JCM800 Tone in a 20-watt Head

The Marshall JCM800 2203 is a certified beast — it’s the tone that defined heavy metal. The Studio Classic takes that incendiary tone and packs it into a 20-watt head. It conjures up everything from rich and full cleans to high-gain mayhem, but in an amp you can carry with one hand. The Studio Classic is loaded with all the player-friendly features you need, including a master volume, 3-band EQ with Presence control, preamp volume, effects loop, and DI output. You also get a power reduction circuit for attaining cranked-up tones without violating a noise ordinance. When you want JCM800 tone but aren’t rocking in an arena, reach for the Studio Classic — it delivers the goods.

JCM800 — the professional rocker’s choice amp

The Studio Classic is a low-watt version of Marshall’s coveted JCM800 2203. So, who loves the Marshall JCM800 2203? More guitarists than we could ever name, and some of the most famous guitarists of all time would be on the list. Angus Young of AC/DC, Kerry King from Slayer, and Zakk Wylde are just a few of the hardest rockers on earth that chose the JCM800 2203 for its tonal tenacity. If you’re looking for an amp that will deliver clean tones, look elsewhere. If you want maximum tonal aggression, plug into a Studio Classic — it delivers true-to-life JCM800 tone!

Loaded with all the player-friendly features you need

Consider yourself lucky, because the Marshall Studio Classic sports features not found on the original JCM800. An effects loop makes integrating your pedals and external processors a breeze. Attaining cranked tones at listenable volumes is a breeze thanks to a power reduction circuit. You also get a DI output for easy recording or routing to a PA. The guitarists at Sweetwater value the Studio Classic’s modern flexibility almost as much as we appreciate its vintage tone.

Marshall Studio Classic Tube Head Features:

  • Packs the incendiary tone of a JCM800 2203 into a 20-watt head
  • Conjures up everything from rich and full cleans to high-gain mayhem
  • Separate Preamp Volume and Master Volume controls allow for high-gain tones at low volumes
  • 3-band EQ with Presence control supplies flexible sound shaping
  • Effects loop makes integrating your effects pedals and processors easy
  • Power reduction circuit takes wattage down to a bedroom-friendly 5 watts
  • DI output for easy recording or routing to a PA
What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

SC20H w/ SC212 Cab bundle
Super fast shipping! Andy Rice is very knowledgeable and helpful. Sounds amazing! Will definitely rattle walls. With a pedalboard it is a very versatile amp with raw sound. Highly recommend.
Love the JCM Studio
First off .. this amp is NO BABY AMP !!!! Ok, so it's no 50w or 100watt but it's PLENTY loud . I've it mostly on 5w and even then I use an attenuator for home use. I've jammed with my band with it on 20w with a Harley Benton 212 cab and it's easily held its own.
I use a avid 11r with this and it sounds amazing. Still prefer my 1996 JCM 900 by a nose hair but this thing is great.

Thanks Marshall
Roar of the 80s
the amp without pedals or mods are mostley AC/DC, if you turn up the gain or bass it wil fart out or sound wierd.

just like the big one it is hella bright, but i just turn the treble and presence down low. a bit up if i get lost in the mix tone knob on the guitar is alos useful here.

if you want it to roar like the 80s heroes, ha OD pedal or Legendary Mods MR Scary makes this amp tight and angry. ps it an easy install with great customer service form the man himself.

i use it with a coverband to nail alot of the tones of the past, cool little thing. 3 years without problems

Great JCM800 tone!
I received my 20 Watt Marshall JCM800 amp from Sweetwater. I am amazed at how good it does sound. It seemed to me that you needed 100 watts to get the full Marshall tone. NO..
This amp has a great preamp tone stack and at studio volumes creates great guitar tone.
The JCM800 tone is unmatched by most amps. Takes drive pedals very well. The effects loop is a great asset.
All in all, an iconic amp with graat tone and a good small package.

Best amp I’ve ever had
Marshall is back. This amp is absolutely tremendous. It really starts to sound amazing after I've been playing for about 30 minutes. Definitely loud, I play it with an attenuator through the matching cabinet two greenbacks.

Thank you to Sebby Woldt for always being helpful. I can always get him on the phone to help with sales and most importantly support issues. It is rare these days that you can get knowledgeable help on the phone.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?
Ashton Vaudt
The Marshall SC20H Studio Classic is, in just about every way, a modern, accessible JCM800. This amp is capable of those nice, chimey cleans as well as the classic, quintessential Marshall drive heard for decades. On my last album, all lead guitar parts were done through this amp. It's a great way to get a true legendary amp in an affordable package.

There are countless "British"-style guitar amplifiers out there, but take it from the lifelong guitarists and tone connoisseurs at Sweetwater, when it comes to Marshall tone, there's nothing like the real thing. We've played them all, from vintage JTM45s and the ultra-cool Plexi reissue to modern handmade masterpieces such as the JVM410. There isn't a model among them we can't recommend with total confidence, and that includes their more affordable models too, like MG, DSL, and Code series amps. Thanks to our tight relationship with Marshall, Sweetwater's always on the cutting edge of their latest designs, custom models, and limited-edition gems. If you want iconic tone from across the pond, you want Marshall, and your Sweetwater Sales Engineer will help you find the perfect one.
