Expressive Synthesis for the 21st Century

After 10 years of painstaking research, Expressive E has emerged with a voltaic blend of historic craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology to revolutionize your approach to keyboard synthesis. Osmose is a 49-key synthesizer whose highly versatile sound engine is fueled by the powerful EaganMatrix, a digital modular engine developed by Haken Audio. Over 500 diverse presets, dazzling onboard effects, and deep editing features barely scratch the surface. What makes the Osmose such a hallmark of synthesizer engineering, however, is its uncompromising approach to total polyphonic aftertouch, enabling three-dimensional control of each key across multiple axes. You can even apply these via comprehensive MIDI controls for MPE use with your DAW or device of choice, and Sweetwater’s synthesists couldn’t be more excited to take these compositional possibilities to their outer limits.

Three dimensions of play

Unlike other MPE-capable keybeds, Osmose retains the standard action and feel of a conventional MIDI controller or keyboard. MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) is a MIDI protocol that gives notes independent channels, making it possible to apply pitch bend, modulation, or other expressive control messages to each individual note. Each key has an extended range of motion from its usual resting point, allowing for continued expression through an assigned value. The same applies to each key’s Y-axis, allowing for additional per-note modulation whose range and target parameters can be modified with each patch and sound. Aftertouch sensitivity profiles and response curves can be customized for later use, with each of the advanced EganMatrix onboard sounds tailored for use with the unique expressive controls of the Osmose. Plus, the keyboard can be used as an MPE MIDI controller, armed with Multichannel MIDI that will take any sound to a new dimension of play, onboard or otherwise.

Per-key expression via extended Z-axis.

Sonic architecture from Haken Audio

Known for its early innovations in multichannel expression with its Continuum Fingerboard, Haken Audio was the perfect partner to bring three-dimensional aftertouch to a new generation of synthesizers. Expressive E’s partnership integrates Haken Audio’s innovative EaganMatrix into the unique workflow of Osmose’s flexible keybed, loaded with more than 500 presets out of the box, with plenty of room to expand. The EaganMatrix digital modular engine perfectly manages the polyphonic aftertouch with each preset crafted to make full use of its unique expression curves and modulation parameters, covering numerous categories of FM synthesis, physical modeling, and more.

Unbridled control

Osmose’s sleek, minimalistic aesthetics are a welcome contrast to its immense sonic prowess. Its controls comprise a handful of ergonomically designed and arranged backlit buttons and textured, clickable knobs. These orbit a vivid, full-color LCD screen, while pitch and modulation sliders are comfortably placed nearby. Its streamlined layout affords deep, uncompromising navigation and editing of each patch, including effects, keybed sensitivity, velocity curves, expressivity, and envelope/EQ values, all with plenty of room to save your presets for later. Osmose also has two ports for continuous pedal use, assignable to sustain or whatever synth parameter you choose, adding another dimension of expression through all 24 voices.

Deep integration

Armed with DIN MIDI in, out, and thru ports, Osmose is an extremely capable controller. Take its uncompromising, multidimensional control to your preferred DAW. Multichannel MIDI lets you explore your favorite sounds like never before. Two 1/4-inch TS pseudo-balanced line outputs handle full stereo playback, while a 1/4-inch TRS headphone jack is front-mounted for convenient solo play with its own volume adjustment. Thoughtful design includes a lockable connector for the external power supply, too! While Osmose is an incredibly capable synth with a near-limitless depth of onboard control, the accompanying EaganMatrix editing software from Haken Audio allows you to dive even further into the uncharted depths of its unique synthesis architecture, creating and fine-tuning sounds to perfectly match your output.

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!

Reviews

First hardware synth
Got endless number if software synths. Originally bought it for the controller but it turned to be pretty capable as a synth.
Music background: Piano
Can’t be beat for expressivity.
I haven't tried working with the software yet to patch it, and without the software the synth parameters available are very limited. Usually either of these two things on their own would put me off an instrument, let alone show up together. But this is a whole new world of playing.

I'm not an especially good keyboard player, but I find I'm better on the Osmose than any of my other synths. They keys feel different, and I first I wasn't sure if I liked them. But they're solid, the matte feel gives you a little more grip, and the depth of play with the aftertouch makes for a smooth and consistent experience. Much easier to pull off a smooth filter opening or what have you.

And the patches are mostly quite usable, and some of them are absolutely stellar. I'm sure programming it is going to be a huge pain in the rear, but I think this instrument will be with me for a very long time to come.
And now for something Completely Different...
I found playing and programing this instrument challenging at first. Just give it a minute.

Playing is intuitive and unique. Each patch invites a different tactile experience. You'll learn/create new playing techniques.

Editing the sounds from the screen is simple and versatile, but it is unpredictable if coming from OSCs, Filters, and ADSRs. Using the PC software for sound editing is not intuitive or familiar, but clearly powerful. Be ready to learn many new things.

I find the build quality to be solid for studio use. I do not like the design of the power supply, don't bump it.

I recommend this for those who want to play/perform with MPE and explore a new sound/patching paradigm. Sound designers and composers should also consider the Osmose.
Music background: Performer, Composer, Producer, Pro-sumer
The biggest leap forward in synths in many years
The Osmose is absolutely incredible. I've been playing on mine for 4 months now and every time I sit down with a new patch it's like I'm picking up a whole new instrument. While not the most versatile synth out there, the physical modeling paired with the added expressiveness create some breathtaking performances that I haven't seen matched anywhere else. Seeing the multiple layers of expressive control here gets me excited to see where the world of keyboards will end up in the next 10 years.
Incredible! There is nothing like it
I'm a classically trained pianist and have gotten used to synthesizers being something which requires a significant bit of work before / after a performance to dial in a sound. Not so with the Osmose. The amount of expressivity possible with the patches on this incredible instrument is truly on par with any acoustic instrument. There's really nothing quite like this, at least not without diving deeper into more esoteric products utilizing the eaganmatrix modular synthesizer.

Now, is this the perfect product for everyone? Probably not, if you want a synth you can play around with to easily create new sounds. The EaganMatrix synthesizer seems to be equal parts audio engineering and black magic, and the complexity of creating a new sound is on par with the complexity of creating a new software or acoustic instrument from scratch. While this is an area I think is ripe for disruption in the future, possibly using AI to handle the enormous complexity in setting up the character of instruments in response to the enormous amount of data captured by the Osmose keyboard, it is currently not practical for non-experts to create new sounds that'll leverage the full capabilities of the underlying sound engine.

Does that mean the Osmose is not a good investment? Absolutely not! It's incredible! The MPE capability means that with newer soft synths you can get a level of expressivity and modulation comparable to the internal Haken engine / eaganmatrix synthesizer. Additionally, the built in sounds have so much expressive potential that I do not for see them getting old anytime soon, the same way that a piano sounds like a piano but it's still widely used in music.

This truly is the first synthesizer I've ever played on where I felt I was capable of expressing as much intonation and detail as I could on an acoustic grand piano. Nothing else has come close. Read about the internals of the sound engine. It's capturing an enormous amount of data about the exact way the keys are pressed in order to give this level of responsiveness. Simply amazing.

My only wish is it had more keys. Make a 61 or 88 key version please!

I do hope this serves as inspiration for future synth designers to build on the underlying sound engine and provide higher level abstractions that mere mortals can use to create new sounds. For now, I'm very happy I bought this and will be spending many enjoyable hours playing it. :)
Music background: Classically trained pianist. Amateur producer on and off.
