The Ultimate Prophet-10 from Synth Legend Dave Smith

Renowned synth designer Dave Smith is back, and he’s brought with him the most powerful Prophet-10 yet! A reimagination of the iconic 10-voice polyphonic synth, the Prophet-10 Rev4 is packed with features from every iteration of the Prophet-10. It inherits its ultra-stable voltage-controlled oscillators from the Rev3 and provides you with a choice between the Rev1 and Rev2’s Rossum-designed filter or the Rev3’s Curtis-designed filter. A unique vintage knob even lets you choose from behavior characteristics of the earlier versions. With its knob-per-function architecture, the Prophet-10 never fails to inspire — just ask the synthesists at Sweetwater! To get you started right out of the box, the Prophet-10 comes loaded with a stellar selection of factory presets, and it includes 200 user slots for storing your custom-made patches. Not only does the Prophet-10 sound incredible, but it’s also contained in a collector-grade steel housing, with hand-oiled black walnut accents and end cheeks. Dave Smith and the folks at Sequential struck gold with the Prophet-10, a drool-worthy synth for analog aficionados!

Rock-solid oscillators

The twin beating hearts of the Prophet-10 are its dual Curtis analog CEM 3340 VCOs. Found on Rev3 Prophet-10s, the CEM 3340 VCOs are rock solid, with virtually no tuning drift. Their implementation in the Rev3 represented a major turning point in the design of the Prophet-10, enhancing the performance and sonic quality of the powerhouse synth. As on the legacy models, the Prophet-10 Rev4 offers simultaneous selectable waveshapes — sawtooth and pulse on oscillator A, and sawtooth, pulse, and triangle on oscillator B, with pulse width modulation on both and hard sync for shaping the timbres of the oscillators. With the CEM 3340 VCOs, you have the ideal building blocks for creating harmonically rich analog patches.

Lush, dreamy analog filters

Dave and the team at Sequential went above and beyond for the Prophet-10’s filter section. Users can choose from two authentic re-creations of classic four-pole resonant lowpass filters — the Dave Rossum-designed 2140 (a modern update of the original 2040 found on the Rev1 and Rev2), and the Doug Curtis-designed CEM 3320. The 2140 is perfect for gristly bass lines and dense, sweeping pads, while the 3320 excels at dialing in laser-sharp high end for cutting lead lines. Both filters can be driven into maddening self-oscillation, and a dedicated 4-stage ADSR filter envelope gives you ample control over shaping the behavior of the filters.

Mountains of modulation

If you’re the kind of synthesist who likes to strip things back to the INIT patch and dig into some serious sound design, then the Prophet-10 is for you! Though simple, its modulation controls give you incredible flexibility to create vintage-style basses, leads, pads, brass, and strings, or generate brain-bending textures and effects. The Prophet-10’s single LFO offers three simultaneous waveshapes — sawtooth, triangle, and square — and an initial amount control. Use the LFO for pitch modulation and PWM of oscillators A and B or send it to the filter cutoff. And assign any of the mod destinations to the mod wheel. Additionally, Prophet-10’s Poly-Mod section lets you use the filter envelope and oscillator B as mod sources for affecting oscillator A’s frequency and pulse width, as well as the filter cutoff.

Deluxe performance controls

One of the most appealing aspects of analog synthesizers is the tactile experience of interacting with their knobs, switches, sliders, and wheels — and the Prophet-10 has plenty! With a knob-per-function design, the Prophet-10 treats you with detailed control over every parameter, so you can turn patches into living, breathing performances. The mod wheel and spring-loaded pitch wheel are highly responsive and a delight to use, and the Prophet-10’s premium semi-weighted Fatar keyboard feels exceptional under your fingers. It’s ideal for taking advantage of the Prophet-10’s velocity and aftertouch capabilities.

Crank up the vintage vibe

While inspired by vintage Prophet-10s, this latest iteration boasts modern reliability and high-fidelity sonics. But what if you want to inject a little bit of old-school instability into your sound? No problem! The Prophet-10 features a nifty Vintage control knob that lets you alter the behavior according to its revision model. Keep it pristine or go back in time all the way to the rare and highly temperamental Rev1. Do you think part of the charm of vintage analog synths is their unpredictability? Then you’ll dig this feature!

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:

Reviews

The Prophet 10 is: Dave Smith's original poly synth, fully realized.
5 voices gives you the note-stealing quirkiness emoted with that beautiful raw tone that makes the Prophet 5 a classic. 10 voices gives you grace and class. I have owned both. First, the 5, because I wanted to be true to the design. I really struggled mentally about upgrading to the 10. Now, I am so thankful that I did. The extra voices allow me to express myself freely. Sometimes I'll switch to 5 voice mode, but 10 voices really is smoother. I read in Psalm 33:2 to make music to the Lord on an instrument of 10 strings. So, I call this my Space Harp, because it exudes righteous electronic awesomeness with an almost wooden, earthy, natural quality that is pure joy on the ears. It is not just a synth. It is a musical instrument.

***If you have relentless tuning issues: Reset Globals and Clear Calibration i.e. Hold Record and Press Globals, then Hold Record and Press Tune. My tuning has been much more stable since doing this.

Just warm analog goodness with 10 voices and it's a Prophet
I've always loved Dave Smith keyboards. My first synth was a Pro One. I bought a Prophet 12, and liked it - still do. It's a great hybrid synth. I bought a Prophet Xl. Beautiful sampler. Lovely pianos. BUT, I was still looking for something. I found it in the Prophet 10. The Prophet 10 has everything the vintage Prophet 5 had - more. It has both chip sets, 10 voices, and with the software update, you can split the keyboard and layer 2 sounds. For a long time my "go to" for synths has been an Access Virus TI2 - for sheer versatility and great sound. This keyboard, the Prophet 10, takes the quality sound of a Virus, as well as the Prophet 12, but takes the digital edge off of it. The sound is unmistakably analog. And better - it is unmistakably a Prophet. Buy this keyboard.

It’s beautiful
Great would recommend it plus sweetwater gave me a beautiful promo pricing
Win Win and huntley was awsome to work with
Sounds good at any time.
It has a nice, rich, organic sound in any knob state.

I have used virtual analog synthesizers and digital synthesizers, but was dissatisfied with the sound of each.
I wanted to know what the "real thing" sounded like, so I took the plunge, even though it was an expensive purchase.

The Prophet-10 sounds like magic.
If I had to categorize it, I don't think it would be another outlandish sound.
But somehow it is beautiful and perfect and makes me want to touch it all the time.
I decided to make my effects pedals real analog instead of digital, and I'm having fun with the Roland RE-201.It's a great match.

I was torn between the Module version and the Keyboard version, but I didn't want to be bothered with unnecessary MIDI problems and alleged latency, so I went with the Keyboard version.
It's big, but beautiful, and a live instrument that can be played as soon as you turn one on, which was important to me.

If I had a complaint, it would be that the parameters are probably completely digitally managed.
For example, if you turn the filter slowly, you will notice that it changes in a staircase-like fashion.
It would have been nice if it could be adjusted steplessly in analog and only digitally managed when saving tones.

The wooden body is not as shiny as the vintage one shown in the photo, and it feels smooth and matte.
I am hoping that the wood will change in appearance as I use it.

Also, just for reference for beginners like me.
I can't use pedals that support half sustain; the YAMAHA FC-3 didn't respond, but the YAMAHA FC-5 did.
Dream Synth
This is a dream synth. It's massive sweet spot that lets you really focus on what's important. The midi and usb inputs allow you to get in there to modulate many things if you feel stuck. Playing this straight through speakers without compression is an experience

The only downside is it sets a new bar for me on what a great synth is. Some of my other synths now feel like toys.

I was worried I might not love the wood grain, but it looks incredible. My synth happens to go from light to dark grain matching in all the panels. It looks like a gradient. They just knocked it out of the park.
