The Austrian Audio Revolution, Redux

Handcrafted in Vienna, the City of Music, the Austrian Audio OC-S10 is a reference-grade large-diaphragm condenser microphone that is fastidiously designed for recording lead vocals and solo instruments with unprecedented precision. With its pristine sonics, five selectable polar patterns, two highpass filters, and switchable 10dB and 20dB pads, the OC-S10 would be a high-performance conventional LDC in anyone’s book. But conventional it’s not: while plugging an XLR cable into the mic's main output enables normal operation, plugging an additional XLR cable into the second output allows you to record the rear capsule signal separately. Moreover, you can use the dual outputs in conjunction with Austrian Audio’s groundbreaking plug-in suite, allowing you to craft custom polar patterns after recording to achieve your absolute sound. The OC-S10 ships as a complete package with a custom shockmount featuring a unique ball joint connection for exacting mic placement on any source. In addition, the included magnetic metal-mesh pop filter effectively reduces plosives that can mar a perfectly good vocal take while maintaining the full richness and detail of a singer’s range. With all this going for it, we think you’ll agree that the Austrian Audio OC-S10 is no ordinary mic. Put it to work on your next project, and you’ll be convinced!

Dual mode and Austrian Audio’s plug-in suite

Austrian Audio’s plug-in suite, consisting of PolarDesigner, StereoCreator, and AmbiCreator, works together with the OC-S10’s dual outputs to let you create custom polar patterns, soundstaging, and ambience after recording. In Dual Mode, the OC-S10’s front and rear capsule membranes are output independently, so you can record them on separate tracks and use, for instance, the PolarDesigner plug-in to subsequently modify the polar pattern in post production. PolarDesigner even lets you independently choose the polar pattern for up to five different frequency bands. Imagine how a pair of room mics with a tight supercardioid pickup in the low frequencies, figure-8 for the mids, and omnidirectional for the highs would sound on a drum kit in a great-sounding room! Or, for that matter, how would the lead vocal sound in stereo? The StereoCreator plug-in can make that happen. And as its name would suggest, AmbiCreator is handy for creating atmospheres around lackluster sources that need a bit of sprucing up.

Outstanding results on any source

The heart of any classic mic is a superior handmade capsule, and this wisdom is borne out in the Austrian Audio’s proprietary CKR12 capsule. In keeping with its multipattern design specification, the OC-S10 uses a dual-diaphragm version, which — in concert with the microphone’s custom circuitry — delivers excellent results when used for vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, drum overheads, strings, brass, percussion, and room capture. What’s more, the OC-S10’s robust native 147dB maximum SPL capability — further increased by the inclusion of selectable 10dB and 20dB pads — also makes it ideal for louder sources such as tom toms and electric guitar cabinets.

Austrian Audio: the new Vienna classics

Carrying on the rich legacy of high-end Viennese microphone design into the modern era, Austrian Audio is driven by an engineering team with over 300 years of combined experience. Their motto: “Making Passion Heard.” Their mission: to design and manufacture a new generation of recording tools that embrace cutting-edge technologies and sonic excellence while honoring Vienna’s rich musical heritage. That vision is realized in Austrian Audio’s proprietary handcrafted CKR12 large-diaphragm capsule, which is used in the company’s excellent OC18 and OC818 condenser microphones. Sweetwater is proud to bring you Austrian Audio’s distinguished lineup of fine musical instruments.

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!

A Truly Exceptional Microphone

The OCS-10 is one of the best microphones I have worked with - ever. I work in a studio where I have access to almost every "industry standard" microphone there is, and yet I consistently find myself reaching for the OCS-10. It sounds incredible on nearly everything from vocals, to guitar, to piano. It is a fairly neutral microphone yet is has a very slight boost in the HF which I find sounds very nice

The dual capsule design is also very cool. Austrian Audio is not the first to implement this but they have done it very well here. Using the included plugin, you can change the polar pattern after the fact using some software trickery and the recordings from both capsules. You can also make psuedo-stereo recordings using the 2 capsules as different audio tracks for L/R. The included pop filter is also great to use. It is made of a metal mesh that is very solid and yet fully acoustically transparent. It also attaches quicker than any pop filter I have used before since it uses a series of magnets that attach to the included shock mount. The magnets also place the pop filter at the ideal distance from the microphone every time.

The build quality and packaging are superb. The microphone is full metal and uses hall effect mechanisms which means that the switching rings on the mic will never deteriorate. The mic also doesn't rely on a processor to retain its settings (unlike the newer C414s that forget all of your settings the moment that phantom power is turned off). The included case is very well build being almost fully metal and providing a very secure grip on everything.

I only really have one negative to say about the microphone - and this is really nitpicking. The included shock mount is extremely well made being full metal but screwing it in can sound like scratching metal since it's a metal mount screwing into a metal mic. However, after a month of use, this has caused no damage to either the mic or shock mount, and it does do a fantastic job at holding the mic securely even when you have it in weird orientations.

It's hard to say that a microphone is worth $, but this might be the first microphone that makes it feel justifiable. Needless to say, Austrian Audio has made an incredible microphone that really distinguishes itself in the market. Having access to all of these mics, I would choose the OCS-10 over those on almost any occasion, unless someone specifically requests another. The sound out of the box is incredible, and with the polar pattern selection, included plugins, and dual capsules, I can pretty much achieve the sound I am looking for - no matter the source.

Great Mic Produces Gorgeous Results - Move Over U87
First let me say I am a big fan of Austrian Audio. These folks are the former braintrust of AKG Vienna and they are a forward thinking company building new products while still holding true to AKG tradition. I have been using OC818 and CC8 in my studio since they first hit the street. They are incredible mics that produce fantastic results and I highly recommend them. As for the OCS10, I was super excited when it was announced but I was also slightly hesitant because it didn't appear to be that much different than the OC818 but the price tag was doubled.

BUILD QUALITY is 10 out of 10. Top of the Line, Solid, Great Design. The Stereo capabilities and polar pattern app is pretty cool.

SOUND QUALITY is 10 out of 10. Super quiet, very detailed and very transparent. It sounds fantastic on strummed and fingerpicked acoustic guitars, mandolin and other stringed instruments also sound fantastic. On vocals, the OCS10 is SUPER SMOOTH ! The top end air is more natural than the OC818 and my now former Neumann TLM 103 and Gefell MT71S. I run the mic through either a UA610 Tube Pre or a Focusrite ISA Two... both produce gorgeous results. Definitely on par with the U87.

BANG FOR THE BUCK: Here is where things get muddy. I don't believe one has to own high dollar flagship mics to make great recordings. If you're in business and want to impress clients then YES buy big name, big dollar gear including the OCS10. If you are a serious project / home studio person (like me) and can afford to splurge for a top flight mic then YES buy the OCS10 it sounds just as good if not better than the U87's I have experienced. Lastly, if your budget would be pushed to the max buying an OCS10 or U87....don't do it..the OC818 is a masterpiece of design and sound as were the mics I previously referenced..I also love the AEA R84A Ribbon Mic.... it is fantastic

Move over U87ai
This mic should replace the U87ai for voice over and general use since it has a hypercardioid pattern, 4 dBA better self noise in cardioid mode, and 20 dBA better Max SPL. Plus, switchable pad and HPF. Oh, and it sounds great and comes with a pop filter.
