Classic British Diode-bridge Compression with Cutting-edge Features

The Successor stereo bus compressor continues Heritage Audio's tradition of manufacturing acclaimed pro audio equipment inspired by holy-grail vintage English gear. The Successor features true stereo operation on single controls with matched gain cells for extremely tight left/right tracking and near-zero offset between channels. Compression tracking works in "Oxford mode," where, as opposed to summing left and right channels, the loudest signal control compression. Carnhill I/O transformers and balanced and Class A output stages bring the coveted sound of classic British diode-bridge compression to your drum or mix buses.

Impressive specs yield superior sonic results

Rocking an all-discrete, Class A signal path, the Heritage Audio Successor is well spec'd with stepped controls for easy recall, flexible sidechain filter options, and ultra-fast attack and release times not typically found in vintage designs. The faster attack and release options permit more flexible settings, including FET-like behavior and volume maximizing without transient artifacts. Another modern feature we appreciate is the Blend control for instant parallel compression. The Successor is also equipped with Carnhill transformer-coupled balanced inputs and outputs, ready to add warmth, girth, and authority to any sound source, for some of the sweetest vintage-flavored compression we've heard in this price range at Sweetwater.

  • Frequency Response: 10Hz–30kHz (±1dB)
  • Compression threshold: From -20 to +20dBu, on stepped pot
  • Compression ratios: 1.5:1, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, 6:1, Limit, on stepped switch
  • Attack: Selectable from 50us (ultra-fast, great for slamming drums) to 20mS (slow, good for maintaining natural dynamic range in full mixes)
  • Attack Values: 50uS, .2mS, .5mS, 2mS, 5mS and 20mS, on stepped switch
  • Release: Selectable from 25mS (ultra-fast) to automatic times.
  • Release Values: 25, 50, 100mS, Auto1 and Auto 2
  • Sidechain filter: Complex filter comprising 3 second order highpass filters (at 100, 300, and 5000Hz) and 2 bell-type pre equalizers at 800 and 3000Hz. Sidechain has a smooth 50Hz roll-off which is added to the sidechain filter selector, preventing sub low frequencies from riding the compression
  • Gain Makeup: Up to 10dB in 2dB steps on stepped, 6-way switch
  • Blend Control: Switchable On/Off, from fully processed sound (Wet) to unprocessed (Dry) on stepped pot
  • External Sidechain: Sidechain send and return jacks, switchable On/Off

Heritage Audio Successor Stereo Bus Compressor Features:

  • True stereo operation on single controls with matched gain cells for extremely tight left/right tracking and near-zero offset between channels
  • Oxford mode compression tracking (loudest signal controls compression)
  • Carnhill transformer-coupled balanced inputs and outputs for rich character and vintage vibe
  • Vintage-style Class A output stages bring the coveted sound of classic British diode-bridge compression to your drum or mix buses
  • Diode-bridge based compression favors desirable 2nd-order harmonic distortion characteristics and true vintage tone while eliminating unpleasant odd-order harmonic content
  • Ultra-fast attack and release time options not found in vintage designs permit more flexible settings, including FET-like behavior and volume maximizing without transient artifacts
  • Versatile sidechain filtering options elaborate on the obligatory highpass filters, introducing mid-band peaking filters and high-frequency compression, allowing bus dynamics shaping heretofore not possible
  • Sidechain Send and Return jacks allow for external sidechain signals or further external processing of internal signal
  • Blend control offers onboard parallel compression without any external equipment; Blend On/Off button allows for instant comparison in-between wet and dry signals
  • Stepped controls for easy settings recall
  • High-quality analog Gain Reduction meter

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Such a great compressor and color box

I purchased this for use in my mix buss and/mastering chain as a parallel compressor, just to add a little weight to the sound. Not only am I getting the exact results I was hoping for, but also so many other uses and sound: Straight compression, parallel compression, Wet only (Dyn in but no Gain Reduction, blend off) uses Input transformer + 1073 makeup gain + output transformer, Wet only (Dyn switched out, blend off) Uses Input + output transformers, Dry only uses only output transformer. 3 very different sounds. I am supper happy!

Tasty!

I LOVE every setting of this thing. It's a very nuanced beauty!
The reaction is smooth, the settings available on the dials are perfect for the widest-range of applications, and the build-quality is nice and sturdy.
I think people can guess as to how this can be applied in regular recording-engineering, mixing-engineering, mastering-engineering in general, but i'd like to add, that playing around with its extreme settings, and then layering that over more subtle settings in a DAW makes for some powerful control, as well as some nice finds for newer sounds and processing-styles. I've seen videos on youtube where engineers can use this on normal recordings of bands and such, but i think it is also a powerful tool for musical and audio-engineering innovations. It's a delicious bit of analog power that truly inspires :)

Analog Color!

I was really surprised by the amount of color from this, just adding this into my chain gave my mixes the weight they needed. The Successor is the first thing my sum out hits because of its versatility. The fast attack is a great tool in conjunction with the blend! I am very satisfied with this unit and it is a great value for the money. If you are looking for a top notch Bus compressor and don't want to spend $$$ then this is your best solution!

Game Changer!

First off, Thank you to Rob Amaral "The Magic Man!" He is the best, most knowledgable Sales Engineer you'll find. This was the final piece of the signal chain. I can't believe how close this sounds to the SSL G Comp. Incredible build. Heavy and sounds incredible. The first mix sounded huge and clear! Definitely a great investment!

Thick, fast, slow....it's whatever you need it to be!

It's good on vocals, drums, bass, synths and whatever you need it to be. Once you get past the minute learning curve of it's characteristics (attack, release settings), you'll really enjoy this piece. I can be a subtle as your standard VCA or as crunchy as you need it to be. Grab one and test across different sources for YOURSELF. Forget what I and others have to say. Try it and you will see!
