Chris Stapleton’s Preferred Amp

The ’62 Princeton Chris Stapleton Edition takes everything you love about a 6G2 Princeton and outfits it with the Grammy Award–winning artist’s preferred modifications. There’s loads of snappy chime and twang on tap here; although if you crank it, this 6V6-loaded combo can snarl with the best of them. The ’62 Princeton kicks out the perfect amount of volume for studio sessions — that said, it’s loud enough to rock smaller venues. Enjoy true-to-life vintage Fender tone. Embellish your playing with an output tube-biased tremolo circuit. Beyond that, Chris Stapleton’s chosen aesthetics make this amp look as great as it sounds. The ’62 Princeton Chris Stapleton Edition includes a 1-button tremolo switch and a retro-styled fabric cover.

A legendary amplifier design

When Fender originally released their Princeton guitar amplifier, their intent was to offer a good practice amplifier for guitarists needing to work on their chops. But the model quickly caught on with recording guitarists for how effortlessly it delivered both chiming cleans and sweet tube-amp breakup. Whether speaking about the original tweed designs in the 1940s or the iconic Brownface model of ’62, the Princeton has been a mainstay with players for over 50 years.

Chris Stapleton’s chosen mods

The Fender ’62 Princeton Chris Stapleton Edition combines the classic 6G2 circuit with Chris’s chosen modifications. It’s the real deal — it boasts vintage Blue tone caps, Schumacher transformers, and an output tube-biased tremolo circuit. Aesthetic touches include a rough, textured brown vinyl covering, wheat grille cloth, and thick, dark brown leather handle. It also boasts a dark brown control panel with dark brown radio knobs, an engraved brass plate with Chris Stapleton initials on its rear panel, and a retro-styled Filson twill fabric cover.

Studio stalwart

Here’s a great example of an amp whose popularity and usefulness never went away — and now it’s more popular than ever among guitarists! The ’62 Princeton combines portability, tube tone, and outright vibe to make a classic package that gets the job done for a range of styles and applications. Studio session? This amp’s 12-watt output puts it squarely in the favored small amp category that studio cats love: It’s robust enough to move some air, but the wattage is low enough to let you crank it up and let its dual 6V6 tube power section really go to work. This is how the classic tones were put to tape, and it works!

Fender ’62 Princeton Chris Stapleton Edition Tube Combo Amp Features:

  • 12-watt tube combo amp with chosen mods by platinum-selling country artist Chris Stapleton
  • Authentic vintage tone via Blue tone caps, Schumacher transformers, and an output tube-biased tremolo circuit
  • Killer external aesthetics include a rough, textured brown vinyl covering, wheat grille cloth, and a thick, dark brown leather handle
  • Adorned with an eye-catching dark brown control panel, dark brown radio knobs, and engraved brass plate with Chris Stapleton signature
  • Resonant solid pine cabinet
  • 12" Eminence Special Design speaker is clear and smooth
  • Dual 6V6 power tubes deliver classic tones
  • Includes a 1-button tremolo switch and a retro-styled Filson twill fabric cover

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

Note: While demo items from Fender do not include the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation warranty, you can shop with confidence knowing that this item is backed and covered by Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Probably my favorite of the Fender HW series...

I own too many amps (lol) including the '64 Princeton HW and '57 Deluxe HW models, also great amps in their own right. Comparatively, the '62 Princeton has a really unique voicing. Very mid focused, warm, "woody" tone, and packs a punch for 12 watts. The trem is excellent, I love keeping it barely on, adds an additional harmonic richness to the amp for sure.

I did upgrade the tubes to NOS RCA's and had it re-biased properly (my amp tech said it was biased pretty cold from the factory), it took a really good stock amp to a great amp. Takes pedals very well (love the King of Tone through this amp) and really pops in a mix due to the mid forward voicing.

Sweetwater is always excellent to work with as is Aric Brenner.

If you have any hesitations, I can say from experience, this amp is one of the best from Fender and very unique. I greatly respect Chis Stapleton's abilities, but am not a die hard fan by any means, I sure am glad he got this one into production with Fender though! An excellent amp for sure and should last a lifetime! I am not parting with mine.

Amazing Amp

A few years ago I looked for this amp at a local store, but they didn't know when they would have any in stock. I purchased a 57 Tweed Deluxe thinking that was the sound I was going after. The problem was that amp was so loud that I couldn't practice with it or use it in the small venue I was playing at. I sold that amp and a year later finally purchased the 62 Princeton Chris Stapleton Edition through Sweetwater. Right off don't expect to get black-face Fender tones from this amp. The sound is rich and focused in the mid-range, but the volume is easily controlled for practicing in a quiet home. It does have the capability to get pretty loud with a band. Don't let those 12 watts fool you.

I did a recording session with this amp and was blown away. I used a Fender Ultra Stratocaster with my pedal board going through the amp. A Boss Blues Driver allowed me to get a bit more chime at the threshold of distortion. I was getting tones ranging from a Strat going through a black-faced Fender amp to that classic Fender tweed Bassman tone when the gain was pushed. These were at volume levels with the amp set on 4!

If I need a brighter sound, I'll probably use a different amp. This amp, however, is now my primary amp for gigs and recording sessions. Love it.

I did one mod

It's a great amp. Exactly what I was looking for. It's got that authentic, boxy, rockabilly tone. I'm using it in my country/rockabilly band a couple times a month. Plenty loud for a club of about 150-200 dancers. It's mic'd, but I almost wish it wasn't so I could turn it up a little more. It's usually set on 3, so it's still in the clean range. I actually use a little overdrive on it. I have a Marshall 1974X 1 x 12-inch 18-watt Tube Combo Amp. Comparing the two, the Marshall breaks up earlier, even with more power. If I ever get back into a blues band I would use both amps and A/B them. I also use a UA reverb. The only thing I didn't like so much was the speaker. I swapped the CS speaker out with a Celestion Blue. I like the tone better, still pretty clean though. Overall this is a high quality, well made, great sounding amp. It's the smallest amp I've ever had in terms of power and I was a little nervous of that at first, but my fears have been allayed. It's amazing.
Music background: Professional. 3-4 gigs a month

Superb Amplifier

This amplifier is is all I was anticipating - and then even more. It's "tight" and rich-sounding. A very simple amp, with the few features that are important to me. Over the many years I've had (and still have) Fender amps (only Fender), and I've never had reason to vary from Fender. This is the crowning one of all. I start off in the morning with it, and through the day I get to take note of the steady, rich sound it produces. Basic settings on my Telecaster, and basic settings on the Singleton Princeton - and it's all very good for me. It's a fine combination of 'not more could I ask for', and 'not more am I able to produce', and I'm musically-set... for the rest of my musical life. For me, there's no where better (and no where else) to go. This amplifier costs a bit, but I have no regrets in having purchased it. Some will want more amplifier FEATURES and controls, but not will a finer amplifier be found to produce basic, rich amplified guitar music. (And Ed Nystrom at at Sweetwater is such an excellent Sweetwater sales representative.)

I just got one.

I really love this little amp! I didn't know how much I could use great tremolo.Creamy.

It’s impossible to imagine a world without Fender guitars, and if you’re like many of the guitarists at Sweetwater, then Fender not only made the first guitar you ever bought " they made the last one too! From building the first mass-produced solidbody electric guitars and basses in the 1950s to creating some of the most influential amplifier designs in history, it’s no wonder why Fender is one of the biggest names in the business. As one of the world’s largest Fender dealers, we have countless guitars, basses, amps, effects pedals, and accessories in stock and ready to ship, whenever you need them. We’re always getting our hands on their latest creations, and there’s nothing we love more than to tell our customers all about them!
