A Legendary Overdrive Updated for the Modern Player

Forget your run-of-the-mill "klone": Jackson Audio's Optimist Classic takes the tone and transparency of a certain mythical overdrive pedal to unprecedented new sonic territory! Designed in collaboration with Grammy-nominated guitarist Cory Wong, the Optimist retains the volume, tone, and gain controls of the original, with Jackson Audio putting their own spin on the design with several welcome features. Two unique EQ modes arm you with natural-sounding (OD 1) and flat-response (OD 2) overdrives, with your choice of independent or joint operation. A standard 3-band EQ fine-tunes everything to taste, with all functions controllable via MIDI for endless tonal exploration. Best of all, you don't need to dish out thousands of hard-earned dollars to make it yours — add the Jackson Audio Optimist Classic Overdrive Pedal to your arsenal and capture the sound of a legendary pedal!

Two EQ modes for experimentation

Rather than stick with solely the standard "klone" settings, Jackson Audio gave the Optimist its own flavor, headlined by a pair of EQ modes not found in comparable pedals. The first mode, dubbed OD 1, channels the sound of this pedal's inspiration, complete with that one-of-a-kind midrange bump and unmatched transparency. Flip on over to OD 2, and you'll instantly jack into a flat-range overdrive. Though each mode can be used independently, Sweetwater guitarists find that using them together boosts your signal without any of the squeals and shrieks that would otherwise mar your stellar tone.

Highly responsive 3-band EQ for single-coil action

Though an undeniable ode to one of music history's most famous (or even infamous) pieces of gear, the Optimist's offerings extend far beyond its 3-knob counterpart. Jackson Audio and Cory Wong decided on a simple 3-band EQ with +/-12dB boost and cut for tone shaping. Based on the coveted Baxandall EQ, this seemingly simple equalizer accents frequencies commonly associated with single-coil pickups rather than humbuckers, bringing out more of that sparkle and shine. And since this EQ is tailor-made for guitarists, you can easily tackle shrill highs and muddy lows while dialing in that perfect clean sound.

The definition of versatility

"The Optimist is the most versatile overdrive pedal I've ever used. My goal was to design a pedal that could give me the full range of drive levels for punchy rhythm to soaring lead guitar lines. I knew that Jackson Audio was the place to land for this pedal." — Cory Wong

A Very Versatile Overdrive Pedal

I own most of the Jackson Audio overdrive pedals. The Optimist has quickly become one of my favorites. The reason is that it's obviously a bit more mature than the rest. Not that the other ones are bad or anything, but you can tell that on this one, they designed it thinking about what they've learned from the previous models.

It's very versatile and sounds great. There's a lot in this box and the MIDI functionality to me is very important. It looks great too. Jackson Audio obviously improved on this one by making the ink much thicker and much more durable. Some people have complained that the print on the Golden Boy for example, comes off too easily. Mine has been fine.

Note that if you engage both sides at the same time the volume goes up quite a bit. This is like other overdrives, for example, the Browne Protein… because the idea is that you would engage both when you need a volume boost for soloing or for a heavier rhythm that needs to jump in front of the live mix.

If there are two improvements I would make to The Optimist it would be: 1. Channel two is brighter than I would like. I run the tone knob almost all the way rolled off. That said, I don't have to run it this rolled back on all guitars… and some people like bright pedals, so I can't fault it for that. 2. Like all Jackson Audio overdrive pedals with MIDI, the effect engages on the upstroke or switch release of the switch press. This is different from most other pedals that engage on the press or downstroke. This causes a very slight delay in the effect coming on. This can be problematic for some if you are going from a clean passage to a distorted passage without a rest or pause. When you operate the pedal with MIDI this does not happen and it's instantaneous. I will not ding the pedal for this as this is how it was designed in order to allow for the various functions of the foot switches, since they do more than just turn the effect on and off. It's like this on all Jackson Audio overdrive pedals.

All the overdrive I need

So far, this pedal has been able to replace both of my previous gain/overdrive pedals. I use the OD-1 for lower gain parts and OD-2 for most of my lead parts. Stacking them is great and it takes a pre-gain boost really well. I use it along with an ACS1 and I love the resulting tone.

Optimist pedal

Amazing open sounding amp like pedal. Percussive pick attack. Great for crunch tones! I've been impressed with all Jackson pedals. I now have 3 on my board! This pedal is a great addition after the Golden Boy.

3 Pedals in 1

This thing has replaced two drive pedals on my current board. The versatility that it offers in one package is quite remarkable: Klon + Volume boost? Klon + more dirt? Driven Klon into driven tube screamer? I am probably not even coming close to the amount of stacking drive opportunities in this one box.

You get all this and I didn't even mention the added EQ.
