Sweetwater-produced Prog Rock Ukulele Album!

The band is called UniKuE. The music is progressive rock – played on ukuleles. Seriously. The UniKuE concept was born when South African bassist Bakithi Kumalo (Paul Simon) made a visit to the Sweetwater Studios with his bass uke. Producer Mark Hornsby loved the sound of the bass and wanted to do something that featured the instrument. Mark, along with drummer Nick D’Virgilio and guitarist Don Carr, came up with the idea of recording a few songs using not only the bass uke, but the whole ukulele family. Bakithi was recruited to play on a couple of the tracks (Steely Dan’s “Kid Charlemagne” and Jethro Tull’s “Living In The Past”). A few weeks later, guitarist Adrian Belew (Frank Zappa, King Crimson) was in the Sweetwater Studios for a recording session; when Don asked Adrian what King Crimson song would be good for a ukulele project, Adrian replied with “Frame By Frame” – and even offered to play some uke on the track. A few more songs were added to the list — Rush’s “Closer To The Heart," Led Zeppelin’s “Going To California," and the amazing Yes song “Roundabout."

When bassist Dave Martin joined the Sweetwater Studios team, he added U-Bass parts to the other four songs. Vocals were sung by Kat Bowser (“Closer to the Heart,” “Roundabout”), Nick D’Virgilio (“Frame By Frame,” Living In The Past”), Don Carr (“Kid Charlemagne”), and Carolyn Martin (“Going to California”). Nick felt that a full-sized drum set might overpower the ukuleles used on the project, so he chose a Ludwig Breakbeats kit to complement the sound of the recordings.

The result is the UniKue EP – 6 songs, recorded using a variety of ukuleles, drums, and vocals. No guitars were used during the making of this album.

Track listing:

  1. Living In The Past
  2. Closer To The Heart
  3. Frame By Frame
  4. Kid Charlemagne
  5. Going To California
  6. Roundabout

Reviews

UniKuE
UniKue is more than a "concept band". It is an "musical juggernaut" that so craftfully melds the best of Prog and Claasic Rock with the pleasing sweetness of instruments that until now were mostly used to play Hawaiian music at a luau, namely ukuleles. What Nick D"Vigilio, Mark Hornsby, and the other gifted musicians from Sweetwater that make up UniKuE have put together is fully capable of honoring many genres of music in the future. Having heard them first at Morsefest 2017 in Nashville as an opener for the Neal Morse Band was a huge surprise and a real treat for all who were there. The "Spirit of Aloha" is alive and well in UnKue, and we should all send this band one big "Aloha nui loa" for their own creations of Yes" Roundabout, Steely Dan"s Kid Charlemagne, and Led Zeppelin"s Goin To California for starters. Hey!, has anyone other than me come to the conclusion that UniKuE would be a gigantic hit in Hawai"i too? And I for one would go to Hawai"i just too see them woo the islanders. They will fit right in with all types of Kamaaina (locals). Please buy this CD, and you will beg for more! Skip the grass skirts and the poi, but don"t miss out on UniKuE. Mahalo!

Unexpectedly Awesome!
UniKuE is unique. Heard this performed live at Morsefest 2017. Great instrumentation, singing and song selection. Went to buy a copy in the lobby, however, the CD's sold out very quickly. But I did get to speak with Nick. I only wish if I were as talented that I would be as humble and gracious as Mr. D'Virgilio. If you love Prog you will love this CD. If you love Prog and Ukuleles your head just might explode! BUY THIS CD!
Love it!!!
I saw UniKue at Morsefest 2017 and they brought the house down! Great selection of classic rock/prog music. Great musicians. Nick is great on the drums, as usual. Highly recommended!
Not To Be Missed!
My husband and I were lucky enough to see UniKuE at Morsefest 2017 in Nashville over Labor Day weekend. We got one of the coveted copies of the CD there, and we were BLOWN away! Amazing musicianship and quality to not be missed! I loved it live, and I love to relive it by listening to the CD!
Are album reviews worth anything?
This is a music CD. Put it in a CD player and assuming your CD player works, sound comes out. The CD was fully functional and well packaged. /s

This album is an interesting concept that comes together quite well. It is well-executed, though the songwriting does occasionally feel generic. The playing however is something else and alone makes this album worth a second listen for me. I definitely think this was $10 well spent.

Is the music my cup of coffee? Not really, but I don't regret the time I spent listening to the album.
