Lightweight, 73-key Hammer-action Controller

Over the years, Studiologic has earned a sterling reputation for their high-quality Fatar keyboard actions. Now the company extends that legacy with the SL73 Studio, a lightweight 73-note MIDI controller keyboard featuring Fatar's latest fully-weighted keybed technology. You'll delight to the touch of the TP/100 Premium Hammer Action, which delivers the authentic feel of an acoustic grand piano. You will also appreciate the quick setup and navigation afforded by the SL73 Studio's intuitive user interface, as well as enhanced performance, DAW, and plug-in control via three X/Y stick controllers. If you're a serious pianist who needs a truly portable 73-key weighted controller for stage and studio, the Studiologic SL73 Studio should be on your shortlist.

The ideal gigging controller

It may sport a fully-weighted 73-note keyboard, but the Studiologic SL73 Studio is delightfully portable. Thanks to its lightweight Fatar TP/100 action, it weighs in under 31 pounds - which is very much appreciated by gigging Sweetwater keyboardists. The SL73 Studio is also thoroughly professional caliber and built like a tank with a rugged all-metal casing and impact-resistant synthetic endcaps that protect the keybed and provide a sure grip when transporting.

TFT color display for total access

The Studiologic SL73 Studio features a bright, easy-to-view TFT color display that, in conjunction with a high-quality 6-way controller knob, lets you quickly and easily navigate through all SL73 Studio functions - a very intuitive setup. Three pushbuttons to the right of the control knob bring you back to the top level from any location in the system with just a single press.

X/Y stick controllers for real-time control

Studiologic spec'd the SL73 Studio with three X/Y stick controllers for expressive performance and direct manipulation of sound parameters. Stick 1 (which you'll typically use for pitch and modulation control) is spring-loaded in both X/Y axes. Stick 2 is spring-loaded in the X axis only. Stick 3 is free in both the X and Y axes, which is perfect for crossfades, pans, and parameter control.

Studiologic SL73 Studio Features:

  • 73-note Fatar TP/100 Premium Hammer Action keybed
  • Studiologic's triple-switch detection system

Beautiful and Sturdy MIDI controller

This is a magnificent midi keyboard. Very sturdy and beautiful and a pleasure to play with. Keys feels amazing, a little bit heavier than a regular piano, but almost unnoticeable. Love the matte texture of the metal surfaces. Screen is magnificent, colorful and bright. Menu interface it's easy to navigate and understand. Software controller it's not intuitive, but you can live with it. Playing this keyboard it's just inspiring, it's inviting. Love the design lines and the quality of materials. The keyboard has no more controllers other than the 3 sticks on the left, which has different mobility capabilities. Love the XY stick for expression control (resonance and tone). Awesome. The other ones are good as well but I have not figure out yet how to fully use the extra movements they have… If you want to control other stuff aka using pads for percussion or chords, faders, knobs, etc, you have to pair this keyboard with other secondary controllers like the Kong nanokontrol2 series, for example, because this keyboard only have the 3 sticks I mentioned before. I think this a trade-off for such a fantastic and fully weighted keyboard controller at this price point… It can't have it all, but you can make it work even more amazingly with other adds-on. Still I am trying to figure out how to fully take advantage of the 4 zones it has built-in. You can configure each zone to a different instrument using a multitimbral software instrument. But still I am a little confused in how to fully use it with MainStage, for example… Part of my journey I would say (So far I am only using one zone only with Mainstage.) Occasionally I use 4 zones if I am using UVI workstation, for example, with integrates FANTASTICALLY with this keyboard (and it comes free with your keyboard purchase). Buying to Sweetwater its always a pleasure and a go to. Craig's attention is super appreciated! Strangely the keyboard does not come with an USB cable, but it does with a switch pedal that you can use as a sustain one if you would like (for which you have to disable the programs change control under the global settings of the keyboard every time you turn it on ;). Go Studiologic and Go Sweetwater.

Wonderful, but not for me.

Great construction, ease of use, light weight, affordable! BUT, I can not stand the way it feels when playing a piano patch. The key bed feels way more like a Fender Rhodes than a piano. Had I been able to play it first, I would not have bought it. Of course, the wonderful Sweetwater would happily let me return it, but the product I would have been happy with was out of my price range. The Roland that I like is twice the money. So, I'll keep using the SL73. I still give it 5 stars because it's a quality product. Just not for me.

Perfect for me!

Didn't need 88 keys. 61 notes not enough for piano playing as no room for right hand fills on upper octaves.
Wanted weighted action.
Wanted true "full sized" keys. Not ones 1/2 inch shorter. Having been playing for MANY years, this makes a huge difference.
I use this not as a midi controller per se, but solely to play all my virtual instruments while recording into a DAW. And it's flawless for me in that respect.
For the money one shouldn't expect this to have the keyboard action of a Steinway Grand, and it doesn't....BUT, it is a very good keybed and it does the job exceptionally for my needs. Plus the flat top allows me to set other tools on top at my finger tips!

The Bomb

Solid Bang For The Buck

First of all, I'm not a keyboardist, I'm a guitarist, so temper this review against these facts. However, I know quality and whether or not an instrument is responsive and inspires. This controller is built well and the controlling software is ample and provides enough functionality to customize its responsiveness. You can read about all the specs and be confident that what you read is what you get. I'm on a Mac platform and it just works.

The keybed action is stiff, but that's why I like it. I find the synth-style- or semi-weighted-action to be too fast for me. I like the resistance of this weighted keybed in that I can better keep the notes in tempo and control the delivery because of that resistance. It's analogous to drawing with a pencil rather than a ballpoint pen; the pencil provides resistance that you can use to better control your strokes, leaning into it rather than letting it slip past your intended destination. The action is close to that of our Yamaha upright.

I can afford most any controller, but I'm no fool. Bang for buck, this thing shines and I'm very happy with the purchase. And props to Sweetwater--these guys are customer service monsters--they dwarf the others.

Peace.
