The 1073 Legend Lives in Warm Audio's Splendid WA73-EQ

The legendary 1073 wrote the book on characterful mic preamplification and EQ. These venerable circuits helped define the punchy sound of '70s rock — and countless recordings and live concerts ever since. Today, this coveted tone can be yours for a song, with the Warm Audio WA73-EQ mic/line/instrument preamp. In both design and performance, the WA73-EQ pays homage to the revered British console lineage that started it all. Throughout the audio industry, the 1073 is considered the holy grail of preamps and EQs, with a rich, sweet, and bold tonality that's ideal for making audacious statements with your music. After years of R&D, painstaking reverse-engineering, and countless hours of listening, Warm Audio captured the sonic essence of this classic perfectly in their boutique WA73-EQ. With 80dB of gain and a fully discrete transformer-balanced signal path, the sound is a revelation: harmonically rich bottom end, focused midrange, and slightly resonant highs.

Handcrafted with top-quality parts

Boasting weapons-grade build quality with discrete, handwired Class A circuits and top-drawer parts such as UK-made Carnhill transformers and Blore Edwards mil-spec, dual-concentric switch pots, the WA73-EQ has 80dB of gain on tap so you can capture subdued sources with your favorite ribbon mic. Your ribbons and condensers will sound heavenly; you'll even be gobsmacked when you hear how authoritative your dynamic mics sound. Cranking the input stage and backing off the output gain enhances your tracks with tasty vintage-style coloration. Topping off the feature set is an instrument jack, polarity reverse, 48V phantom power, and switchable impedance for tonal variation and to optimally match a variety of microphones.

Optimize every source — and microphone

There is no source that doesn't sound amazing through the Warm Audio WA73-EQ. With judicious mic selection and placement, drums are larger-than-life; DI bass and keyboards sound massive and synths become trance-inducing; electric guitars soar; vocals rule. Pianos and acoustic guitars are resplendent. Orchestral instruments — strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion — achieve ineffable lushness and dimension. You can even use the WA73-EQ as a tone-shaping tool to run stems or complete mixes through. Hear what the WA73-EQ can do for your own recordings. It's transformative.

Definitive British EQ

The EQ section of the WA73-EQ adheres to the classic 1073 circuit topology. The vintage 1073 is the holy grail of EQ, and the WA73-EQ nails its sonics and behavior (complete with its fabled harmonic distortion). It's a three-band affair, with HF shelving at 10, 12, and 16kHz; midband peaking with selectable center frequencies at 360Hz, 700Hz, 1.6kHz, 3.2kHz, 4.8kHz, and 7.2kHz; and LF shelving, selectable at 35Hz, 60Hz, 110Hz, and 220Hz. A highpass filter, selectable at 50Hz, 80Hz, 160Hz, and 300Hz, lets you trim your signals of unwanted low end. If you've never worked with a 1073-style EQ before, all we can say is: you're in for a serious treat. It's worth noting that the original 1073 offered only a fixed 10kHz shelf, and the additional high-frequency flexibility afforded by the WA73-EQ is most welcome.

UK Custom Carnhill transformers

1073-loving engineers at Sweetwater perk up when the conversation turns to the component history of these classic circuits, and signal transformers are a frequent topic of discussion. Vintage 1073s used different transformer variants throughout their production run; but the most coveted were the very first ones made by Marinair Radar, due to their fluid and forgiving nature that saturates sweetly when pushed. They have been known to bring engineers to tears when they hear how gorgeous their mixes sound through them! Warm Audio turned to Carnhill Transformers of Cambridgeshire, UK, to design meticulous replicas of these most desirable early 1073 transformers. The results are stunning, and — to our ears — tantalizingly close to early vintage 1073s.

Warm left no stone unturned

A vital yet not-often-discussed component of these classic British circuits is the different types of capacitors and output transistors used. To maintain the integrity of the original circuits, Warm decided to use high-quality tantalum and polystyrene capacitors in the signal path and an output transistor choice that delivers smoother results at higher gain settings than what is commonly found in today's 1073-style preamps. All considered, Warm Audio's monumental effort to design a no-compromise product has paid off handsomely. You'll appreciate this every time you plug into the WA73-EQ and hit record.

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Best sub $ mic pre on the market

Without a single doubt, this is the best sub $ preamp you can buy today for vocals.

Warning: Some engineers may find the following opinion controversial.

I think it sounds better than the Neve's on the market today.

Why? The current Neve 73's don't quite have the bite that made the classic units so desirable in the studio. That extra sizzle that just doesn't seem to be present in their newer releases.

This one from Warm Audio… wow. The character you can pull out of it is almost 1/1 with what you would expect out of a classic 73. I've heard people report that it isn't as "silky" in the high end when pushing the gain. This is because they are driving the input too hard and distorting the signal from the start. When done correctly, this 73 shines so good.

The EQ controls are great for taming the small unwanted elements before compression, or even adding in some sass. The knobs and buttons feel wonderful.

This is the most used pre in my studio, and for good reason. Shoutout to Warm for the sauce.

I love this unit

As the first time owner of a WA 73 EQ, my first warm product for my home college music lab/home studio, I have to say they did a great job on building this unit. The sound is what I would expect from a 73 style preamp and the EQ is useful and musical. I have used it side by side with a Neve 1073 2 channel preamp and can say they compliment each other well. For my main vocal chain, not using any tubes, I think this console preamp is an excellent addition to any home or pro studio looking for a budget option 73 or 273. The saturation at higher gain is interesting distortion but I like the clean tones I get from this. Vocals, Guitar, Bass, Keys, anything you put through this gets that classic analog flavor. I have to shout out my rep at Sweetwater Tim and Andrew at Warm Audio for their help picking the right piece for my studio. I can't wait to build a tube channel and get an WA8000/MPX/1B/EQP WA. Someday I will have that chain for my artist projects. For now I have just as good a chain with the 73 EQ, a BLA Bluey, and Roswell Pro Audio Mini K87 / 67x mixed pair mic package. This time we will go no tubes all transformers, next time we will go all tubes and transformers.

Perfect for my needs.

Being a freelance engineer, I work out of multiple studios in different cities and not every studio room has a 1073 style preamp. I bought this to be able to have a 1073 style preamp anywhere I work from. The WA 73-EQ has not disappointed me. I have had it in my rig for about 2 months now, and has driven with me thousands of miles and I have not had any issues with it. The more I use it, the more I understand the sound and the more I hear how it reacts with my microphones. Learning this tool has given me more than reaching for a piece of gear I don't use all the time. For example, Having the tone option in the front is invaluable (If you know, vintage neves have the impedance switch on the back and its not easy to get to all the time). The EQ section is smooth, but can be aggressive if you push it. The output fader lets me drive the preamp if I need to get more color (Drive the vocal for effect or use it to smash some drum mics). Even having the option to plug in via XLR from the front or back is a subtle thing that can get overlooked, but when I have a vocalist in the control room with me, I can just plug in without reaching to the back of the unit. I have really enjoyed having this unit in my rack and I don't plan on selling it. The WA 73-EQ was exactly what I was missing for my portable rig.

Great preamp, brittle EQ

I used this preamp extensively over two years before deciding to sell it. It sounds GREAT on vocals and bass, as I would expect from a '73 style pre. Its major shortcoming is the EQ section, I ended up using my WA73 that lacked the EQ section much more. Anytime I kicked the EQ circuit in it would never yield musical results. The High shelf was very brittle, and not airy as I would have hoped for. I found myself tracking with no EQ and using '73 EQ plugins every time, which defeats the purpose of owning this unit.

I have decided to sell this and purchase a BAE unit, as I move from consumer grade products to professional grade products. I think that the main takeaway, this is a great consumer grade unit and it is priced as such.
