Two Models of an All-time Great Vintage Tube Compressor

The Universal Audio UAD Fairchild Tube Limiter Collection hand delivers the world’s best analog emulations of the Fairchild 660 mono and the 670 stereo compressor/limiters. Using Ocean Way Studios’ “golden reference” Fairchild hardware units, UA’s dream team of DSP engineers captured the complete behaviors of both units’ entire circuit paths, even adding the stereo sidechain link custom hardware mod. Then, UA catapulted these revered compressors into the 21st century by adding plug-in-only features catered to modern workflows, such as Dry/Wet Mix control, Sidechain Filtering, Headroom control, and mixing presets from famous Fairchild users. The resulting plug-in collection doesn’t just sound like Fairchilds; they are Fairchilds, with all the 660 snarl and 670 sheen from the originals now available in your DAW or Apollo interface.

Note 1: Do you own Apollo hardware? By purchasing this plug-in, you will receive two licenses: one license allows you to run the plug-in via your computer’s CPU, and the other allows you to run it via your Apollo hardware. Please contact your Sweetwater Sales Engineer if you have any questions.

Note 2: This product requires that you have an iLok account for authorization, although it does not require a physical iLok key. Please contact your Sweetwater Sales Engineer if you have questions.

More accessible than ever before

Fairchilds aren’t just one of the most coveted compressor/limiters ever made; they’re among the most coveted pieces of gear ever made. The 660’s patented growl on guitar, bass, and piano, and the 670’s distinct vibe on vocals, drums, and mix buses have shaped the music industry for over half a century. However, seeing their hardware unit costs might cause you to view them as les enfants terribles instead. Sweetwater studio engineers are thrilled that they can now get both the 660 and the 670 for a much friendlier price.

Vintage compressors, modern workflows

By adding a slew of plug-in-only features catered to modern workflows, UA made these fair children even more well-behaved. The Dry/Wet Mix control lets you get the right amount of parallel compression. Headroom control raises/lowers gain reduction, consequently raising/lowering distortion for dialing in the perfect amount of crunch. Meanwhile, Sidechain Filtering will help you obtain an ideal amount of balance and stereo imaging, with Sidechain Link adding Time Constant options to the six options onboard. Finally, mix presets from famous Fairchild-using engineers provide immediate solutions and springboards for your projects.

Universal Audio UAD Fairchild Tube Limiter Collection Features:

  • Includes both the mono Fairchild 660 and stereo 670, with their distinctive features and sound qualities
  • Total analog color plus transformer and tube amplifier behavior thanks to UA’s meticulous capturing of the entire electronic paths from Ocean Way Studios’ “golden” Fairchilds
  • 670 Lateral-Vertical mode helps sculpt your balance control and stereo imaging
  • Stereo Sidechain Link custom hardware modification
  • 6 attack and release Time Constants, with Sidechain Link adding even more Time Constant options
  • Includes all-new plug-in-only features: Dry/Wet Mix control, Headroom control, and Sidechain filtering
  • Includes presets from Michael Brauer (John Mayer, Coldplay), Darrell Thorp (Radiohead, Beck), Ryan West (Rihanna, Eminem), and more

Reviews

Endless Possibilities
I first tried this about 2 months ago, and I haven't stopped playing with it yet. Mind you, I've been an audio engineer for over 30 years, and (of course) never had the privilege of using a real Fairchild, so my review is based on never having used the real gear. BUT....Let me emphasize this. After hearing the plugin, I'm completely blown away and can only imagine what the hardware can do. This box "sings"! The tones (I hate using the overused word "color") that you get from this plugin opens a whole new world of experimentation to work with.
I've found drum sounds I never knew I could create, and that says alot from someone who has been doing this since 1993. Vocals can be shaped and molded. Mix bux? WOW! Want to find your unique, signature sound? Start here.
Keep in mind. This box is very colorful. Not for someone looking for transparent compression, but MAN, what a paintbox!
The Binder!
Superb plugin! This is the glue that binds my mix!!!

Yes!
Fairchild 660 end of each track chain (vocal/guitar). Fairchild 670 right after API 2500 and before FabFilter Q3 on master bus. I let the 660 determine my track level. I use the API 2500 to set master track limits and the Fairchild 670 to add its sound to the mix, with Vertical/Lateral enabled and slight compression. The API 2500 is fast like the 1176LN and secures gain and limits, while the Fairchilds (660/670) are like the LA-2A adding slight color. The Fairchild 660 provides compression and level control after the aggregate chain of each track, which includes the Studder A800, 1176LN and LA-2A Gray, along with other stuff. If I hear compression thump, I identify its frequency with the FabFilter Q3 first and cut it to just below the thump. Each compressor contributes slightly to limiting and color, but the Fairchild 660 is my goto track closer. I can lay it on heavy or light and it all sound pristine.

My only gripe is that you have to have an I-Lok to be able to use this otherwise it is a magnificent plugin. It is both sonically and visually impressive. Easy to use all you have to do is listen. No matter what you put them on the 660 and the 670 make everything sound better.
