A Great-sounding Yamaha Birch Kit

This Yamaha Stage Custom Birch 5-piece shell pack is an outstanding value, whether you're a beginner or a seasoned player. Complete with a pair of rack toms, a floor tom, snare drum, and bass drum, this Custom Birch kit will imbue your drumming with the same low fundamental and warm tone that has become a trademark of Yamaha's birch drum designs over the past three decades. Drummers at Sweetwater dig Yamaha's low-mass lugs because of the way they allow the shells to vibrate, resulting in remarkable tone and sustain. Finished in a beautiful high-gloss lacquer, this Yamaha Stage Custom Birch 5-piece shell pack embodies value, quality, and craftsmanship.

100% birch shells

Whenever a beginner/intermediate-stage shell pack boasts all-birch shells, it immediately has our attention! Constructed with six plies of 100% birch, these tom and snare shells embody that iconic Yamaha birch tone that’s highlighted by a punchy warmth and low, hearty, impactful presence. The same can be said for the 7-ply, 7mm bass drum. Each of the shells in this pack endures Yamaha’s Air Seal System of formation, ensuring it will stand up to the rigors of constant practice and gigging transport with tremendous integrity. Trimmed with 45-degree bearing edges, these shells optimize the vibration of each drumhead to aid in proper tonal definition and resonance for an all-around knockout sound.

Shells only. Cymbals, stands, and additional hardware not included.

Hardworking hardware

Shells aren’t the only factor that the Stage Custom Birch refuses to skimp on — it’s also adorned with some fabulously functional hardware. The 1.6mm steel triple-flanged hoops and low-mass Absolute-style lugs provide not only a more round and resonant tone but also extra weight relief for lightweight transport while gigging. Die-cast bass drum claw hooks mean sturdy, rattle-free kicks with authority and peace-of-mind playability free from undependable components. And with the YESS tom mounting system holding your rack shells in place via a singular mounting point, you’ll enjoy impressive resonance and convenient adjustability everywhere you play.

Come one, come all!

You don’t have to spend a fortune to rock out with a tone and style that’ll keep up with the best of them. For beginners just starting, building off a kit like the Yamaha Stage Custom Birch instills the quality sonic and construction characteristics of the craft at an early stage of the drumming journey, establishing an appreciation for the beauty of the instrument and the process. That appreciation is invaluable at any stage, meaning intermediate players will get as much out of the Stage Custom Birch as novices. Plus, with such fine build quality, taking to small stages and rocking out at local gigs are this kit’s bread and butter.

Shells only. Cymbals, stands, and additional hardware not included.

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!

Yamaha's are GREAT DRUMS!
Me and my Dad are both drummers and we both have had other brands ,but after I started playing his different sets of Yamaha drums from his stage customs to his recording customs and in between I realized I would always own Yamaha Drums due to the sound and the great quality of hardware ,I love my Stage customs & recommend them due to several factors like the ease of being able to adjust your Tom's fast and exactly how you want them to set/angle. I have the Stage Customs in natural wood grain & have me a set of Beech Customs. I recommend the Stage Customs for someone looking for a great sound without breaking the bank.
Solid, Great Quality, Impressive Sound
I just turned 60 and I've decided to pick up where I left off in 1991.
After watching countless reviews on YouTube, I decided to investigate this kit. The price was right and working with Kyle, a sales engineer, the decision was made buy it. Absolutely incredible kit!
Kyle was the definition of customer service when I went through this process.
I owned a custom kit back in 1991 that was $3000 back then. This kit achieves the same joy and playability as that more expensive kit. I did keep my original snare from that kit and it's close to the same color as this cranberry kit.
If this kit is in your budget range, I'd advise you to just buy it.

QUESTION YOUR POCKET
This kit will make ANYONE reason in their mind why someone would spend over a grand for a set. When I was a child growing up in the 90s, Yamaha was the name of the game. The drummer at my church played and still plays Yamaha. My high school teacher played and plays Yamaha, some of my drum influences play Yamaha SO I KNEW I was going to get a quality kit with imperial sound, a beautiful lush and at a great value. Tuning is all too important on how these drums will sound and your selection of heads but these drums deliver a sound and a quality that makes anyone question why they would spend thousands of dollars on a kit.

Pro sounding for intermediate $
This kit sounds phenomenal. I've played on DW demo kits in the $2000 price tier that flat out don't have as nice of a tone. The kick has deep clean consistent thump. The toms absolutely sing and have a great tuning range. The only reasons I don't give it a full 5 stars are the single ply heads that come equipped. Also the snare is definitely a good useable piece, but I find that the kick and toms are so gorgeous that a steel snare or higher end wood snare give you a far superior overall sound. I swapped out the Tom batters with Evans G2 clears and the kick batter with and Evans Emad2 and boom, this thing sounds like it should be in a studio. For the price tag it is an absolute steal. If you love playing and have been using the same old kit for years, save up a few bucks and upgrade to this. You will be blown away at the quality and sound for the money. I've had Pearl Premier and Mapex kits and not just entry level and this is hands down the best sounding kit I've ever owned. Budget in an extra $80 or so for new batter heads.
Music background: Playing for 20 years off and on. Did the bar band cover thing for awhile. Did some original instrumental stoner rock with a 3 piece band and made a couple albums of hip hop beats with an awesome keyboard/guitar player. Stopped playing for years due to ann
Bass Drum Head
It's been a while since I've owned my Stage Custom set and I am using a 22" maple with my second DW tom set and Ludwig L402 snare.

I highly recommend these drums for ev n moderate players and schools especially at this price point. Since Yamaha has sold this line for quite some time, they have greater purchase power for their components meaning they can raise the quality but not the price. The YESS mounts no longer pierce the shell and ruin the tone, and they are the same mounts as the high end systems.
TIP: Many have found the REMO coated pinstripe on top and coated diplomat on the bottom to give an EXCELLENT tone, but you must, MUST, MUST!!! get the Evens EMAD2 for the bass drum! The "THUMPIFICATION" is astounding and it's very rich in tone. )It's one of those freak things of a perfect marriage.)
Music background: Retired touring professional, teacher, drum shop guy.
