The Return of Washburn's Seminal Double-cut Bass

After an over 40-year hiatus, the Washburn Scavenger bass has reemerged as the Scavenger '78, a steadfast double-cutaway design with an affinity for top-shelf performance. Featuring a sleek, fast-playing mahogany neck, mahogany body, and bolt-on design, the Scavenger '78 bass inspires unencumbered fret access across the entire 22-fret register with sonorous sustain in tow. A comfortable 34-inch scale rosewood fingerboard further adds a nimble touch to your playing, and Washburn’s redesigned P-style pickup covers an expansive array of sonic territory. Moreover, tuning adjustments and maintenance are a snap, courtesy of a performance-minded hardware set that includes a string-through bridge, a genuine bone nut, and high-ratio tuning machines. From the history vault to Sweetwater's Guitar Gallery, the Washburn Wing Series Scavenger '78 bass has flown home, and it's ready to become a mainstay in your arsenal of axes.

The rebirth of Washburn’s Wing Series

As part of Washburn’s Wing Series, the original Scavenger bass sat alongside a lineage of player-focused guitars known for top-notch performance and elevated features. Though only produced from the 1970s through the mid-1980s, the Wing Series carved out a place in music instrument history, with notable players such as John Fogerty, Bob Marley, and Nancy Wilson incorporating these instruments into their respective catalogs. While original models have achieved cult-classic status and are increasingly difficult to find, the revitalized Wing Series Scavenger bass reinstates Washburn's original intention: to craft performance-focused instruments accessible to all players.

Built for maximum expression

With its symmetrical double-cutaway design, the Washburn Scavenger bass features premium appointments, making it an instrument that Sweetwater bassists find difficult to put down. Its mahogany body, combined with a mahogany neck, enhances the overall tonal profile with added warmth and sustain. Additionally, its 16-inch-radius rosewood fingerboard lets you effortlessly run through your most infectious grooves. Rounding out the Scavenger bass is a curated set of performance-focused hardware. You get a string-through bridge, a bone nut, and high 18:1 gear ratio tuners for enjoyable playing for years to come.

Versatile, expressive P-style pickup

The Scavenger comes equipped with a split-coil P-style pickup, custom-designed by Washburn to deliver that classic thump and growl. This pickup, combined with the bolt-on neck, delivers the instantly recognizable snap that’s heard on many hit recordings from the ‘70s. What’s more, there’s enough power and bite to fill out the low end of your rock outfit as well. Bolstered by a simple control panel featuring a single Volume knob and a single Tone control, no-fuss grooves are always at your command.

Washburn Scavenger '78 Features:

  • A collector-favorite electric bass from the '70s and '80s, reissued for the modern player, complete with throwback headstock logo
  • Mahogany body supplies a sonorous tonal foundation
  • Mahogany C-shaped neck provides long-lasting sustain and effortless access to all 22 frets
  • 16-in.-radius rosewood fingerboard facilitates fast, flexible playability
  • Single P-style pickup delivers classic warmth and snap, excellent for many genres and styles
  • String-through bridge and 18:1 ratio tuners promote accurate intonation and solid tuning stability
  • Genuine bone nut imbues your tone with open string resonance

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!
