What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!

Reviews

Phenominal Action great feel
Its been quite some time since I had a semi weighted controller its its been an absolute joy. The built in audio interface is a game changer, sounds fantastic and I expect this will be standard feature on midi controllers in this price range in the not to distant future, now I just can grab this and my laptop or Ipad and I am ready to gig. Construction on this is superb and feels substantial to the touch. Weight wise its not that bad and very portable. My only gripe is the limited control surface, coming from a Arturia keylab with a lot map able controls its a bit sparse. To counter this I paired with with a org nano II controller, which conveniently fits perfectly on the flat right top of the keyboard, I highly recommend adding it if you need significant VST controls both work extremely well with MainStage and the nano is awesome with Logic. Hope this review helps. I was going wait to see some reviews on this on Youtube prior to buying but took a leap of faith due to Studio Logic's excellent track record and boy I was not disappointed.

Really decent piano action to use below my Nord
I use a Nord Stage 2 compact (SW2) as my primary board. In the past I have used a Nord Stage EX 76 with the good hammer action at around 50 lbs. with the rolling case. I've also used a P series full size Yamaha 88 key piano with the GHS action. I did my research and found this controller. The action, weight, metal housing and size for me does not disappoint. I simply midi out of this board and into the Nord. There's nothing like the hammer action with a good Nord piano. One of these days I'll try it with some VSTs I have in my PC.
I would say the only disapointment and not a deal breaker by any means -they use a USB-C/wall wart for power. I know manufacturers do it to keep costs down but an IEC would have been a nice touch.
Music background: Piano lessons as a child and many moons of gigging.
SL73 controller provides great piano action without the weight of 88 keys and sound generators
I'm very happy with the SL73 MK2. It's a controller with good piano action yet moderate weight that provides a USB audio interface as a bonus. For paid gigging I play a Yamaha YC88, but it's too heavy to drag to rehearsals and parties. The SL73 weighs about 25 lbs. I use it either for MIDI over DIN into my YC61 (rehearsals) or for MIDI-in/audio-out over USB-C with my iPad (parties) and have had no problems with these setups and the latest firmware (currently 1.0.9). I do prefer heavier action, and this one feels very good even though it is not graded. The triple-sensor keys enable me to play fast repeated notes. The SL73 is solidly built.

The SL73 draws about 5W from its USB-C port, so you'll need the Apple AV Multiport Adapter or equivalent to avoid quickly discharging your iPad. My Korg apps and the free Studiologic Numa Player work great on the iPad getting MIDI from the SL73 and sending digital audio to the SL73 for conversion and output on 1/4" jacks. MIDI over USB also works well on my Windows laptop using Ableton and a Focusrite output interface. I agree with others that Numa Player on Windows has unacceptable latency, but I see that as a problem with free software, not with the SL73.

I really appreciate Jeremy pointing me to the SL73; my hands are much happier than they would have been with a semi-weighted controller.

Excellent hand assembled Italian Quality.
I Bought the Mk 2 SL73 for my home studio. I love the free download of the Numa Player and wonder why anyone would pay the extra grand to have these sounds onboard. The Numa Player downloads for Windows and iOS devices. Download the Numa Player on a tablet and all of the functions are at your finger tips. Plus updating is a breeze. The SL73/88 has a high quality D/A converter/audio interface built in. USB Midi out to the Numa Player or DAW, and USB digital audio back out to the keyboard audio output. No need to use the headphone jack of your mobile device or computer.

The keyboard itself is of excellent quality. Using the Fatar TP110 keybed, this instrument is solid and responsive. The keys are mounted firmly and stands up to frequent glissanding.

The weighting is comparable to that of a new, quality built, acoustic piano. If you're use to playing 20,30, or 50 year old pianos, you may find the action a bit heavy. Great for building up strength, but if you're used to semi-weighted keyboards the firmness will slow you down.

And speaking of weight, at 26 pounds it isn't considered heavy but I do find it unwieldy. Unless some special occasion pops up, I take the lighter M-Audio semi-weighted controller most everywhere. It comes down to if you must have a weighted keyboard, or not.

Real owner

I bought the sl73mk2 in the hope of gigging with just my laptop VSTs and this keyboard straight to front of house. I was disappointed. The on-board interface is glitchy on a good day and useless most other days. I have used three different laptops that all work flawlessly with other interfaces (radial key largo, motu, focusrite etc) but all three struggle with the sl73mk2. Oh yeah, they should tell you that its not designed for ASIO and only partially works with ASIO-for-all drivers. However if you are ok with just using their NUMA player and the sounds provided with their drivers, it works pretty good. So i am still hauling all my other gear and interface like before. Hopefully a update to firmware and software will fix those issues in the future.
