Epiphone’s 1961 Classic Returns

Epiphone is throwing it back in time with the Newport Bass Guitar — back to 1961 to be exact. After all, that’s when the first all-original Newports hit the shelves. This marvelous modern model pays tribute to the rare vintage model that started it all. Its unique body shape sends out waves of vintage appeal while also making for a comfortable playing experience. This rockin’ Newport sports a body and neck constructed from mahogany that’s full of warmth and sustain. The electronics situated on the Newport comprise two humbuckers that output plenty of rich tones and a set of knobs to control volume, tone, and blend. The musical bottom line? You’ll turn heads with an Epiphone Newport bass.

Classic meets contemporary appeal

The Epiphone Newport starts off strong with a tonewood collection including warm and organic mahogany for the body and neck plus an Indian Laurel fingerboard. The 30.5-inch scale length and medium “C” profile on the Newport facilitate easy fretting for hands of all sizes. And no fret will escape you, thanks to the Newport’s symmetrical double-cutaway body that offers unfettered access to the highest frets. The finishing vintage touches on this modern model include a Historic Bass Tune-o-matic bridge and Historic Claw tailpiece that keep plenty of resonance in the body. The Newport shines with vintage appeal while still offering playability that can meet the needs of today’s bassists.

Modern-day tonal complexity

You’ll find plenty of tone combinations to love packed away in the Epiphone Newport Bass. Take a listen to the Bass Sidewinder in the neck position and you’ll be treated to that thick, vintage tone of years past. Conversely, the TB PRO in the bridge position offers a mix of brighter timbres. Unlike the one-pickup Newport iterations that came before, this Newport model delivers more tonal complexity than its vintage brethren. If you want a Newport model but can’t afford an original from the '60s, then Sweetwater recommends the Newport that rocks in the modern age.

Epiphone Newport Electric Bass Guitar:

  • A modern design of an Epiphone classic from 1961
  • Mahogany body and neck offer plenty of warmth and sustain
  • 30.5-inch scale and medium "C" neck profile feels comfortable in many hand sizes
  • Double-cutaway body makes frets accessible and has comfortable curves
  • Historic Bass Tune-o-matic bridge and Historic Claw tailpiece that keep plenty of resonance in the body
  • Bass Sidewinder in the neck and TB PRO in the bridge offer thick vintage tone and bright timbres
  • Volume, tone, and blend knobs to create your desired tones

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Epiphone Newport Bass

I've been on the Rock & Roll stage since 1967, and have purchased, setup and played probably more than a hundred guitars and basses. This "Newport" Bass was purchased from Sweetwater and shipped, well packaged, in a timely manner.

It was opened and then, after 24 hours of static acclimation in the opened factory carton, I removed and inspected the bass.

This is an attractive and uncommon bass guitar design. Originally a Gibson/Epiphone built of the same benches as the Les Paul and SG. They are now made in China by "ChEpiphone". They weigh in the 7-to-8 pound range. Comfortably "lightweight".

Sadly, the neck, and it's fret job, were unplayable - and no way to "adjust" out of a Low E string fret buzz that started at the second fret and went all the way to the eleventh fret. That is with small low fret wires. The strings were tensioned and the bass was re-tuned to E-A-D-G.

String clearance came out at 2.5mm for the Nut and 3.5mm at fret 12. The bridge was already bottomed out on the "G" and raised about 1/2mm on the "E" string. The neck relief was fine - Just a mile from the strings for the full neck length. And the buzz was still there.

There is NO height adjustment for individual strings - None at all. Only the Bridge height screws on each side. The saddles are a fixed height.

A complete re-fret job by a seasoned experienced luthier might have been able to correct the buzz, but that guitar should never never been released for shipment by Sweetwater's Adjustment and Inspection Technicians. This is a first from Sweetwater - out of many otherwise prefect purchases.

Some buyers have reviewed their Newport as "plays fine - just high action". Several reviewers cited the same neck/fret problem and lack of adjustment options that I experienced. A variety of "OK" and laments from Newport buyers; we each receive different build qualities.

I had no choice but to return it - contemplating a full refund against a factory defective instrument.
Music background: Working professional. Session and stage performance. Qualified recording engineer. Fifty-five years of experience.
