Experience Reliable Wireless Performance

The Shure SLXD14/153T is a complete wireless earset microphone system. It includes the SLXD4 Wireless Receiver, MX153 Omnidirectional Condenser Earset, and a SLXD1 Wireless Transmitter. It's especially useful for lecturers, presenters, and applications where using a traditional microphone is impractical. Shure's cutting edge digital wireless technology delivers 24-bit audio resolution with an almost imperceptible 3.2ms of latency. Add in the working range of 100 meters (328 feet), and you've got a recipe for serious wireless potential. If you're ready to take the plunge and give your system a much-needed upgrade, you can't go wrong with a Shure SLX-D wireless setup.

The sound you know without the dropouts

Shure's been at the forefront of the wireless movement for more than three decades. Over the years, Shure's learned a thing or two about providing reliable signal and is pleased to report that SLX-D experiences fewer dropouts than ever before. Here at Sweetwater, we chalk the impressive performance up to the sheer transmission strength and the natural resistance to RF interference. One thing's for sure; you can trust SLX-D to deliver a clear and rock-solid signal night after night.

Get heard loud and clear

One of the chief advantages of using the SLX-D series is the immense dynamic range. Since Shure SLX-D systems transmit digitally, you can use its entire dynamic range without worrying about the effects of companding and compression. And thanks to its 120dB dynamic range, your system will be able to handle whisper-quiet performers and rock bands alike. No matter what performers are onstage, SLX-D makes sure that they're heard loud and clear.

Ready to go the distance

Shure's SLX-D systems are versatile and expandable to fit the needs of any venue. Single-channel and dual-channel receivers and vocal, guitar, headset, and lavalier options let you choose the setup that's right for you. Once you get everything you need, getting set up is a breeze. One-touch synchronization and IR scan make pairing a transmitter and receiver a walk in the park. With a pair of AA batteries, Shure's SLX-D transmitters provide up to eight hours of non-stop operation that's perfectly suited for conferences, extended performances, and Sunday mornings.

The Upgrade We Were Looking For

Purchased this for use in a smallish church that seats @150. The Shure wireless headset mic we were using (that I as sound guy inherited) was fine 95% of the time but susceptible to occasional WiFi interference. It was a single band 2.4GHz system that should never have been purchased in the first place, imo. It was definitely proving to be the "weakest link" in our overall system and needed to go.

Here are my takeaways-

I'm pretty much sold on digital UHF wireless and I doubt there's any going back. I briefly considered the cheaper BLX system but my sales engineer assured me that it would be well worth our while to go digital. So far, early on, I am certainly not arguing. The connection between transmitter and receiver has been rock solid and the audio loud and clear. I will be very surprised if we run into any interference or drop out issues. Whatever milliseconds of latency that exists (the reality of A/D/A conversion) is certainly not something I can perceive or need to worry about in our application.

Brief but adequate instructions to get you started. Set up is a quick and seriously simple process if you follow the prescribed steps. Note that there are a few settings that you can only change on the body-pack transmitter itself and those are NOT covered in the paper manual that comes in the box. There IS an online manual that does cover these at pubs.shure.com. Without going online I did easily engage the hpf (good idea) but the online manual was a big help for the other couple things you set at the transmitter. Overall getting things working should be a painless no-brainer for anyone with even just a little pro audio experience. No need to be intimidated by all this digital tech. Get this wireless system and people will think that you're an audio guru!

I was little leery of the ear-worn mic itself as it is omni-directional and not cardiod (or better yet super-cardiod) like I always prefer on a live stage. But so far my feedback concerns have proved to be unwarranted- feedback has been a non-issue. This mic is used for speech only (so it's kept out of the wedges) and while our mains are almost directly above the platform we get plenty of volume without a hint of feedback. Even during our initial set up and trial run there was nothing. Note that it really doesn't take much channel gain to get a proper level if you set the gain stage at the SLXD receiver per the instructions. The "optimal zone" is your friend! They really did create this to be user friendly for novices and non-professionals.

One thing that happily surprised me upon first use soundcheck was the absolute lack of handling noise there is when you adjust or fiddle with the ear-worn mic! I suspect that this has less to do with the actual mic itself and more to do with the fact that the transmission is digitized and that those noises simply aren't perceived as audio input. Maybe ask you sales engineer about that as I'm just a nuts-and-bolts sound guy and not a technical engineer. All I know is that it was mind-blowing to handle, adjust and readjust a tiny, highly sensitive mic like this and have no annoying noises come thru the speakers. Game changer!

FYI, for power we use an Ansmann charger with AA 2850mah Slimline Rechargeable NiMH Batteries that we purchased from Sweetwater a few months back. It does a great job for us.

Minor Downsides? The fact that the included manual is incomplete and you must to go online to learn everything is irritating to say the least. I'll go ahead and print the transmitter settings page off the Shure website and stick it the paper manual but given what we just paid for this thing I think it's a bit ridiculous that I should have to. It is also disappointing that such an expensive piece of gear is made in a communist county and not here or at least in a democratic state... but what are going to do? Speaking of the price tag, this does feel like quite a price to pay for a single wireless microphone. And while it so far has done it's job pretty much perfectly, wow, that's a lot of coin where I come from. Assuming I get over the "new normal" sticker shock I'm confident that, in the long run, this will have been a good investment. Time will tell. Bottom line- I recommend it!
