Pro-level Interface for Mac, PC, and iPad

In a market saturated with USB interfaces for home recording, Steinberg’s UR22C stands out from the crowd. This USB interface showcases top-notch build quality and high-definition audio along with advanced connectivity that make it the perfect interface for the masses. Want to plug into a Mac or PC using USB 3.0? It’s got you covered. Recording your mixtape on your iPad or other USB-C device? Not a problem. The UR22C has flexible I/O options thanks to its dual mic/line inputs, switchable phantom power, MIDI I/O, and TRS main outputs. Steinberg has gone all-out designing the UR22C USB Interface to provide you with a pro-level recording experience no matter what gear you’re using.

Versatile connection options for any rig

The UR22C was designed to be compatible with nearly any rig. This compact interface supports Core Audio, AISO, and WDM standards. This allows you to use the Steinberg UR22C with any DAW supporting these universal standards — a feature that’s appreciated at Sweetwater. For power, you can choose between USB 3.0 and 5V DC.

Included software for your computer or iPad

When you receive your UR22C, you’ll receive a free download of Cubase AI. Cubase AI is a light version of Steinberg’s Mac/Windows production software. For your iPad, you can download Cubasis LE, a full production studio with features that have been optimized for touchscreen control. For added convenience, projects you create on Cubasis LE can be opened up in Cubase on your studio computer. The ability to capture ideas on the go and take them back to the studio make using the UR22C a no-brainer.

Steinberg UR22C USB Audio Interface Features:

  • Windows, macOS, and iOS cross-platform compatibility for superior flexibility
  • Class-A D-PRE microphone preamps with +48V phantom power
  • Dual combination inputs support instruments and mic connections
  • USB 3.0 to USB-C connector can connect to most modern devices
  • Latency-free monitoring has mix balance controls
  • MIDI I/O allows you to synch with outboard hardware
  • Separate headphone level control
  • Switchable power source: USB 3.0 or 9V DC

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Drivers Matter

The most over-looked aspect of any USB interface is the drivers. Choose a vendor who will support the device with good drivers into the future.

For example, my ten year old Digidesign interface, which is still entirely serviceable, can't be used anymore because Digi hasn't updated the drivers since 2010. The installer comes with C++ redistributable 2005 and an ancient copy of iLoc software and forces you to install all of it to get the drivers. Something in that witches brew caused my Windows 10 computer to not boot. Went into safe mode removed the drivers and it booted. Did it again, same thing. Those horrible drivers are still up on Avid's downloads page last time I checked. Tried open source ASIO drivers and it works but sometimes have to reboot and computer makes a big thump sound when it boots. Unplugging and plugging the USB usually gets it working, but sometimes crashes the computer. So time for a new interface.

Point of that sad story is that drivers matter and one of the reasons I chose Yamaha/Steinberg because I think they will support the device into the future with good quality driver updates.

It's a well built device as you would expect from Steinberg. Construction is solid, pots are silky. I like USB 3 instead of USB 2. I like the +48V button on back because I will never use it. It comes with a lite version of Cubase, but I'm still learning Ableton, so I'll stick with that.

The unit has some features of interest to electric guitarists. Input 2 has a high-Z switch. Plugging a guitar into a low-Z input or a cheap interface that only claims to be high impedance, will suck your tone. The device has a DSP chip and something called dspMixFx [needs a new name] software that claims zero percent latency running plugins in the box instead of your computer. I will vouch for it, there is no discernable latency. There's a channel strip with graphic EQ, reverb and compression. One of the four Yamaha-branded software guitar amps has chorus and vibrato.

While none of this will replace my Kemper, with some tweaking, the software sounds pretty good, very usable. The zero latency is nice and I've been using it a lot lately. Even if latency is low, you may not notice it, but it effects your performance. This part was a pleasant surprise so I'm happy with my purchase.

USB to analog

I use it with Smaart to dial in the sound system then it becomes my computer audio interface into my mixing console possible.
Works well doing both jobs. I bought one for my home stereo

Works great, would buy again.

I purchased the UR22C for recording our church services. It is easy to hook up with a single USB-C cable that both transfers data and powers the device. I'm getting good quality sound, and it is easy to use but also has plenty of options for configuration and tweaking. We are using this with a MacBook Pro on a normal basis but it also works fine with iOS devices (although you will need a separate power adapter in that case). Next time I'm in the market for an audio interface this will be my first choice depending on the application.

It's 32 bit, and it just sounds better

I own a couple of other USB audio interfaces, and this is the one that sounds the best. The mic preamps are a tad quieter, and it sounds a bit more transparent than the others, and does a better job of capturing subtlties in the textures of musical instruments, drums, and vocals.

Most interaces have 24 bit analog/digital and digital/analog converters. This interface has 32 bit converters, and if your audio software supports it you should try recording in 32 bit (integer, not floating point). Using 32 bits means your recordings are captured with greater resolution than is possible when using 24 or 16 bits, and you can hear the difference in how complex musical textures are handled.

Another feature that sets this interface apart from others is that it has some Yamaha digital effects (reverb, EQ, and some special guitar effects) built in. Those effects are provided via a Yamaha DSP chip that's part of the unit.

Since this is only a two channel unit you don't need to deal with a software mixer when monitoring. There's a control on the front panel that lets you adjust the mix you're hearing between the input (heard with low latency) and the playback from your DAW or other audio software.

The unit is powered via USB, either through the USB-C connection to your computer or via a separate USB connector just for power. That second connector means you can power the unit from a separate source of 5 volts DC, including a phone charger or even one of those "power bank" batteries with a USB power outlet.

The interface is built like a tank and is very compact. The downside of that is that the control knobs are small and very closely spaced, and its not hard to bump the input level controls while changing other controls, especially if you have big hands like I do.

My only other complaint is that there might not be quite enough volume from the headphone jack under certain conditions, such as when using a software plug-in such as Sonarworks Reference 4 to correct for your headphones' frequency response. That plug-in usually reduces the playback level by about 6 dB to provide extra headroom, and that might mean you have to turn the headphone volume all the way up with some headphones.

Other than those small quibbles, this is a great sounding two channel USB interface that's easy to use.
