A Hybrid Bass Head Packing Subway Clarity and Boogie Warmth

Inspired by Randall Smith’s original Bass 400 tube design, the Subway TT-800 refines and blends the best of its historical predecessor with Mesa’s beloved Subway preamp and a Class D output section. The result? A genre-defying bass amp that excels at home, in the studio, and on the stage. This head’s dual-channel design supplies you with both a Subway channel for modern-minded clarity and a Boogie channel that unlocks a rich, classic low-end character. Each channel sports a dedicated EQ section for interactive tone shaping, along with four global switches that unlock High-/Low-gain voices, a Deep switch to sculpt your signal’s bottom end, and a Bright switch to sharpen up your bass’s definition. Plus, both channels feed into a robust 800-watt Class D power amp that comes equipped with a gritty onboard overdrive. You also get a seriously robust I/O section on the back panel with channel-specific effects loops, balanced DI outs, heavy-duty speakON speaker outs, and more. Classic and modern all at once, the Mesa/Boogie Subway TT-800 covers all your low-end needs with arena-ready authority.

The definitive evolution of Boogie bass dominance

Mesa/Boogie’s legendary Bass 400+ has seen front-line action as the backline of choice for superstar bassists like Paul McCartney, Stanley Clark, Bootsy Collins, and many more. Sweetwater's vintage gearheads note that these workhorse tube amps still command premium prices in the used marketplace — if you can find one. Since the 400’s glory days, Mesa/Boogie has produced many fine tube-driven MOSFET designs, but the ascendency of Mesa’s renowned Class D circuitry has today given us the superb Subway range.

Features and flexibility today’s top bassists demand

Delivering punchy, epic Bass 400 tube tone, along with 2-channel flexibility, brawny Class D power, and lightweight, streamlined portability, the Subway TT-800 gives you everything you want in a modern bass amp. The TT-800 rocks both a classic Boogie Channel preamp and a Subway Channel preamp feeding Mesa’s acclaimed 800-watt, 2-ohm-compatible Class D power section into a bass amplifier head packed with the features and flexibility today’s top bassists demand.

Mesa/Boogie Subway TT-800 Features:

  • Dual-channel design featuring a preamp section with Tri-Tube topology driven by 12AT7 tubes
  • Clean and clear Class D power section, delivering 800W at 4 or 2 ohms and 400W at 8 ohms

  • High-/Low-gain switch offers powerful dirt-shaping control
  • Global O/D Symmetry control offers a variety of distinct overdriven tones, from symmetrical to asymmetrical clipping and everything in between

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Reviews

Absolutely Amazing
I had an old M-pulse, this thing has been a work horse. The tones that you can get out of this light weight amp are amazing. I have spent many fun filled hours playing around and experimenting, great tones. Highly recommend. I will not change amps, Mesa all the way.
10 out of 10!
I've been playing And gigging for over 25 years And this is hands down the best amp I've ever owned! The boogie channel has replaced my Vulcan and text 21 VT preamp pedals permanently! The subway channel has a huge frequency sweeps allowing for pretty much any sound you could ever need and great mid controls allowing you to get the mids right to stand up in a full band mix with ease.

OMG all of the YES.
I'll add to the chorus of praise for this amp.
First, much love, Sweetwater, always a pleasure.

I am the happy owner of a 12" Mesa Walkabout Scout Combo, which I've had forever and it sounds great, and is perfect for practice and small gigs. NO small or class D amp I've ever tried has ever come close to the Walkabout Scout. But at 300 Watts, it just wasn't always enough. I found myself cranking it and losing the deep low end notes and not popping through heavy on chorus downbeats. I need thunder.

My other rig is all huge Ampeg, and I love the all tube tone, deep and wonderful as Ampeg tube stuff is.

I have tried many times to "downsize" and save my back and overall frustration with good sound and tone being associated with heavy gear. I tried the WD 800, the GK Fusion 800, and Aguilar class D stuff, and I always felt it sounded cheap and lame compared to my big SVT4 Pro head and my 6x10 mini fridge, or my Walkabout Scout.

After reading many of the reviews on this head here on the Sweetwater product page, I hesitantly purchased the TT 800 and paired it with a Mesa 2x12 thereby putting 800 watts into the 4 Ohm cab to ensure plenty of headroom and enough to get over the drums, guitars, etc.

After just one rehearsal with this rig - I'M SOLD! I didn't even really have time to tweak the settings the way I want and HOLY MOLY.

I'm just going to say - if you are a tube guy, the Boogie Channel on this head is honestly amazing and you should purchase this immediately if you are on the fence. Just 7Lbs of head in a little bag, with a pretty manageable cabinet - and this rig is the best sounding thing I've ever had aside from the big tube rig, which I will now commence selling - because why carry any of that ever again?

Every bass I tried through it sounded insane. It brought clarity and punch, and deep rich low end I crave with a P Bass, J Bass, and with a German Hofner Club Bass I got scarily good McCartney sounds with little effort.

Mesa, home run. You did it. Thank you from a longtime fan of your bass gear.

Now excuse me while I go play more bass.

There's all the other Class Ds on a path to mediocrity and then there's Randall "Doc" Smith firing up the DeLorean with TT-800...
Where we're going we don't need roads... The TT-800 is what should be returned when you search "Major League" anywhere on the internet. It has fantastic clarity and response with the ability to produce anything from natural overdriven grit to bright harmonically rich dynamic pop while in the subway channel. And then there's the Boogie channel... oh man the Boogie channel. I've played a decent amount of tube based preamp Class Ds but the TT is in a completely different league. I honestly don't think it should be listed in the same category as the other "Class D/Tube Pre" units. Switching channels into the Boogie channel instantly results in a very distinct warm round sound very reminiscent of Mesa's iconic 400+ (just as advertised). The HPF on both channels works incredibly well for taking out the boom without leaving you sounding empty or thin through the entire range. Low/High Gain, Deep and Bright switches are just the right amount of boost in all the right frequencies (in the Deep/Bright cases that is) to be functional within a lot of different environments and the semi-para mid is just enough to not leave you asking for more.

I was a little worried about only having the single parametric adjustment (mid) but the massive selectable range of 150-2k works extremely well while not demanding too much real estate. It is honestly more of an "upper bass" to almost "presence" range instead of the traditional "Mid" control.

And as always the Sweetwater Service is the cherry on top. Always an excellent experience, especially with my man Kyle out there making sure I don't miss a beat!
Great amp
I got this to pair up with the Subway 215 cabinet. It blooms in the Boogie channel, very tube like warmth and fat. The Subway channel is a little more modern sounding to my ears.
Controls a well thought out and with minimal knob tweaking to get a good sound out of it. It's a very well built amp.
Comes with a very well written manual too. Read it to discover all the features.
The gig bag is a nice touch. Also has a proper length power cable that's pretty robust.
Diggin' it.
Music background: Semi retired pro

It's hard to imagine a more quintessentially modern guitar amplifier than a Mesa/Boogie, and when Sweetwater guitarists want high-gain tone, Mesa is where they start. One thing we love about these amps is their sheer versatility, such as the massive range of tone you get from each channel, the freedom to use the tubes you love, onboard CabClone cabinet emulation, and MIDI control. And it's not just guitar amps - Mesa/Boogie's bass amps and pedals are equally cool. What's more, thanks to our incredibly close relationship with Mesa, you can even customize your own amp right here on Sweetwater's website! Get the sound and style you want from your next amp, with a Mesa/Boogie from Sweetwater.
