Reviews

the sound in my head
These replaced a set of 20 strand pure sounds that came with a 70s Slingerland COB Krupa that I've been fixing up as a killer player grade snare. Unfortunately the drum came very dull sounding. Back in round, improvement. New heads, big improvement. This snare wire was the last missing piece.

I think the Pure Sounds that it came with are too dark and dry for a shell with such a dark resonance to it. It's almost like a muffling effect. The chromes give a bit brighter attack giving way to a tailing dark resonance that I think produces a nice gated effect for that drum. Fewer strands = less muffling of resonance, too, so stepping down from 20 to 16 wires enhances the dark resonance against mix-forward brightness of the snares so they don't overwhelm the dark resonance. The result is the best of both worlds: a nice crunchy snare attack with a dark COB resonant tail.

I could see the Pure Sounds working better on a shell where someone wants the snare sound sitting a bit further back in the mix with a brighter shell resonance, I guess.

Half a star reduction because a little bit of sharp wire sticks out of the soldered ends. I don't think that it will be an issue because they are recessed into the plate contour but have a slight concern about them harming the head. The construction is otherwise solid.

I'm thinking of trying 12 strand now...
