference

Warm Audio doesn't cut corners on components, but they do order parts and build in quantity, which keeps costs down and delivers amazing value. Featuring a meticulously crafted vintage reproduction capsule, WA-84 is built with premium all-discrete components that include Fairchild transistors, Wima capacitors, and a CineMag USA transformer. Designed for professional commercial and home studios, live sound reinforcement, and broadcast applications, the WA-84 has the uncanny ability to finesse a wide range of sources, such as acoustic guitars, double bass, drums and percussion, piano, strings, brass and woodwinds, and more.

What can the WA-84 do for you?

Every studio needs at least one pair of high-quality small-diaphragm condenser mics, and the Warm Audio WA-84 is designed after a legendary one. With its versatile cardioid polar pattern and 10dB pad, you can use the WA-84 on any instrument — with world-class results. It makes snares and tom toms sound huge. It's great for drum overheads, capturing cymbals with warmth and vibrancy. It's perfect for adding a bit of room to complement a close dynamic or ribbon mic on a guitar cabinet. Engage the pad, and move the mic right up on the speaker grille.

Double your value with this stereo pair

The WA-84 is an ideal choice for piano, vibraphone, marimba, congas, strings, woodwinds, and so much more. The list goes on, but suffice to say: You haven't lived until you've heard a grand piano spring to life when miked with a pair of WA-84s. For drum room mics, use two of them and nuke the stereo signal with a fast limiter. Positively explosive! Considering its amazing price, you're wise to consider a pair of these excellent mics for recording tracks in stereo. You'll not only doubling your value — you're getting a valuable addition to your mic locker you'll reach session after session!

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!

Reviews

Great For Large Ensembles
I am not a professional sound engineer. I am merely an insane hobbyist. I shoot videos for my son's high school band performances both in marching band as well as concert and jazz band. I was dissatisfied with the stereo shotgun mic I was using. While it is an excellent microphone for what it does and I will still use it for when I need to move quickly, the WA-84 stereo pair sound much better both in terms of dynamic range and stereo separation. These are on a whole other level. I have used them for marching band and I can hear everything on the field from the quiet flute to the deep bass drum and gong sounds. I am truly impressed. I run these into the Zoom F6 and it sounds fantastic. If you are looking for a stereo pair to record larger ensembles, these are a great choice. I also used them as overhead mics for my son's drum set and it sounds very close to a professional recording in a studio. Again, to my lay ears, these are fantastic.
outstanding
I am using these mics to record my classical guitar music. I tried these mics seeing that the response curve is near flat in the 1-10 kHz range, and by golly that's exactly what I hear and what I like about them. The sound is absolutely outstanding with a natural, smooth, beautiful top end compared to other sdc's I've used, including the benchmark Neumann KM184's. Having the omni capsules included with the premium package is a bonus.

Wow!
These mics take me right back to my time working in first rate studios in the late 70s and 80s. I don't have the means to do a direct comparison with the German target mics, and comparing current audio to a decades old memory is not even slightly objective or scientific, but my subjective reaction is that these are something special, and fresh out of the time machine from that era.
They are clear and detailed without being harsh. They have extension into very low frequencies without being muddy, and the cardiod capsule's off-axis rejection is unusually good for an SDC.
I can't compare the omni capsule with anything, because I have very rarely used omni mics, but I am interested in exploring some options with them.
Great for the price!
I have owned Neumann KM184,183 and original KM84 and 83 and these are much more comparable to the 84/83 than the 184. They exhibit a warm mid-range and clear un-hyped high end very much like the 84/83 that they are patterned after. Grab a pair with the extra omni caps and enjoy.

Noisy.
I bought these with high expectations. Unfortunately, this is yet another Warm product which failed to meet quality control standards.

I put these mics up on harp (acoustic). Note this is a very quiet and delicate source. Should be a perfect fit for a high quality small diaphragm condenser mic. Unfortunately, these mics have some sort of high frequency cyclical (RF-sounding) interference. I immediately pulled them and put in my Neumann KM184 mics, same mic cables and preamps - Neumanns were absolutely silent. Put the WA-84s up again after the session and the noise was back.

I have returned the WA-84s for a refund. I would also note this is not my first Warm product to arrive defective. Love their ideas and designs, disappointed in their quality control.
