Strings I: comprehensive large-ensemble power
With the Vienna Symphonic Library’s Synchron Prime Strings I, you’re treated to an expansive library of cutting-edge string sonics, spanning six expertly recorded instruments: 14 first violins, 10 second violins, eight violas, eight violoncellos, six double basses, and 46 Tutti string ensembles. Bold and agile staccato articulations are complemented by a spectrum of marcato, sforzato, long-note, legato, tremolo, pizzicato, and portamento options, while an array of configurable attack, release, starting, crossfading, and humanization controls ensure your explosive ensemble remains as evocative and detailed as possible.

Strings II: subtle, intimate, and detailed orchestration
Like Strings I, Strings II contains the same spread of instrumentation, though with reduced numbers, cultivating a lush soundscape of detailed, intimate strings, delightfully contrasting the cinematic sonics of Strings I. For this small-sized Strings II ensemble, first and second violins are available in six and five players, respectively, halving the violas and violoncellos to four, bringing double-bass players to three, and a total of 22 Tutti string-ensemble options. Articulations mirror those of Strings II, calibrated and refined to stick the landing on subtlety and nuance that Strings I brings to your setup.
Woodwinds: from classic composition to worldwide sound
Across 16 Western and Ethnic options, the Vienna Symphonic Library Woodwinds collection supplies an international spread of instrumentation that spares no effort in capturing the meticulous details of each entry. For classic instrumentation, flutes, oboes, Bb clarinets, and bassoons arrive in pairs, while individuated piccolo, English horn, bass clarinet, and contrabassoon instruments add a wealth of dynamism to your compositions. Globally, a quartet of versatility abounds: the tin whistle (common to traditional Irish and Celtic music); the ancient Indiana and Nepali bansuri (a side-blown flute, typically made of bamboo); a dizi (a transverse flute with roots in China as far back as 7,000 BCE); and the Japanese shakuhachi (a recorder-like, end-blown longitudinal flute, made from bamboo, first emerging as early as the 7th century CE). Western woodwinds are treated to a bevvy of global and instrument-specific articulations, such as bold and agile staccato or portato, as well as vibrato-optional sustained, performance-legato, sforzato, and sforzatissimo options. For the Ethnic woodwinds, each entry features a slew of articulations painstakingly and professionally captured to honor the rich depth of historic playing that defines these iconic instruments.

Brass: solo and ensemble expression, built for scoring
When bold-and-brash brass intersects with virtuosic performances and state-of-the-art recording, you’ll know you’ve arrived at the Vienna Symphonic Library Brass collection. Pairs of solo trumpets and horns are augmented by 4- and 6-player ensembles of each respective category, while a solo tenor trombone and bass trombone can be incorporated into a 4-player trombone ensemble, with the addition of a bass tuba that — like the ensembles — can be used with VSL’s expressive Tutti presets. Vibrato-optional longe-note and legato articulations are perfect for slow builds and explosive swells, with bold or agile staccato and portato options joining sforzato and sforzatissimo articulations to support a dynamic aural aperture of subtle-to-searing performances.
Percussion: globe-spanning pitched panache and unpitched power
Whether you’re scoring a film, soundtracking an experimental art piece, or looking to add international sonic depth to your modern production, the Vienna Symphonic Library’s Percussion collection is a powerhouse of possibilities. Hollywood-proven recording on Stage A of Vienna’s lauded Synchron Stage brings you an array of pitched and unpitched instruments, methodically captured with up to 1.8-second times of lush, natural reverb. Pitched percussion spans single-note articulations of the glockenspiel, xylophone, tubular bells, and celesta, with additional rolls and octaves available to the 20–30-in. timpani options. Unpitched options traverse three sizes of woodblocks, a 20-inch Piatti cymbal, a tam-tam, a triangle, a suspended cymbal, the Japanese taiko, snare and bass drums, and a tambourine, as well as 10-, 14-, and 16-inch concert toms. And with exceptional per-instrument articulations captured by world-renowned performers, this collection supercharges any rhythm section with unmatched quality and character.

Harp: polychromic performance from virtuoso Tina Žerdin
As the long-time harpist of the Vienna Synchron Orchestra, Tina Žerdin’s virtuosic playing powers the Vienna Symphonic Library Harp virtual instrument. Multiple top-class microphones adorned the vaunted Synchron Stage Vienna’s Stage A, to capture Žerdin’s prismatic performance. Every note of the marvelous Lyon & Healy Style 30 Concert Grand harp used in these multidimensional recordings is teeming with nuance, depth, and detail, with versatile single-note and harmonic articulations to refine and bolster every facet of your compositions. Moreover, adjustable parameters for Expression, Timbre, and the ultra-wide Dynamic Range complement variable controls for Mic Balance, virtual space, reverb saturation, and velocity ensure every note, passage, and flourish is voiced with exacting dimensional presence.
Included Synchron Player: Flow, Precision, and more
Every Synchron Prime Section includes VSL’s dedicated Synchron Player. Driven by a powerful new audio engine, the Synchron Player delivers flawless streaming performance and a new level of advanced accessibility. Just step through the articulations, select a variation, and audition how the pre-configured controllers affect the loaded preset. The Synchron Player also incorporates an internal mixer with 5-band equalization, individual delay settings for runtime compensation, algorithmic reverb, polarity switching, and panorama controls. Using Flow View, experimentation and on-the-fly fun are at the forefront of your compositional experience, prioritizing exploration and versatility in an intuitive interface. When you’re ready to refine, switch back to the Precision View, and full-detail parameter control lets you go deep with your sound, across presets, instruments, and ensembles.

First-call musicians, first-class samples
At Sweetwater, we hold the Vienna Symphonic Library in high regard because we’re picky about our orchestral samples. It all starts with the musicians. Since VSL’s inception, first-call musicians have been providing the sound and character of these instruments as soloists and ensemble leaders. This approach is largely responsible for the impressive sonic authority and authenticity we have come to expect from VSL virtual instruments.
