An Unparalleled Aural Odyssey
Drawing from the 1972 analog icon, the engineers and sound designers of Cherry Audio spared no effort in re-creating the classic Pro Soloist synth in the virtual realm with the usual exacting precision. From the original’s “Resonator Bank” parallel filters to its 30 expressive presets, everything loved and lauded about the prog-rock powerhouse is at your fingertips. But why stop there? Emulation was only the beginning, and thanks to the unmatched precision and circuit-modeling DSP work of award-winning developer Mark Barton, Cherry Audio would break open the secrets of the original, granting access to levels of detail previously impossible with the physical unit. Much to the delight of synthesists and production pros at Sweetwater, Cherry Audio introduced a laundry list of new possibilities, from onboard studio-grade FX, a dual-layer architecture, and full 16-voice polyphony to new oscillators, a modulation matrix, per-layer dynamics controls, and more. Engineered to inspire, the Pro Soloist captures the distinctive analog magic of the original, imbuing it with the limitless potential of virtual control — and this is barely scratching the surface.

Versatile voicing and powerful playback
Powerful as it was, Cherry Audio’s Pro Soloist dramatically ups the ante with a slew of augmentations that bolster its predecessor’s capabilities while expanding its architecture with deeper controls and tools that were either infeasible or impossible to incorporate in 1972. This VI transforms the classic monophonic menace into a dual-layer behemoth, complete with a 16-voice polyphony and per-layer programming that includes panning, volume, stacked or split modes, and even individual sounds for massive, complex sonics. Mono playback modes include retrigger, legato, low-, and high-note priority, and a unique “last note” polyphonic option simulates the use of polyphonic aftertouch by way of a monophonic aftertouch controller, leading to distinctive, expressive possibilities. In addition to the 30 iconic presets from its predecessor, Cherry Audio tapped a formidable array of sound design veterans to craft more than 400 presets that expertly thread the needle between vintage style and the wealth of latent potential within the VI’s evolved appointments.
Analog character meets infinite digitality
In the burgeoning days of analog synthesis, one of the biggest hurdles to moving these instruments outside the realm of laboratory science and into the hands of working musicians was a matter of usage. New sounds meant new possibilities, but without a way to contextualize these radical new sonic hues, it would be a hard sell. The success of the original Pro Soloist owes significantly to its 30 onboard presets that expertly emulated an array of real-life instrumental sounds, from brass and woodwinds to strings and percussion, as well as its five parallel, 2-pole bandpass filters that comprise the famous “Resonator Bank.” Cherry Audio’s Pro Soloist not only faithfully recreates the scope of possibility afforded by these features, but the company uncaged the circuitry through the VI’s Edit Mode, granting you detailed control over the inner workings of its filters, with individually variable frequency curves, alongside ADSR and AR envelope generators. Plus, the LFO can be tempo-synched with sine, ramp, sawtooth, and square waveforms, making for an exceptionally rich range of texture-crafting. This is reinforced by the 12 studio-grade effects Cherry Audio masterfully integrated into the Pro Soloist framework, including distortion, a multi-stage phaser, three varieties of stereo echo/delay, and five styles of spacious reverb, all of which can be tempo-synced and edited at both global and per-layer levels.
Exquisite expression and endless modulation
By revealing the inner workings of the Pro Soloist, Cherry Audio paved the way for another exciting addition to the reimagined synth: a six-slot modulation matrix. With 22 sources and 58 destinations, expressivity is elevated to staggering heights. You can modulate the VCO with ADSR pulse-width modulation (PWM), AR PWM, LFO PWM, or LFO FM, or deploy the ADSR, AR, LFO, velocity, or keyboard tracking to use for filter-inversion or modulation of the smooth 24dB/oct VCF. The primary VCO comes in several shades, from the classic sawtooth and pulse-wave options to the new Super Wave, purpose-built for powerful leads, basses, and more. Cherry Audio’s Pro Soloist even captures the grit of the original’s Growl parameter: a specialized low-frequency oscillator that can — you guessed it — be used as a source within the mod matrix. Complementing all this is a fresh take on the proto-aftertouch design that made up the original’s Touch Sensor keyboard, which provides bona fide aftertouch control that can be assigned to one of eight different values, like brilliance, growl, volume, pitch bend tremolo, or vibrato — you can even assign them all, and this isn’t even with the mod matrix.
