The Hummingbird Custom Koa Soars Like No Other!

The Gibson Hummingbird Custom acoustic guitar will have you torn between displaying this gorgeous instrument as art and keeping it in your hands for nonstop acoustic enjoyment. This jaw-dropping acoustic guitar's design detail and aesthetic presentation are absolutely next level. The Hummingbird Custom features a solid AAA sitka spruce top paired with solid koa back and sides for a tonal blending that's out of this world. You've never quite heard such a rich balance and blend of punchy treble and midrange held together by a meaty, expressive low end. And with a classic dreadnought body, the Hummingbird Custom delivers big volume and impressive projection. In addition, a gorgeous mahogany neck and an ebony fingerboard with rolled edges are comfortable and responsive — ideal for flatpicking and fingerpicking.

Dressed-up dreadnought style

As Gibson's first square-shoulder body shape, the Hummingbird brought a subtle new body style and a bold new look to the company's dreadnought family in 1960. To celebrate this milestone acoustic, Gibson has adorned the Hummingbird Custom with handcrafted hummingbird inlays made from genuine abalone and mother-of-pearl all over the body and neck. A stunning double-ring rosette with an abalone-filled middle sits next to the classic tortoiseshell pickguard that's engraved with hummingbirds and blossoms.

Hand-scalloped top bracing delivers exceptional tone

Another feature of the Hummingbird Custom is Gibson's weight-relieved hand-scalloped top bracing. This bracing provides strength while allowing the top to vibrate with a piston-like action, which is another one of Gibson's secrets to exceptional tone. For over 100 years, Gibson artisans have known the truth that the top of an instrument is not just a vibrating wall. Gibson carefully scallops and arches each top brace to focus the sound to the center of the guitar top. This technique is one of the reasons why artists, sound engineers, and listeners — including many here at Sweetwater — have heralded the sound of a Gibson as one of the world's finest instruments.

Nitrocellulose lacquer finish for sound that improves with age

Gibson Montana uses a nitrocellulose lacquer finish on all their acoustics for a reason. The lacquer finish is thinner than polyurethane, which allows the wood to vibrate more freely for better tone and projection. Thanks to the lacquer finish, as your Hummingbird Custom ages, its sound actually improves — just like the great violins of the 18th century. The Hummingbird Custom is at once a collector's dream, a working musician's axe, and a treasured family heirloom.

Classic Gibson craftsmanship: impeccable sound, looks, and playability

Gibson's reputation as a fine guitar builder dates back to the late 1800s. Handcrafted since day one by some of the most skilled luthiers, Gibson acoustic guitars have inspired countless players around the world. When you pick up a Gibson acoustic, you know you're getting the finest tonewoods, quality hardware, and incredible attention to detail. These instruments are built to sound great and stand the test of time. After moving from Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Nashville, Tennessee (where Gibson electric guitars continue to be made), Gibson finally settled their acoustic operation in Bozeman, Montana, where they continue to produce some of the finest guitars on the planet.

Gibson Hummingbird Custom Acoustic Guitar Features:

  • Classic acoustic guitar built for today's player
  • Sitka spruce top for clear tone and powerful projection
  • Solid koa back and sides for warm, round sound
  • Square-shoulder body offers a versatile tone
  • Detailed design and jaw-dropping aesthetic touches

AS GOOD AS IT GETS

I have the 12 string version (disclosure: not purchased from Sweetwater).
I have owned many high end acoustics; nothing compares. The pricy price is of course partly for the "bling", which is not usually important to me but this is some of the most elegant, tasteful "bling" I've seen. The playability is the best I've ever experienced in a 12 string. There is a precision to the set up and action which has got to be as close to ideal as possible - surprisingly easy to play and with intonation about as close to perfect as you can get with an even-tempered instrument.

The sound IMO, is as described on the page. Everyone uses terms like "balanced". "chiming", "focused", but in this case, boy can I hear these qualities. Every string is exactly the right relative volume and tone to my ear, with outstanding definition/clarity. It stays in tune very well, can be played soft or aggressive and puts out a lot of volume. Does a "standard" version Hummingbird sound as good? Afraid I couldn't tell you but I can say this is the best I've heard. Neither can I say if the koa wood back and sides is the main magic ingredient but whatever they did - it worked. Finally, the pick up system sounds very, very good. Plugged straight into a Fishman Loudbox and loved the natural acoustic sound. I think Taylors' on board electronics sound great but this is at least as good.

Also, these guitars are somewhat rare. Yeah, you can buy a new one (at the moment) but I currently can find only two used ones for sale on the internet and I can't find a single used 12 string version. These guitars are something special and easy to sell if you ever needed to.

I am 55 years old, been playing all my life and IMHO, this is as good as it gets. An Heirloom quality instrument. I will never sell mine.
