Put DAWs on the Defense with This Standalone Recorder!

The R12 MultiTrak from Zoom captures the power and immediacy of classic 8-track recorders with the welcome addition of modern updates like touchscreen track editing! The R12 MultiTrak is great for capturing ideas, scraps, and even full songs without the complicated setup of DAWs, computers, and other equipment. It easily connects to microphones, instruments, or line level devices like keyboards and mixers via two TRS/XLR combo jacks, and it can record up to eight tracks per project. Fleshing out song ideas is easy — just use your own instruments or try out the R12's powerful pre-loaded drum machine, onboard effects, and patch options. The R12 even features a built-in synth that can be controlled via touchscreen or an external keyboard! If you love the feel of hardware recording but yearn for optimized workflow and touchscreen control, the Zoom R12 MultiTrak from Sweetwater is the clear solution to add to your cart!

Touchscreen track editing and effects

Hardware recorders in the past often relied on clunky editing systems that bogged artists down with time stamp entry and complex button sequences. The R12 does away with all that by incorporating useful DAW-like drag-and-drop editing features that streamline the experience. A full-color LCD touchscreen interface lets you cut, copy, loop, and edit your tracks with speed and precision like never before! The R12's editing flow works much like a typical DAW, but the R12 has the clear advantage of straightforward, reliable performance with fewer distractions and potential failure points than your average computer rig. Beyond recording and editing, the R12 also lets you fine-tune tracks with classic studio tools. Options include stereo panning, 3-band EQ, and effects like reverb, delay, and chorus are available, plus the option to compress incoming signal on Inputs 1 and 2. Of course, you can store, create, and apply patches of multiple effects. There are also 40 preset patches included, plus the ability to create new patches using Zooms’ Guitar Lab on an external device.

Onboard drum machine and synthesizer

More than just a recorder, the R12 enables you to flesh out and enhance tracks with a built-in drum machine and synthesizer. The drum machine offers 150 different drum loops across 30 different genres, conveniently broken into song-structure units that make applying them a breeze. The built-in synthesizer is ideal for adding melody, ambience, and depth to full songs and demos alike. Control it using the R12’s touchscreen or plug in an external keyboard via USB for an authentic feel and even more control!

Three ways to power

With a trio of power options, the R12 is extremely portable. Four AA batteries will power the unit for roughly five hours, which makes it perfect for field use. An extra set of batteries or a USB battery pack is enough to ensure long-lasting performance fit for marathon creativity and mobile use. For homebodies, an R12 wall power adapter is available separately.

Robust I/O

There’s a nearly endless list of ways to plug in your Zoom R12 MultiTrak and put it to use. Onboard you’ll find two TRS/XLR combo jacks with high-quality preamps and optional compression — each jack also offers 48V phantom power for condenser microphones! The rear panel also features a 3.5mm out for headphones and stereo 1/4-inch outputs for connecting with studio monitors. The R12’s USB-C jack serves many uses: it can be used to charge the recorder for importing or exporting audio files, and even for charging the device via USB battery packs. To top things off, it also lets you connect the R12 to computers and DAWs. Once connected, the R12 may be used work as an audio interface or a DAW controller.

Intro into Multitrack recording

I purchased this multitrack recorder to record myself and experiment with sound. I also like the Zoom G1FOUR X so I was feeling the company would provide a solid intro into multitrack recording.

Pros:
Small size can be taken along anywhere.
Drum machine and MIDI controller.
1/4" left and right hand monitor outputs
1/8" headphone outputs
On unit editing via touch screen.
Panning
8 tracks available.
- If more needed you can combine and mix down a part as needed and import it as a track.

Neutral:
2 Inputs (All that I need since I can only play one instrument at a time.)

Cons:
Touchscreen size is to small. (Should be 1.5 to 2 times larger.)
No app interface for editing. (Apple I-Pad only)
- This is a big killer since the touchscreen is so small.
- Why Guitar lab without investing in ability to view and control via an app.

I feel that the need for the guitar lab is not really there. The voice features are useful though.
It would be nice if Zoom added the ability to have an interface to make the system friendlier to edit.

Overall I am glad that I purchased the unit and find it usefull.

Good sound, but no DAW replacement

I have previously owned the following zoom products: MRS 12cd, PS 04, R16, H2, H2n, H6. Zoom has made some real strides in sound quality, preamps and conversion, while hamstringing themselves by losing features. The R 12 is a great example. Recording mandolin, banjo, guitar and vocals, I'm pleased with the sound of my tracks using an EV RE 20 and a Triton Audio Fethead. However, this R12 will never take the Place of a DAW. There is no auto punch feature. The way effects are applied to individual tracks is limited. Drum beat selection and BPMs area even more limited. I like the touchscreen, but if you are older than 3yrs, it's hard to be precise enough with your fingertips to maneuver through the menu accurately. Maybe a touch screen stylus would help. If Zoom had simply taken a clue from the R 24 feature set and updated the preamps, AD/DA conversion, and headphone amp, you could make very good recordings ITB. My advice is to buy this recorder if you are looking for a portable way to get some tracks down outside your studio and then bring them into your DAW for mixing. The battery life and USB power options make the R12 very useful in that way. If you want to replace your DAW, better luck next time.

I wanted to like it

I had a Zoom R8 and sold it to replace it with this new model. I'm disappointed. So I want to put my thoughts down in writing because I always forget stuff on the phone. And so you and your team can learn from this because it's a new product. So, got it up and running, things seem to work well. Touch screen is nice. So I like to start recording with drums and use that track as a metronome. So you can preview a drum pattern/loop before you load the track. I chose a pattern, and the preview shows the BPM of 120 so I loaded it into the track and went back hit play. It was way faster than the preview. That's because it loads to the set BPM in the project which was buried in a menu so I went there to change the tempo and it got all out of time because the click tempo changed but not the track tempo!

Apparently you cannot change the tempo on drum tracks in real time. You have to delete the track, go into the project settings menu and set the tempo (stopped, not playing) then go back find the pattern again and load it and hope you got it right. Think of the amount of work that is if you're loading a intro, then verse, copying and pasting the verse drum track, then chorus, another verse, chorus, and outtro, if you had to delete all that and reload and place all those parts again just if i decide it might be a little too fast or slow? With the R8, and any other recorder in recent history I've seen including DAWS you could change the tempo during playback. Simple.

Not this one. That's a dealbreaker for me and I would think many other home recordists. That and the fact that you can't bounce tracks. Bafflingly, all of which you can do with the R8. How the hell can you set the right tempo on your drum track without being able to hear it? So basically we've got a 2022 product that takes a huge step back pre-2011. I spent hours going over every single menu and the manual trying to figure this out. Also, if I tried to use all 3 the effects in a chain I got a processor overload error no matter what effects I was trying to use. And there's no punch in or out function.

I may just have a defective unit, a firmware/software bug, (which there is no available firmware update on their website at this time for this model) or I'm missing something really bad. Wouldn't put it past me. if that is the case I'm gonna feel really stupid. But hey If the tempo slider doesn't adjust the tempo, what does? I do not recommend this product. It's absolutely awful. I'm going back to my trusty Zoom R8.
