Better than expected!

I love PDP and have come to expect a certain level of quality. I was on the fence about buying this set because I read a bad review but I had enough faith in my previous experience with PDP and I'm glad I did! This is a great set and I couldn't be happier.

Declining Quality

I guess we're now in that stage of this product's life-cycle now where we the consumers' familiarity, and trust in it are being used against us. I bought this particular drum kit for my church, and since I personally own two PDP Concept Maple series drum kits that I absolutely love, I saw no reason to not go with what I'm familiar with for a new church kit. I'm aware that PDP is merely a subsidiary branch of DW, so I don't expect the most top-notch qualify, but my two personal kits, which are older models blow this one out of the water. Here are some issues I've come across.

* Bass Drum Hoops: The bass drum hoops did not sit flush on the drum while installing the heads. Only after the tension rods had been tightened did I finally get the hoops flush, which meant I had to tighten said tension rods significantly tighter than I normally would have. I suppose it's possible the hoops became warped while in transit, but I can't help but feel it's also just the manufacturer cutting corners.

* Muffling Pillows: This one isn't an issue with the drums themselves, but with the muffling pillows for the bass drum that are provided with the kit. While it is nice that these are standardly provided with purchase of one of their drum kits, again I see the manufacturer cutting corners. Since this particular kit's bass drum is 24" in diameter, I knew just one set of these pillows wasn't going to dampen the drum enough to my liking, so I purchased another set from my local drum shop. This second set, however was DW brand, which I applied to the inside of the drum on the bottom, and applied the PDP pillows that came with the kit on the top part of the inside. For those that are not aware, these pillows come with a velcro strip with adhesive on one side which is meant to be stuck to the interior of the drum to hold the pillow in place. While the DW pillows held firm, the PDP pillows did not fair so well, as the velcro strips actually separated from the adhesive, which stayed stuck to the interior of the shell. Fortunately, I happened to have some spare velcro strips on me in my drum toolbox, so I was able to fix this issue fairly easily, but again, manufacturer cutting corners.

* Tension Rods: I'm sure by now, just about everyone is familiar with the concept of finger-tightening your tension rods before using your drum key to do the rest, but I also like to take it a step further by pressing down on the rim by the tension rods, and finger-tightening them even more before eventually bringing out the drum key. Well, I wasn't able to do that with these drums. I'm not sure if it has something to do with the part of the lug that the rod screws into, or the rods themselves, but these rods were so stiff, you'd think the threading wasn't lined up correctly.

* Finishes: Maybe I'm just being a little petty at this point, but I paid a significant amount of money for this, so I'd say I've earned the right. The options for finishes on these drums STINK, this series used to have some GORGEOUS finishes. Now, they're some of the most uninspiring eyesores I've ever seen. The Satin Black, which is what this particular kit is isn't bad, but it should be illegal to make a satin kit in any other color. Seriously, satin olive? Seafoam? PEWTER?? Who wants that? The few lacquer finishes there are aren't too bad either, but nothing like the finishes on the older models. And don't get me started on the sparkle finishes. Yuck, no thanks. These drums just look cheap now.

Overall, I'm sure once this kit is tuned up, and dialed in with the Evans heads that are now on it, it'll sound pretty good, which is the only thing keeping me from giving it 1 star. It hurts me to write this review, I've been such a big fan of this line of drums, and now I can't in good conscience recommend anyone buy these. The quality in construction, and in presentation has drastically deteriorated since this line was introduced. Maybe some day, DW will release another PDP line that will suck us all back in, and the circle of life will continue, but until that time, I recommend you pass on these, and just try to find an older, used model.
