Classic Ampeg Tube Tone

The PF-20T Portaflex 20-watt bass amplifier head puts the iconic tones of all-tube Ampeg amplifiers in a compact package, ideal for rehearsal, small gigs, and recording. You'll find a set of 12AX7 and 6V6 tubes powering the amplifier, which conjures the warm tube sound associated with vintage Ampeg. Weighing in around 15 lbs., the small size and light weight make transporting the PF-20T a piece of cake. And since it doesn't require a speaker load to run, this amp easily gets those tube tones on your recorded tracks without having a cab connected. Get vintage Ampeg tube tone in a lightweight package with the PF-20T.

Ampeg PF-20T Portaflex 20-watt Tube Bass Amplifier Head at a Glance:
  • All-tube Ampeg tone
  • Huge sound, convenient size
  • A great recording tool for players of all styles
All-tube Ampeg tone

Inside of the PF-20T Portaflex bass head, you'll find a set of glowing 6V6 and 12AX7 tubes. The tube design of this amplifier allows you to get that warm, harmonically rich tone Ampeg is known for, or push it hard to get an overdriven tube growl. So whether your ideal Ampeg tone is bringing Motown thump, or grabbing a pick and punching the front end of your amplifier as hard as you can, you'll fall in love with the tones in the Ampeg PF-20T Portaflex.

Huge sound, convenient size

Even with the diminutive size of the PF-20T Portaflex amp, you have all you need for getting huge tones through your cabinet, on your tracks, or both at the same time. The straightforward front panel makes dialing in your tones a snap, while the back panel offers XLR outputs for preamp out (with pre/post EQ switch) and transformer-balanced line-out. Its smaller footprint is easy to transport, and it sits beautifully on a recording desk or affixes to current Ampeg Flip-top cabinets. And the whole tube package is less than 16 lbs.

A great recording tool for players of all styles

One of the most useful features of the PF-20T Portaflex bass amp is its ability to run without a speaker load. Combing this with the preamp out (with pre/post EQ switch) and transformer-balanced line-out, you can optimize the PF-20T as a desktop unit for running direct and sending your tube tone straight to your recording rig. The smaller size allows it to sit right on your studio desk within easy reach, and the black metal casing and glowing tubes look cool and classy.

Ampeg PF-20T Portaflex 20-watt Tube Bass Amplifier Head Features:
  • 20-watt tube bass amplifier head for small performance or recording
  • 6V6 and 12AX7 tubes offer classic Ampeg tone
  • Affixes to current Ampeg Flip-top cabinets
  • Small footprint and lighter weight make transportation easy
  • Features for direct recording
  • User adjustable bias control
  • 3-band EQ
Get Ampeg's tube tone the easy way with the PF-20T Portaflex amplifier.

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

The modern B-15 for the modern studio

If you don't have an original B-15, or don't want to spend $$$$ for one (and then have to maintain it) this is the better option. Using it with the PF-115HE cabinet. Classic Ampeg sound with a mic on it, or it has a direct out from the output transformer in addition to the D.I. from preamp out. Lots of options. I don't think I would take this out on a gig (that's what SVTs are for!) but it's the perfect amp for studio use.

Great for use as a bass DI into a DAW

I purchased the Ampeg primarily to use as DI into my DAW. The pre-EA balanced line output produces produces your bass with only a 12AX7 in the circuit. Your bass tone control is the option. Engaging the post EQ brings the EQ tone into the loop as well as the gain control and volume. The transformer DI output adds the power section into the circuit. While the transformer power out gets you close to the sound of a B15 miked up cab, I prefer the post EQ output for tracking. Did compare the unit ito the REDDi. Both have similar low noise floors with the difference being the specific frequencies present in the very low floor. The Ampeg has more tube character if that is what you are going for. Solidly built. Worth a serious look if you are needing a bass DI for recording. BTW - the Mesa Walkabout scout live rig in the picture is just a stand for the Ampeg! Have not tried to connect to the cabinet....yet

Tone for guitar!

The Ampeg twenty watt all-tube bass head, makes a great tube guitar amp. In my opinion.

Coffee Shop/Recording Amp Rig

Got this little beauty and paired it with the 210 flip-top cab. Don't let low 20-watt power leave you thinking this just a practice amp. It's got lots of thump and a pristine line out to FOH or a FRFR if you require extra oomph. Simple no-frills tone stack very easy to dial in a great sound. Solid, reliable a a really cool retro vibe. Very worthy effort Ampeg!

Old school

Very nice head..I push a modern single 15 cab or an elf 10. Mia and mim sound rich. My am.P Pro 2 with ti flats sounds fat and clear. This amp was recommended by a producer friend. As usual Sweetwater made for a stress free purchase.
Music background: Lifetime player
