Earthworks’ Amazing Handheld Condenser Mic

Earthworks precision-engineered their SR314 handheld condenser microphone to offer a fresh approach to miking live vocals. The SR314’s tight cardioid polar pattern provides consistent frequency response to 90º off-axis, with extreme attenuation of off-axis sound sources beyond 90º and maximum rejection at 180º. It captures natural, open, rich-sounding vocals with minimal proximity effect and delivers articulate low end close up without thinning out with distance. This allows singers to “work the mic” without dramatic changes in sound. The SR314’s 145dB SPL handling and an extended 20Hz–30kHz frequency response further enhance the versatility of this incredible mic, making it as useful for high-fidelity capture of instruments as it is for vocals.

“The Instrument for Vocalists”

Billed as “the instrument for vocalists,” Earthworks designed the SR314 for today’s live performance environment. The beautiful retro-futuristic design incorporates stainless steel artfully sculpted through precision machining to give you a microphone that is inspiring to the eye, balanced in the hand, and robustly engineered to withstand the rigors of the road. Protected within its steel exoskeleton is a studio-grade small-diaphragm cardioid condenser capsule coupled with a Class A amplifier circuit that leverages Earthworks patented and proprietary technologies to deliver one of the fastest mics on the planet.

Studio-grade sound quality

The SR314’s extended flat frequency response and excellent time coherence with fast, clean impulse response sets the Earthworks SR314 apart from other handheld vocal mics in its class. Layer by layer, Earthworks systematically eliminated distortion and noise normally added by acoustic and electronic circuit components to give you a microphone that unveils the true voice of the artist. Earthworks may position the SR314 as a live vocal mic, but its outstanding sound and performance have certainly caught the attention of studio engineers at Sweetwater.

Revolutionizing the live music experience

The SR314 revolutionizes the live music experience for performers, engineers, and audiences. Faster soundchecks and better monitor mixes let artists focus on what matters most: the performance. Front-of-house engineers are freed from the vicious cycle of corrective EQ, overt compression, de-essing, and perpetual feedback vigilance. Audiences hear nuanced vocals that sit perfectly in the mix, bridging the gap that so often separates the experience of listening to live music versus studio recordings.

Microphone with extremely high sound reproduction

This microphone is definitely one of the top choices among contemporary handheld condenser microphones. Even if you don't use it, you will definitely not regret it if you just collect it! For those who are still hesitating, don't think twice, just buy it!

The verdict is in!

Played my first solo gig with this mic last night, and got many compliments on my voice. People were actually making a point of it, including stopping my wife on her way into the venue to say how great it sounded. That's enough for me!

No issues with feedback, dials in easily (didn't even touch the gain), just send it phantom and you're good to go. You'll be surprised at the difference. I've used Beta 58's for years, and granted, it's an additional $... but this is a stunning upgrade. Especially in a vocal/guitar setup, having the voice sound as great as it can is worth every penny IMHO.

This mic is a great choice

I've been singing for 35 years and always used Shure mics. The Beta 58 has been my go to for many years and it is a fine mic but, my singing partner has been using a hand held condenser (Neumann KMS 105) and I thought I should take the plunge as her sound quality is so good on stage. I looked into that mic but discovered the Earthworks option and did some research.

I used it on a gig last night for the first time and holy cow does it sound great! The air, smoothness, and detail made for an inspired evening and my audience picked up on it too. Earthworks have done a great job making sure it's a "live friendly" condenser. I made about three times the tips! Not sure if the mic was the reason but I can't rule it out!

Highly recommending this mic for anyone who is serious about their vocal sound and performance in a live environment. I've watched many reviews with in studio use and it seems to shine on a variety of sources so it's not a one trick pony. I'm looking forward to some experimenting in that area.

You can't go wrong with this mic - it's just plain excellent.

Wow...What Quality and delivers as advertised

I use it on the stage and in the studio. I'm a slightly higher baritone and love the way this mic captures my voice inflections. Specs show a nearly perfect flat response curve and real world use reflects that. Sending a big shout out to Ryan Wiltermood who skillfully guided me to this mic and other quality products over the years.

THIS MIC IS MY NEW FAVORITE GO TO FOR LIVE VOCALS AND IN THE STUDIO!!!

IM OBSESSED WITH THIS MICROPHONE!!! The first time I used this microphone was at Lollapalooza music festival for the artist JAWNY for 10,000 people on a giant PA system. The mic performed beautifully capturing everything from the smaller intimate moments to the big rocking high energy moments of the set. It has quickly become my favorite studio vocal mic as well! It blew my U87 and 251 clones out of the water. The SR314 has perfect clarity and smoothness making it easy for it to cut in a mix and sit on top without overpowering any other elements in the mix. I can't wait to take out a handful of them for my upcoming tour with Eric Krasno and the Assembly. It's going to make every night mixing more fun and creative for me. I can rest easy knowing Earthworks has got my back.
