Let SKB Haul Your Gear!

SKB's R106 will protect your gear while making setup and teardown easier than ever. With a 10U slanted rackmount on top, over a 6U rackmount in front, the R106 is the perfect case for bands that haul their own PA gear. Not only can you rackmount your rackable mixer, you can add the SKB AV-8 shelf for a solid laptop shelf! The roto-molded design gives the R106 an appalling amount of strength, and due to the stackable design, it's the ideal case for schools and churches that may need to store a lot of equipment in a tight space. For security, two locking TSA trigger latches keep your lid where it should be. Factor in the side access ports for cable routing, and the removable rear panel for quick access to your gear, and you've got a seriously useful case that won't let you down.

SKB R106 Features:

  • Roto-molded design for superior strength and endurance
  • One-piece, Linear Medium Density Polyethylene base gives you the confidence to stack 'em up!
  • SKB-patented TSA locking trigger latches keep the lid where it needs to be while providing easy access
  • Cable access ports for easy cable routing make setup and teardown a breeze
  • Optional shelf is available for a secure laptop/mixer platform

Note: This item comes with the case only. No pictured rack gear or drawers are included.

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Fantastic Live Case
I use this as my complete live midi rig. I have a couple rack synth/sequencers up top and a couple synths and effects in the front. I run my audio out, midi out and power connection out the side ports. This rack case is sturdy, easy to set up, easy to move and has plenty of room. Great for an all-in-one setup! I have it with the 1SKB-AV8 shelf up top for extra bits of gear that I might not need immediate access to.
Just not friendly.
The other criticisms are valid, but the thing that I find most annoying about this case is the handles - there is just no comfortable way to carry this case. Also, the back panel can be a pain to remove. I don't think the engineers on this project spent any time living with it.
Not the usual SKB
I was pretty disappointed when I got the case. As stated below, the top is absolute junk; however, the lower portion of the case is what one would expect from SKB. Thankfully, the lid on mine was not broken when arrived but I could easily see how it would break if the case is being used to gig with. Also, the TSA latches are a joke.... SKB put lockable latches on the lid; however, one does not have to remove the lid to remove the rear panel. I would have much preferred to see a roto molded top and sides, like what we have come to expect from SKB.

Fails to Deliver for What it Costs
I had seen the negative reviews when I decided to purchase this case, but had also seen some positive reviews. There are not many options for combo (mixer / front rack) cases in this weight range. There are numerous options available in the ~50 pound range, but the lighter weight of this case makes it appealing. It seemed like a viable option, but overall, this case fails to deliver for what it costs. As a result, I will continue to use this case, but I suspect I will be taking advantage of SKBs warranty.

I do not recall any of the pictures I saw showing that the front part of the lid is hinged, so it can fold back when the lid is removed. This makes the lid less bulky when removed, and easier to put somewhere out of the way.

The lid on mine was broken on arrival. This is not terribly surprising considering it is made from a rubber modified styrene, which is somewhat brittle compared to some other polymers (such as the polyethylene they used for the main case). As others have noted, there is absolutely no way I would stack anything on top of this case. It is probably worth noting that it is also quite flammable, so not really the best choice for something that is likely to be carrying power amplifiers.

As I saw mentioned elsewhere, this thing is BULKY. There are certain minimum dimensions that must be maintained given what it is and what it is intended to carry, but this thing could be a bit smaller (and therefore easier to handle).

This case ONLY has rack rails on the front (and top) and does NOT have rack rails on the back (or elsewhere inside the case). For what this thing costs it should have the rails in the back. If the margins on production are so tight that this is not possible, I would would rather pay the $5 extra that it would cost to add them.

This case is flimsy in general. One of the product pictures shows it with two QSC GX5s mounted in it, and there is absolutely no way I would mount two of those amplifiers without reinforcement or modification of the case. It is also ironic considering that QSC specifically states that these amplifiers should be rack mounted front AND back.

The handles are riveted to the sides, and they did use washers to back the rivets, but should have used backing plates and reinforced that area (which they did not). I fully expect the rivets to pull through or the case to crack in that area.

The case geometry does not seem to match most of SKBs other cases. I think it might fit well on one or two of their other products, but the "official" expansion case is the 1SKB-R1906, which costs $400 (astronomical if it is the same level of quality as this case). It would be nice if this case worked with some of their other products, but I guess that would make it harder to sell the more expensive expansion case.

This case does not have a single seal anywhere. This is not strictly necessary, but it would be nice to help guard against ingress of moisture and dust. For the intended purpose of this case and what it costs there is no reason not to include a few seals.

Frankly, this case is a pretty good example of poor product design.
Pass on this case
First off, I'm a big fan of SKB guitar cases. They're all I use, and they have all been built like a tank. So when I began looking for a mixer/rack case, SKB was the only thing I considered.

The case arrived with a broken cover. The cover is made of extremely poor quality plastic. I chose to fix the broken cover with a bit of super glue. The portion that I fixed with super glue is the most sturdy part of the cover, bar none.

The handles appear to be made of the same poor quality plastic that the covers are made from. They leave me feeling like its only a matter of time before the handles break, leaving my mixer and rack gear smeared on the pavement.

Three of the four rack rails were built correctly. However, the lower left rack rail was not built to the same tolerance as the other 3 rails. I could not thread the rack screws into any of the holes on this rail. As it stands now, the case is unusable until I can get a replacement rail from SKB.

The case itself is actually pretty sturdy. So if your application for this case is a home studio where you won't be moving your equipment around very much, then this case might be for you. But if you are considering taking this case on the road, I highly suggest you look elsewhere. Sound gear is too expensive to trust this particular case from SKB.
