Studio Condenser Mic Quality for Your Live Vocals

Handheld condenser vocal microphones have come a long way in the last several years, and the Austrian Audio OC707 is a perfect example. Its advanced engineering ensures that you won’t have to settle for anything less than studio-quality sound for your live vocal performances. The OC707 is a true-condenser design featuring a handcrafted OCC7 open condenser capsule that’s custom tuned for optimum performance in capturing vocals. Featuring Austrian Audio’s proprietary Open Acoustics Technology, the OC707 delivers excellent handling along with superior noise suppression and feedback rejection. Superbly engineered and manufactured in Austria, the Austrian Audio OC707 captures every nuance of your vocal performances with breathtaking clarity and precision.

Versatility for any live or studio scenario

While some handheld microphones are fitted with an on-off switch that can come in handy during live performances, the OC707 is packing something rather unique for the category: a switchable highpass filter. Although the OC707 is engineered for minimized near-field bass buildup (proximity effect), the onboard second-order filter provides even more versatility for live sound and studio recording scenarios by attenuating low frequencies below 120Hz. With its versatile cardioid polar pattern, the OC707 feels natural and comfortable in handheld operation, and its body is engineered for maximum suppression of vibration-borne noise when placed on a mic stand. All in all, the Austrian Audio OC707 is a star performer, whether onstage or in the studio!

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items

Reviews

Stunning microphone
This is my second mic and I must say it is absolutely amazing! The sound is crisp and clear, true to what you want to deliver. The build seems strong, has a good grip, and beautiful aesthetics. Loving it so far!
Transparent
No coloring of tone here. A solid feeling mic that makes the sound source sound just like the sound source sounds. If you're expecting something to add a hi end sparkle, look elsewhere. I'd compare this to the AKG C5 but with greater fullness of tone.

Great Condenser Mic for Live Vocals
The OC707 is at least as good as condenser mics costing much more. Male vocals/rock band- spent a good deal of time experimenting (EQ-ing, RTA, different mics, different voices) with some high-end condenser mics with the guys in the band. The OC707 is my choice because it's very clear and very well balanced...cuts through the mix well in a 6 piece band with 5 other vocal mics. It has a fairly tight pickup pattern, which suits my close-up mic technique and also does a great job of eliminating feedback from all the other mics/instruments on stage. Looks good too...seems rugged (pretty heavy) and well built. I'm surprised these mics aren't more common given the good performance for the money they offer.
Extremely poor plosive rejection, unreliable.
I purchased my OC707 locally, so this is no criticism of Sweetwater. In initial testing I noticed that this microphone is extremely sensitive to plosives. This was an issue during live performance, too, and I had to modify my technique to try to control it. I have other condenser stage mics, such as the Audio Technical AE5400 and the Audix VX5 that do not suffer this problem at all. I also noticed that if I touched the lower basket, the microphone would hum. This problem persisted regardless of the XLR cable or the mixing desk I used. I decided that I could avoid touching the grill for the time being and took it to a show. During the show, on several occasions the microphone made a loud thunderous noise. Needless to say, I had to swap out the microphone to complete the show. I don't believe this was caused by condensation, as it was a warm night indoors.

After experiencing the technical issues with the microphone, I returned it to the authorized dealer for repair. Six weeks later, I was still waiting for repair. Eventually, the dealer said that they could not tell me when the mic might be repaired and offered me a refund, which I accepted. I was happy with a refund, as The sound signature of this mic doesn't quite have the air I want from a condenser Its main presence peak is centred at around 4K, which I'm sure suits some vocalists, but didn't really work for my voice or offer the sound I wanted.

I will say that I really like the design of the microphone, but for me, that was really the only thing I liked.
