Spirocore Bass Strings for Jazz
I was looking to switch up my string set up on my 1970s west german plywood bass that I use for jazz. They sound great. As many people have said they start off super bright but do get warmer. Right now about a month in they sound great, theres a lot of clarity and definition. Im coming from obligatos and the sustain on these strings is so much better in comparison not to mention theyre a lot easier to play fast and consistently. Id recommend, they make a killer jazz string and bowing sounds great too!
Great strings, better service!
Was looking to upgrade my strings after getting back into playing following a 25 year hiatus. I spent a lot of time googling and the Thomastik spirocore Weich seemed to rise to the top of recommendations. In general, a really nice sound, with a great growl. I kept hearing about the 'break-in' period. I didn't think they sounded bad at first, but they definitely seemed to settle and sound more rich after a week or two. I think these are largely considered a jazz/pizz string, but I find the bow response to be quite good as well. Overall a really high quality string, that seems to live up to its strong reputation. I hear they also last a really long time (meaning 5-10 years). I just got them less than a month ago, so can't speak to that yet.
As an aside, the customer service was fantastic. Literally within minutes of my buying the strings online (before the purchase even registered w/ my credit card company), i received a text and voicemail from my Sales Engineer, Andy. He welcomed any questions/concerns, and we exchanged a few texts about what to expect with the strings. He is a bass player too, so he had some thoughtful insights that I found really helpful. This was my first purchase with Sweetwater, but it won't be my last, i'm sure. Fantastic experience.
Music background: amateur bass player. Mostly jazz, but a lot of arco stuff too (Rabbath, Vance, etc)
Spirocore Weichs are great!
The premier string preferred by top double bass players, especially for Jazz and pizzicato. These strings are dynamic, and are lower tension, but still have a full sound. You get nice deep growls and that nasal woody sound so often associated with jazz. On the arco side, they are a little more difficult to play but are fine once you get used to them. They retain their tone for a long time; I play a couple hours daily 7 days a week, and they last over a year before they begin to loose tone. Some people claim they have sets of Spirocores on their basses for years/decades, and are still happy with them. They are competitively priced and will wake up most any bass, plus they are very easy to play. A definite upgrade to your sound and playing, if you have not tried them, you are missing out on some of the best strings available today. Thomastik has made many improvements to the Spirocore series strings since they were introduced, and they just keep getting better.
In addition, their Jazz Swing Series guitar strings (flatwound) are fabulous as well.
Music background: Piano, guitar and bass. Lifelong musician.
Love these strings
Much Easier to play. Finally got some growl in my bass. I don't know why it took me so long to find these strings. We'll see how long they keep their character.
