Authentic ’60s Sonics Paired with a Well-worn Nitro Finish

The Fender Limited Vintera II Road Worn ’60s Stratocaster augments Fender’s Vintera II formula with a lightly aged nitro lacquer finish, further upping its period-correct authenticity and granting you a broken-in vibe. In fact, this Strat’s copious checking lines and semi-gloss aura replicate the feel of a vintage Strat that’s been played in for decades. Even the finish on the back of the maple ’60s C-shaped neck has been subtly worn down, allowing you to traverse the period-accurate 7.25-inch-radius rosewood fingerboard and vintage-tall frets with optimal speed and precision. Under the hood, you get a trio of vintage-style mid-’60s single-coils that sing with era-accurate spank and chime. You also get vintage-style tuning machines and a vintage-spec synchronized tremolo — a combo that ensures superb stability with even the most expressive of vibrato flourishes. Available in a collection of era-inspired colors, the Fender Limited Vintera II Road Worn ’60s Stratocaster is purpose-made to feel like a well-worn old friend from the moment it leaves the case.

Fender Road Worn: a finish with finesse and refinement

Sweetwater’s fans of Fender relic’d finishes will surely relish the inspired look and perfectly worn-in feel of the Road Worn models. While a touch more subtle than previous iterations with relic’d finishes, Fender’s Limited Vintera II Road Worn guitars and basses feature a nitrocellulose lacquer in a semi-gloss finish, complete with the handmade markings and light checking of an instrument with a story to tell. The era-appropriate maple neck is also slightly worn back, gifting you the playing feel of a mid-century guitar that perfectly rests in your hand — a platform primed for nuanced voicing and soulful expression. Sporting a series of classic Fender colors, like Fiesta Red and Blonde, the Vintera II Road Worn series at once recalls the bold stylings of the ’50s and ’60s while showcasing a settled-in and mature aesthetic. Your Fender Limited Vintera II Road Worn will quickly become the guitar you reach for time and time again, and, just like the perfect pair of blue jeans or your trusted baseball mitt, it will only continue to age with grace for years to come.

Teeming with ’60s-era tones

Once the Strat aficionados here at Sweetwater plugged the Fender Vintera II Road Worn ’60s Stratocaster in, no one could put it down. This solidbody electric guitar’s vintage-style ’60s single-coil Strat pickups boast Alnico V magnets, plain enamel wire, and staggered pole pieces. You’ll appreciate the bite that these pickups add to the traditional spanky Stratocaster sound. You also have a tried-and-true complement of controls at your disposal: a Master Volume knob, independent neck and middle pickup Tone knobs, and modern 5-way switching.

Old-school hardware

You’ll relish the careful thought Fender put into the Vintera II Road Worn ’60s Stratocaster’s aged hardware. Its vintage-style tuning machines supply rock-solid tuning stability, and its 6-saddle, vintage-style synchronized tremolo with bent-steel saddles facilitates expressive bends, warbles, and dives. You also get an eye-catching 3-ply mint green pickguard to ensure a head-turning, period-accurate look.

Fender Limited Vintera II Road Worn ’60s Stratocaster Features:

  • A lightly aged iteration of Fender’s Vintera II ’60s Stratocaster
  • Alder body wearing a period-accurate nitro lacquer finish, gleaming with intricate checking and subtle wear
  • Maple neck carved into a comfortable ’60s C-shaped profile
  • 7.25-in.-radius rosewood fingerboard with modernized vintage-tall fret wire for slick bends
  • Mid-’60s Stratocaster single-coils sing with bell-like chime and a gritty, biting tone when pushed
  • Traditional Stratocaster controls include a Master Volume and dedicated Tone controls for the middle and neck pickups
  • RWRP middle pickup unlocks quacky in-between tones
  • Synchronized tremolo allows for both subtle wavers and expressive vibrato

Reviews

The best MIM Fender Strat I’ve ever played/owned!!

First and foremost, I just want to start out by saying I did not buy my Vintera II Road Worn Fender Strat through Sweetwater (although Sweetwater would've been my first choice!). When I was in the market for one of these, these were unfortunately out of stock, and knowing my rushed self, I had to get one someway, somehow, and fast! So Reverb it was! Haha.

To keep it short and sweet: this is the BEST "Made in Mexico" Fender Strat currently on the market — and possibly ever! The Vintera II line — in general — is an absolute gem of a series, and any one of those guitars within the line up are truly worthy.

Some specific specifications of this guitar are so uncommon (such as the all-around nitro finish, finish checking, and essentially "Closet Classic" look and condition), you'd think it MUST have gone through Fender's Custom Shop! Very, very few guitars come out looking, sounding, playing, and feeling as good as this guitar.

Play one — you won't be disappointed! And honestly, MIM Fender Strats are where it's at nowadays; I've always been a fan of Mexican-made Fender guitars. Don't get me wrong… a good ol' "Made in America" Fender Strat takes the cake in most cases (historically for me as well), but these… these'll give their American-made cousins a run for their money!

TLDR: This is now my number 1 Fender Stratocaster!

Added note: mine came with an original Fender black tolex hardshell case opposed to the more modern TSA hardshell case! I didn't get to choose which one I wanted; although honestly, I would've loved either or, but the black tolex case — in my opinion — is the perfect pairing case for this guitar.

This is not just the best MIM Stratocaster - it is probably one of the best PERIOD!
Seriously blown away by this instrument. It is packing major mojo. The guitar rings like some of the best strats that I've played. It also sounds absolutely perfect - the pickups are fantastic! I wouldn't touch these pickups - they have it fall - depth, sparkle, quack, jangle. Visually, I love the light aging that this guitar has - really looks amazing in person. I haven't seen this kind of goodness outside of Fender USA CS.

Interestingly, I've had the opportunity to go through 5 of these (exact same model) and the consistency is there in terms of how they play and sound. Each of them has been an outstanding instrument. However, I have noticed build quality issues in terms of paint application.

The ONLY thing that I don't like about this guitar is the neck - it is a 60s style neck and unfortunately gets quite thin towards the first fret. I prefer necks with some meat on the shoulders. I'm keeping mine but I just wish Fender would have gone with a neck with a different profile over the first 5 frets. Check it out though - amazing guitar!

I've had Suhrs, Andersons, PRS Silver Sky etc. - while the build quality falls short of those guitars - this instrument sings like an old soul and is something special.
Fender Vintera ii Road Worn 60’s Stratocaster
Got this strat a few months ago. It looks great in person. Whether or not you like the worn/relic finish it does look pretty cool. Not too much checking. You almost have to tilt it in the light to see the cracks. The hardware is aged but in a subtle way as well. I have the sonic blue and I would say it's closer to a Daphne blue, which I like better anyway.

The wear on the back of the neck is subtle and tastefully done. The neck on mine is nice and smooth and doesn't not feel sticky at all. The fretboard looks and feels pretty good. No high frets or fret sprouting on mine at all.

The pickups have a nice rounded tone to them. Not too bright on the bridge pickup. It rolls off nice with the tone and volume knobs.

The case is the more vintage rectangular tolex case and it's very nice.

The only drawback is the shielding. I get an annoying static when playing and my fingers rub against the pickguard. Most of my strats and teles do this also, so it's not particular to this guitar.

Overall, it's just a great classic sounding and feeling guitar.

If you're on the fence about the guitar, just do it. The pickups are my all time favorite, no harshness in the highs and the bottom end is fantastic for all things Strat. The neck is the perfect goldilocks carve, a perfect taper up the neck, not too fat, not too thin, just right. Mine came in at 7lb 8oz which is about perfect for a Strat in my eyes. The color is kind of between Sonic and Daphne and is better than both in my opinion. I don't know if nitro and poly sound different but nitro is just cooler and wears in a pleasing way. The finish checking is really cool and they didn't go overboard with hardware aging or dents and dings. I wasn't a big fan of the old road worn relic and view this one as more of a head start to getting a really cool vintage natural relic Fender. They also didn't go overboard and sand all of the finish off of the neck, I prefer the neck to any custom shop relic I've felt.

That said, the frets were not up to par for a guitar in this price range. There was some fret sprout, which can happen to any guitar with a slab board, and the frets were not polished much if at all. This was easily remedied with a fret file, sand paper, and a little polish. Also, the stain used on the fretboard and dots was poorly applied with some dots being dark brown and others being almost bright white. So, I just took a cloth with some lemon oil and most of the stain came off of the dot markers with a few requiring a little steel wool. I think these two issues might just be my specific guitar and while they are annoying, they are vastly outweighed by how fantastic everything else is on this model. One other note of interest, the body routing was done after painting so you might also need to shield the body cavity but I haven't had an issue other than not wanting to take the back plate off like I normally do because it makes this model look worse.

I was torn between the AVII 1965 Strat in Sonic Blue and this model. At first I thought the price was too high but then I realized the Vintera had the cooler finish, better color, superior slab rosewood, and better to my liking pickups to go along with saving $ and it made this an easy choice. The MIM vs MIA vs MIJ is still a thing for a lot of people which is fair but this one had the specs I was after and it delivered.

I took off half of a star because of the body cavity not being painted and the dots and frets should have had better fit and finish. If not for those issues, this would be the perfect Strat and I would literally have a guitar just as I would spec it from the custom shop for under $.
