A Modern Take on the Legendary Austrian Sound

Developed, handcrafted, and tested to fastidious quality standards in Telefunken's Connecticut facility, the Alchemy Series is the company’s next-generation large-diaphragm tube condenser microphone. Inspired by classic mics — but far from slavish re-creations — these mics are designed and voiced from the ground up with unique sonic profiles. The Telefunken TF51 large-diaphragm tube condenser mic is a fresh take on the classic "Austrian" sound associated with vintage Telefunken ELA M 251E and C12 microphones. The TF51 continues the 251 legacy, delivering smooth midrange and airy highs while capturing every nuance of the source in gorgeous detail.

Sumptuous results on vocals, acoustic instruments, and percussion

The original ELA M 251E, introduced in 1960, is reverentially considered to be one of the most beautiful-sounding mics ever made. With rare working-condition vintage 251s going for big money, the TF51 is a no-brainer if you're after that uniquely smooth, present, and open sound you've heard on countless hits. Simply put, the Telefunken TF51 delivers sumptuous results on vocals, acoustic instruments, and percussion.

Top-drawer components

The TF51's astonishingly lifelike fidelity is a product, not only of design, but of top-drawer components inspired by those found in the vintage classics. The 6072A vacuum tube (also deployed in Telefunken's ELA M 251E and C12) is matched to an edge-terminated capsule inspired by the historic CK12. The TF51 also employs a custom German-made Haufe transformer, again, similar to the C12 and 251E. This meticulous attention to detail gives the TF51 its wonderfully and creamy sonic profile.

Explore the sonic possibilities

The TF51's three polar patterns — cardioid, omnidirectional, and figure-8 — give you immense flexibility when it comes to exploring the sonic possibilities offered by different recording techniques. With two of these superb microphones, you can implement stereo techniques such as Spaced Pair (A/B), X-Y (including Blumlein), ORTF array, and mid-side (M-S). You could even mic an entire symphony orchestra with nothing but three judiciously placed TF51s set to omni.

The next-generation 251

Sweetwater tip: Every serious studio should have at least one pair of high-quality large-diaphragm tube condenser mics — and the Telefunken TF51 is inspired by a legendary one. You can use the TF51 on just about anything — with world-class results. It's simply stunning on vocals, acoustic guitars, double bass, electric guitar and bass cabs, drums and percussion, strings, brass, and woodwinds. And you haven't lived until you've heard a grand piano spring to life when miked with a pair of TF51s. Considering its unique sonic virtues, impressive performance, and outstanding value, it would be wise to have two of them in your mic locker for recording tracks in stereo!

Awesome microphone

I did a comparison with a Neumann u87 ai, and this was the preferred vocal microphone for the female singer through a Neve 1073DPX, Distressor and Chandler RS124. This brought out nice and smooth bottom end, helped keep the shrillness at bay in her vocal, and when I eq'd the top end it was very nice and airy. I then tried it on a male vocalists and the band was blown away. The tube helped tame some of the transients too. It's just a very nice, quality microphone. It's super sensitive, so make sure your room is treated well.

Great Microphone !

I was torn between which Telefunken Microphone to buy. They all sound so great ! It was a toss up between the TF51 and the TF39. I wanted a microphone that was clean, pristine, detailed, but also had a great top end. I decided on this microphone and was blown away by the build quality, packaging ,and premium feel. This is a tube microphone that has an extremely low self noise which was great. With this microphone is is known for clarity and top end when it comes to vocals although you will not be disappointed by its low end frequency. It takes eq and compression VERY well which is great for adding air or body post processing. This microphone sounds amazing on vocals and is great because you can shape your own tone on top of it without it sounding too forced or losing detail.

Special Thank to Drew Owens and the Sweetwater team for OUTSTANDING Customer Service and Patience. I talked my sales rep ears off while I was deciding which microphone to buy and Drew helped me through the process and I am very happy with my purchase.

Extremely versatile, detailed, quiet

Thanks to Mike Arango for helping me out over the years--he's great to work with! This Telefiunken T51 is remarkable in its ability to handle a lot of studio chores. Even though 251 style mics have a reputation as being well suited to female vocals, I would not hesitate to use it on male vocals, acoustic guitars, and electric guitar cabinets. I'm certain there are other uses for it as well, but so far those are the sources that I have recorded since purchasing this mic a month ago. It does a wonderful job on my voice which sounds like a cross between a foghorn and a sea lion by taming the "Woof" and providing a hint of air above 5KHz. On acoustic guitars, it's very robust and it adds a nice presence bump with tight--not bloated--bass when placed about 8-12" from the twelfth fret. Whether you are fingerpicking a nylon string guitar or furiously strumming a dreadnaught, this Telefunken will balance the frequencies while avoiding the big bad boom. On electric guitar, I've used it to make a Les Paul through a little Vox AC4 sound like it's a cranked AC30. I place it about 6" back, just off center of the Celestion G10 Vintage. The three patterns--cardioid, figure 8 and omni--will significantly alter the depth and frequency response of the source. I've used the T51 with several UAD Unison plugins in Luna and it's an ideal mic for this analog tape-style workflow since it brings a real 12AY7 into the mix. But I've gotten even better results running it through a hardware based REDD style mic preamp with an EF86 pentode. The T51 is built in the USA to high standards using quality components, some of which have been borrowed from Telefunken's top of the line ELAM 251. The transformer is made in Germany by Haufe, and the 12AY7 tube is Russian. My initial reservations regarding the Chinese built edge terminated capsule were quickly discarded when I heard what this mic can do. Even the USA made cables with Neutrik connectors are exceptional as are all of the other accessories. The fact that it's dead quiet is further testament to the build quality. It's gonna get a lot of use in my studio.

Best microphone ever

I've been a music producer for over a decade and hands down, this is one of the most versatile microphones ever. This is one fine piece of art tube condenser microphone. I use it mostly for vocals but I have used it for acoustic guitars, and as a room mic and men… All I can say is that you wont regret buying it. From its rich sound to the amazing construction, this mic is a 10/10. Trust me.
