The QuNexus's Smart Sensor keys recognize pressure, location, and the velocity of your playing. You gain control of CV, OSC, USB, and MIDI in a single device. Its built-in arpeggiator and step sequencer allow you to sketch out ideas without having to dive into your DAW. The illuminated, touch-sensitive keys give you valuable performance feedback. Let the Keith McMillen Instruments QuNexus show you a whole new world of music creation and control.

A portable controller like no other

If you're looking for maximum control in a minimum of space, you need to check out the Keith McMillen Instruments QuNexus portable controller. This isn't just another USB controller, the QuNexus will control MIDI, OSC and USB devices, and Control Voltage. Beyond this great functionality, the QuNexus takes control to a new horizon with support for MPE-capable instruments. Smart Sensor keys can detect velocity, pressure, and location to give you an amazing range of control. The Keith McMillen Instruments QuNexus brings a new perspective on what a controller can do.

Smart Sensor keys give you amazing control

Not every key is made the same. The Keith McMillen Instruments QuNexus takes your typical controller key into the next dimension. They react to velocity, pressure, and location/tilt. The keys can be mapped to trigger or control certain parameters depending on the pressure you place on the key. Set it up, so that light pressure is just the note sounding, but as you press harder a filter is triggered and controlled by the how hard you push on it. Besides pressure, the QuNexus keys also reacts to the location/tilt of the key.

Lighted keys help you perform better

The Keith McMillen Instruments QuNexus has illuminated keys that change color depending on pressure. This gives you valuable performance feedback when playing the instrument, no more guessing. These lighted keys are also great when using the QuNexus as a step sequencer creating beats and loops. It's also perfect for beginners to begin exploring keyboards.

Keith McMillen Instruments QuNexus Keyboard Controller Features:

  • Amazingly versatile multi-function keyboard controller
  • Control MIDI, Control Voltage, OSC, and USB from a single device
  • Supports MPE for use with MIDI Polyphonic Expression-capable instruments
  • Smart Sensor keys are velocity, pressure, and location sensitive
  • Updated key and pitch bend algorithm based on the K-Board Pro 4

  • Each sequencer track can be independently assigned to any output
  • QuNexus editor software makes it easy to program and save your own custom configurations

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Very capable and handy

Not much else to say about it. I like it. I wish they still made it in black - that one looks better, until it doesn't (after the surface finish gets gummed-up). It does everything i was hoping it would, and there's really nothing else quite like it. The biggest limitation, i'd say, is there's only 4 presets. I haven't used mine enough to require more than 4 presets, but i can imagine it being a little annoying if i ever do need more.

Updated QuNexus Red Review

I just had to add to my earlier review, to say that I am now in possession of GeoShred Pro app and have purchased several GeoSwam instruments to use with it. The combination is AMAZING! I can play expressively with the Tenor Sax, Oboe, Clarinets, Flute, and Cello instruments, and the QuNexus has the expressivity and tactile feedback that make me feel like I am playing "real" acoustinc instruments, albeit with fingers and not breath control. I use it with an old, underpowered iPad, and it still far surpasses "the price of admission."

It's an instrument!

Just scratching the surface....

Out of the box, my QuNexus Red was functional and fun in minutes. It was, indeed, "MIDI Compliant" and worked nicely as a velocitiy-sensitive keyboard. It took me a few readings of the (very nicely executed) on-line manual to get the hang of the "Shift and...." menu control model. There's a ton of stuff I don't have any idea about yet, and some odd surprises when I didn't know that a certain software would receive a signal I didn't expect, so an octave shift or arpeggiation or ??? might happen. All of that is written off to new operator ignorance. What concerned me for a day or two was that I didn't (back to the shift comment) reliably get the MPE mode, and couldn't sense all the expressivity I had hoped for (and purchased it for.) While looking about on the internet for ideas, I happened upon the "Poly Expression" group, which is a group of MPE-users who specialize in such hardware and software, and a kind member there recommended I try the free Roli app on my iPad. This is apparently intended to preview and support their own line of MPE hardware (like Seaboard and now Lumi Keys) but works without them, and has some 25 presets that all work with the QuNexus.

ET VOILA!!! All of a sudden, when output from the keyboard, either through ThumbJam or direct to Roli app, the MPE mode let me do what I had hoped for: I can vary the sound (like a bent string, or pitch wheel on a keyboard, or wah-wah pedal?) for every note, individually. And, multiple keys can have different levels of variation, and different volumes. It really does allow pretty amazing expressivity, and at the lowest (by quite a bit) cost for any hardware controller I have seen. I now realize how little I have done with it, relative to all the sequencing/controlling/recording/playing options, but I can get to them as I progress. For now, the QuNexus lets me play with acoustic-like expressivity, when put through MPE-appropriate software, and with something like ThumbJam, it has the capacity to play beautifully realistic sampled instruments, too. I need much more work to tap its potential, but it is great fun, great value, and great-sounding. My intent was to "try out MPE" while saving for more expensive hardware; now I am in no particular hurry while I explore the broad range of possiblilities with this device. My only "wish list" item is an iOS version of the editor software, so I don't have to adjust keyboard sensitivity and such with the PC, but it isn't a big deal....just takes a minute to swap and test setting changes, and it doesn't have to happen often (if at all) once you have it set up to suit your style. It's a great doorway into MIDI and particularly MPE, and I can't put it down!
Music background: New to electronica; old folk, trad and acoustic player
