Stage Vintage: the Next Generation

The SV-1 was an instant classic at Sweetwater. Now, with the SV-2SP, Korg delivers the next generation of Stage Vintage — with a twist: a powerful built-in stereo speaker system. Packed with cutting-edge technology — we’re talking 128-voice polyphony, twice the sounds, and more than ten times the sample data of previous SV models — and hot new features, the SV-2SP is the gig-ready stage piano you’ve always wanted. Boasting Korg’s superb, top-of-the-line RH3 weighted hammer action keybed, the SV-2SP Stage Vintage Piano is addictive to play. There are 72 breathtaking sounds onboard, including an exhaustive collection of deeply sampled electric and acoustic pianos, organs, strings and orchestral instruments, synths, and more.

Powerful built-in stereo speaker system

The SV-2SP takes the amazing sound, smooth playability, and wicked visuals of the SV-2 to the next level of performance with a built-in speaker system from Italian speaker designer K-ARRAY. You still get all the great features of the SV-2, but now you can access them in the dorm or bedroom, backstage or in the hotel suite. From dance and choir rehearsals to worship services, the SV-2SP fills the room with powerful sound — no PA system required! Visually, the SV-2SP reaps the benefits of fine Italian design, exuding elegance onstage or in your living room.

Take control

From iconic EPs, clavs, ’trons, and string machines with vintage effects and amp models to the finest German, Italian, Austrian, and Japanese grand pianos; playing the SV-2SP is like having decades of music history right at your fingertips! The SV-1 set the standard for real-time hands-on control in a vintage-focused stage piano, and the SV-2SP takes it even further. No menus here! The sleek, retro-futuristic chassis is outfitted with a purposeful, ergonomic control set of per-function knobs and buttons, so you can nail your sounds quickly in the heat of a set. And look good doing it.

Sublimely soulful renditions of coveted keyboard classics

Korg brought their formidable audio sampling technology to bear in the SV-2SP to give you meticulously accurate — and sublimely soulful — renditions of coveted keyboard classics. Sampling fastidiously maintained instruments using the latest multi-mic methods, every sound has been captured with stunning precision. From the slap of the tine and the release of the hammer to the click of the contacts — every element is faithfully preserved in the RX Layer, so you can mix in as much or as little of these authentic artifacts as you want. The full dynamic range of each instrument has also been faithfully preserved to re-creating all of the timbral — as well as volume — changes generated from a delicate pianississimo glance to a forceful fortississimo strike — and everything in between. Korg’s stringent sampling regimen serves up instruments with hyper-detailed, 3-dimensional presence, allowing the sound to assume its rightful place in the performance space — and your mix.

A treasure trove of essential sounds

The SV-2SP packs a treasure trove of classic electro-mechanical, transistorized, tape-driven, analog, and digital keyboard instruments, all rendered in remarkable realism. These must-have instruments defined a half century of popular music and the SV-2SP puts them all under your fingers — in mint condition, with perfect tuning — no maintenance needed. It’s all here, and then some!

The electric piano collection now includes nearly every American tine and reed models and a Japanese electric grand, as well as a rare German electric piano. Choose from analog, digital, VPM, FM, and sampled — including Korg’s own legendary M1. There’s a ton of clavinovas. How about organs? You’ve got the tonewheel classics; VOX combo, Italian transistor, American tube-powered organs; and new church and cathedral models. Strings? Choose from a ’70s-era analog string machine, prog-era tape-based strings, or a warm, vibrant orchestral string section. What’s more, the SV-2SP has you covered for mallets, brass and choir, guitar and bass, and even solo and pad synths that are perfect for splits and layers, which are quick and intuitive to set up on the SV-2SP control panel.

Packed with world-class pianos

At its core, of course, the SV-2SP is a masterful stage piano. At the touch of a button, you can call up the best grand piano sounds from across the globe — including world-class instruments from the leading German, Italian, Austrian, and Japanese piano makers. For a more intimate musical setting, choose one of the authentic Japanese or German upright pianos. Also included are real honky-tonk and a tack piano. Last but not least, the SV-2SP contains two exquisite harpsichords, one French and one Italian. Played by themselves, layered with other sounds, or split across the keyboard, these outstanding instruments give you a formidable sonic arsenal while providing generous performance options.

Expressive performances

The Korg SV-2SP Stage Vintage Piano features Korg’s flagship RH3 graded hammer action keybed, which features a graduated weighting across the keyboard, with a heavier feel in the lower-register keys and a lighter feel the further up you play. The RH3 keybed is incredibly sensitive to the nuances of your playing, accurately delivering the full expression you put into each performance. Eight different velocity curves allow the keyboard response to match your particular playing technique and the style of each performance.

The SV-2SP even offers eight tuning systems, including equal temperament, grand piano stretch, electric piano stretch, electric grand, upright stretch, detuned, and two user-definable types (configurable via the free SV-2 Editor). Naturally, the SV-2SP can be transposed into any key, and the overall tuning (concert pitch), can be adjusted to match another instrument or a previously recorded track — a very handy feature!

Studio-grade FX and Valve Reactor circuit

The right effects add layers of sonic richness to a sound. The SV-2SP features six independent stages of studio-grade signal processing, juiced by the Korg Valve Reactor circuit, which delivers the added warmth or fat snarl of a real 12AX7A vacuum tube. As with the sounds themselves, all of the effect models are faithful to the originals, and are designed to match the performance, limitations, and behavior of the selected effect.

The effect stages include a 3-band EQ as well as Pre FX such as the Red Compressor, Treble Boost, U-Vibe, Vibrato, Tremolo, and VOX Wah. Amp models include Clean, Twin, Tweed, AC30, Boutique, and Organ, plus several Cabinet Simulators plus Noise Reduction. Modulation FX comprise Classic Chorus, Black Chorus, Orange Phaser, Small Phaser, MX Flanger, and Rotary. Reverb/Delay consists of Room, Plate, Hall, Spring, Tape Echo, and Stereo Delay. Lastly, Limiter gives you a classic Stereo Limiter and Stereo Mastering Limiter.

Your ideal stage piano

The SV-2SP’s studio-quality effects and Valve Reactor circuit add the crowning jewel of authority to any vintage keyboard patch. Featuring stunning must-have sounds, amazing effects, Korg’s flagship hammer action, and a sleek, roadworthy retro-modern chassis with a fast, one-to-one control panel, the Korg SV-2SP is your ideal stage piano. Get your hands on one, and you'll never let go.

Korg SV-2

The SV-2 has some of the best electric piano sounds on the market, hands down, and at a more competitve price than nord keyboards. Yes, nords will give you more variety of sounds especially for those ambient folks. However, if you're looking for classic and vintage EP sounds and the daily comfort of a songwriter's keyboard this is exactly the keyboard to buy. There is a reason the SV-1 has upheld such a great standard for so long, the SV-2 will do the same.

LOVE the keyboard

I picked it for the electric piano sounds that are supposedly the best around. They were not lying, the EP sounds in here are just phenomenal, from simple Rhodes and Wurly sounds, to fully decked out effects (omg the phaser and chorus and tremolo are just SO good), not to mention the ability to simulate a bunch of amps, there is nothing that you can't do on the electric piano front. Of course we can critique how 'authentic' they sound, but if you want the real sound, you should really get the real thing. I just love the way it looks, the way it sounds, and the way it plays. This keyboard is AWESOME, I absolutely love it!!

The only 'downside' I can comment on are the speakers. When I got this keyboard, I was a total beginner and I knew nothing about keyboards in general. I had seen a youtube video (the Anderton one with the Korg guy) where the guys were commenting on how good the onboard speakers are. Based on that I went for the one with the speakers, because I didn't want to invest another bunch of money. The SV2 is not super expensive to begin with but we're still taking about $2K.

Don't get me wrong. The speakers are awesome and they sound great, I just wish they had a little more volume. I was always around maximum on them and it was not quite enough for my room. Just as a fun experiment I plugged it into my bass amp and I was blown away by how much better it plays when you're properly amplified. I ended up getting a set of 5" powered studio monitors, and I am so much happier with the keyboard now. The difference is night and day, it's just a lot more immersive, and even the regular piano sounds are so much better. I will never gig so this is enough for me.

This keyboard is just so great, I am super happy that I got it. If you're on the fence about the speakers like I was, I would say go to a store and try it out in person to see what they can do, and try some other options while you're there. Just to re-iterate, there is nothing wrong with the speakers besides the volume. BUT, if I had to do it over, I would have gotten the one without speakers. It's like 3-400 less expensive, which goes a long way to pay for the studio monitors.

so expressive

I've owned a number of different synths and stage pianos over the years, including Roland, Nord, Yamaha. I've found the Korg sv-2sp to be the most expressive, responsive keyboard I've owned or played. I generally prefer acoustic piano, and I'm not really a nob twiddler, so I'm using stock patches most of the time and don't really bother to learn all the more complicated things my instruments do - so take my review under advisement. But, I can say with certainty this instrument brings me sheer joy. Love exploring the various pianos and EPs and the way they respond. I read or watched a review calling the two harpsichord patches "throw away", but actually I find them to be quite realistic and enjoyable as well (I listen to a ton of harpsichord music). The clavs are amazing! Action is adequate, and really nothing compares to sitting in front of an actual box, but playing the Korg has kept my acoustic chops up nicely. The onboard speakers are good, surprisingly loud and detailed, though as you may imagine, the patches sound different and require different EQ and reverb depending on how you are amplifying. Stereo separation of the stock piano patches is a little intense at times through headphones, though I'd suspect there is a way to tweak that in the software editor. Love that it comes with a music stand. Overall great value. Before purchasing, I was looking at the newer Nords, and just the separately sold music stand costs a lot, let alone a good amplification solution.

The Best Rhodes / EP Emulation I've Heard

We have several keyboard / pianos in our studio from Roland, Nord, Vox, Hammond, Yamaha and Korg but the SV2 does the best EP sounds I've heard - and that includes the Nord Grand 88. Trust me. I do all the mixing and post so I hear them all. I always breathe a sigh of relief when I hear the SV2 on the track. It sits perfectly. The effects are spot on. It's the true vintage vibe. If you're looking for that perfect 1970's yacht rock / Ray Manzarek / Michael McDonald piano sound, this is the one.

Vibration Issued Solved with SV2S

If anyone out there is experiencing a vibration with the new Korg SV2S (73 or 88 versions - I have the 88) contact your seller/local distributor. I'm based in Australia, CMI handled the claim, but ultimately K-Array needed to make a anti-vibration kit that stops the speaker cabinet from vibrating for certain harmonics. It happened to be about 14 keys mostly A's and F's to start that would have a very loud vibration with above volume 6. Especially noticeable on Piano sounds. I imagine since this being a new product line with speakers, the team at Korg and K-array had to work out the kinks to stop the vibration. My local authorised repair made the simple fix and now BEUATIFUL sound of this machine. Absolutely love my 88 key version. Great feel, awesome control, amazing retro sounds. So good to touch and feel what your changing with effects, eq, amplifier. Gave me a whole new appreciate for playing. Love this keyboard, and the team at Korg/K-Array for addressing the vibration issue.
