The F212 with a unique backstory
There are many Fazioli F212 pianos around the world, but the one Vienna Symphonic Library chose to record has special qualifications for the job. At six feet and 11 inches, the Fazioli F212 is regarded as the classic size for both performance and teaching; the F212 that served for the basis of this library happens to be owned by pianist and film composer Mick Baumeister, who is also known as the co-creator of the Hornberg hb1 MIDI breath controller. After acquiring this piano as a self-given birthday present in 1998, Baumeister enlisted the help of Mr. Paolo Fazioli himself to bring the instrument to his standards after he felt unsatisfied with tweaking its intonation. Fazioli proceeded to replace the entire hammer row with a brand-new one, allowing the instrument to sing with beautifully rounded tones across its entire range like never before. Of course, what other piano could the Vienna Symphonic Library choose than this Fazioli F212 to include in its esteemed virtual piano collection?
Customize your sound in Vienna Synchron Pianos
In addition to the sonic versatility of mixing multiple mic signals, Studio Fazioli F212 includes the Vienna Synchron Pianos software (free download), which offers bountiful options for shaping your sound and customizing your playing experience. Boasting a high-performance playback engine, Synchron Pianos provides a pro-grade mixer and a broad range of effects, including equalization, compression, saturation, algorithmic reverb, delay, chorus, flanger, a rotary simulator, and more. You can change the volume of piano body resonances, sympathetic strings, and pedal noises right from the main Play window. In the Edit view, you can adjust EQ, volume, tuning, dynamic range, and more for each individual key.
Mix multiple mic positions to taste
Before recording the balanced tones and wide dynamic range of the Fazioli F212, Vienna Symphonic Library knew that their Stage B room would perfectly capture the sounds of this majestic grand piano — and Sweetwater has to say they made the perfect choice! This phenomenal-sounding 739-square-foot live room's height varies from 11.5 to 14.75 feet, providing a controlled acoustic environment with less ambience than Stage A, the large Synchron main hall. In Stage B, the Fazioli F212 sounds intimate and direct, with plenty of body and fullness. VSL recording engineers used several high-end stereo microphone arrays to capture the piano and the room — from condenser to tube to ribbon microphones, it's all here. They even opted for the use of a Decca tree for impeccable stereo sound. In the Fazioli F212 entire library, you can mix these multiple microphone arrays to taste, carefully cultivating this gorgeous grand piano to your specific requirements.
