What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Great Pickup, some EQ needed
This is super convenient and has no excess noise whatsoever. I did notice a large mid boost on mine (I used this on a Kremona Solea C, cedar top with standard Daddario nylon strings) so I spent a couple hours messing with EQ settings until I got a flat frequency response out of it. At that point it sounded absolutely fantastic, and I love that I no longer need a mic to amplify and record. It's very aesthetically pleasing and does no damage to your instrument whatsoever. I'll include a picture of the EQs I needed for my specific pickup to get a flat frequency response, it's possible that each is a little different. (Bottom left tube EQ is just to make it stand out, and bottom right is because A1 - 110 Hz - tends to provide feedback when amplified.)

KNA NG1 pick-up: Sweet Simplicity!
You can always hope for the best and then swallow your disappointment with any sight-unseen purchase, but the NG-1 is not that item. It is amazingly simple in design and does not interfere with your instrument's playability or its natural acoustic sound. I used it on my fret-worn Washburn Lyon Concert Soprano Ukulele and found it actually improved its tone. I put it through an Orange Mini and it sang like an angel. No pick noise--just a clear musical signal. Can't be more ecstatic--the NG-1 (the size of a petite popsicle stick) is better than any pick-up concept I have ever used. Call me completely satisfied! Chordially, MU.
Music background: Guitar player since 1974; Ukulele since 2006.
Sounds good to my ears, along with my new Fishman Artist Amp

It wasn't terribly hard to install, but besides loosening all the strings on my classical guitar, I had to use a plastic pointed tool to lift up some of the strings at the bridge because of the way strings are tied down without a ball end. They really need to make more classical strings with the ball end as choices are limited.

On a side note, I read about lowering the action by sanding down the bottom of the saddle. Before attempting that I noticed that the saddle was not in the correct spot, from installing the KNA. Without string tension it freely floats around in the slot. Mine has a curve where the strings sit, and it's lower on the high E string end and gradually gets higher towards the low E string. So I loosened the strings again and pushed it as far up as I could go before the high E string was barely hanging on the end.

Small, simple, and impressive

I wanted a better option than using a mic for my classical guitar. This thing is great! It has a warm, natural sound. Slips in under the strings and the bridge and you are set.

I plug mine into a preamp (Fishman Platinum Stage EQ/DI) which allows me to control the EQ, low frequency filter, and volume. From there into a powered speaker. I highly recommend this.

Sounds Amazing! Beyond Expectations.
I purchased this to avoid having to mic my entry level Fender CG-7 student guitar. I am running the pickup into a VOX VT 20X amp and I swear to you it sounds like I have a $5,000 set up. It is a dream tone for me. It picks up all the warm tones of the guitar, without being to boomy or tinny on the high and low ends. The amp warms the tone and a little reverb helps smooth out my playing. I played for hours the first night, finding all kinds of inspiration in the smoothness of the overall tone. I am set to record songs that I had assumed would never be recorded due to the limitations in the acoustic tone of the guitar and my not wanting to spend money on a new and better classical. Those considerations are long gone because this pickup sounds GREAT!

One thing about the installation of the pickup. Once I had loosened the strings, when I went to slide the pickup under the strings, it was still to tight to get under them, so I had to use a tool to lift the tie-offs enough to slide the pick up in. It took a little patience and delicacy, but as you can see by me review, worked fine.
