Roland Has Hit a Homerun Here
I was never satisfied with the original piano sounds on the Roland RD88, but I adore the playability, keybed and PH4 response. I have been using it to play my UAD Ravel Grand and other VST's instead. Until now. The RD88 EX upgrade sounded by review pretty darn good. Well, it's better. The pianos and EP's sound beautiful, much fuller bodied and provides for a smoother tone across the keys like a real acoustic piano, without the digital tinty sounds of the originals. The grand piano, by my benchmark, is very good, particularly the tone and the dynamics. With the proper judicious reverb applied it sounds like a real grand piano in a concert setting. I am VERY satisfied. I finally have the piano I wanted on my RD88.

Music background: 40+ years playing and composing
RD-88 Upgrade
I purchased this hoping for a great improvment in the marginal piano sounds that are included with the RD-88. I am not impressed with the marginal improvment. As a jazz player I love the action of the RD-88 but the piano sounds are very cold, impersonal and a bit metalic and ringy even with all effects disabled. I think these sounds are modeled rather than sampled and that may be at issue even with the upgrade.
