High-precision Headphones from Neumann

If you're making critical sonic decisions, you need high-precision monitoring. Neumann's NDH 30 open-back headphones arm you with just that, yielding outstanding linearity and transient response, in addition to solid stereo imaging and unparalleled resolution. Circumaural memory foam ear pads provide exceptional comfort during long listening sessions, and you get sound and mixing compatibility with calibrated Neumann KH Line studio monitors. NDH 30 headphones come with a detachable, internally balanced cable and a 1/4-inch adapter, plus they're foldable for easy transport. A top choice for producers, broadcast professionals, mixing engineers, and mastering engineers alike, NDH 30s take the physical potential of open-back headphones to an entire new level of sonic accuracy.

Designed to Neumann’s high standards

The NDH 30s incorporate state-of-the-art 1.5-inch drivers with high-gauss neodymium magnets for high sensitivity and minimal distortion, allowing you to hear the pure audio signal without coloration. Neumann made sure the mechanical construction of NDH 30 headphones meets the company’s high standards. The adjustable headband is made of flexible steel, while the earcup covers are machined from lightweight aluminum. For ease of transportation, the headphones are foldable for a snug fit in the included cloth bag. Plus, a 10-foot detachable, internally balanced cable and a 1/4-inch adapter are also included.

Perfect for mission-critical listening

At Sweetwater, we find Neumann NDH 30 headphones ideal for applications that require a high degree of precise detail, such as mixing and mastering. Thanks to their extended 12Hz–34kHz frequency response, NDH 30s are particularly helpful for checking the upper and lower extremes of the audio band. Beyond that, their unusually flat frequency response and natural stereo image allow for mixing with confidence and ensuring that your mixes will translate to all playback systems. Last but not least, NDH 30s are also excellent headphones for audiophile entertainment.

Neumann NDH 30 Open-back Studio Headphones Features:

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Get Ready For Reality

When I used the headphones and began listening to music I knew very well, I was initially shocked. My thought was that I was unhappy with how they sounded. I listened to an array of top-level albums and was disappointed at what I was hearing. I was about to give up and then had the thought ~ "let's listen to Fleetwood Mac Rumors", and album known for it's brilliant recording, mixing and mastering.

I was blown away. Listening to 'Dreams' I was shocked to hear things I had never heard before. I bought this album new when it was first released. What became quickly understood was how remarkable that album is, and and how not-so-great the other albums I've loved through the years were not-so-great.

These headphones are BRUTALLY HONEST.

That's it.

Change Is Good

The NDH 30 is my first foray into Neumann cans, after 20 years of using Sennheiser HD280 and 380 Pros. As the title says, "change is good." Beautiful, neutral sound with enough treble for fine detail without being fatiguing, and rich, tight, balanced bass. Has very slightly less raw power in the lowest sub-bass than the venerable HD380 Pros, but that's an inherent side effect of the open backs on the Neumanns. It's a worthwhile tradeoff for the massively superior detail at all levels, and much more natural soundstage. The velour covers and memory foam padding on the earcups are very cozy once they're broken in a little (it took about two days), and the gripping force on the sides of your head is firm, but not uncomfortable.

I do have a few small criticisms, but they, at least for me, were fixable. The main one is that the stock padding on the headband, while its nice and thick, is simply far too *narrow* to adequately spread out the weight for longer listening sessions. Out of the box, I found that I was getting a hotspot on my crown after about 45minutes. I removed the stock padding (its easy, there's a teardown video on YouTube if you look around), and installed a ZMF Pilot Pad. (If you want to use that model, you'll need to add an extra inch or so of double-sided Velcro to extend the top flap, as the rubber bumpers on the NDH30s make it a bit too fat. If you don't want to do that, ZMF has some other headband pads that are friendlier for chunky bands.) Once that was done, they're now comfortable enough for me to do my usual 3-6 hour sessions again without a problem.

Otherwise, what some other reviewers have said isn't wrong, these are a bit picky about how they're positioned if you want to truly nail the sweet spot, and space inside the earcups is at a premium. That last one's not an issue for me, but I could see it being trouble for those with more... well-endowed pinnae than myself. And its minor, but the locking mechanism for the removable cable is not great -- despite what the dainty little illustration in the manual indicates, you really need to HULK SMASH it into place to make full contact, which is a bit of an anxiety-inducer when you're trying to set up your cool new cans. Once its locked in, it does stay put very well, at least.

Minor complaints aside, here's the bottom line -- if you, too, have been hanging on to a set of now-discontinued HD380 Pros for ages, wondering what you should update to, I really can't recommend these enough. There's enough similarities in their general character that the switch is an easy one to make, and you gain all the benefits of a more modern, open-back design.

Worth the investment

The Neumann NDH 30s are worth the investment. The sound stage is wide and I am able to hear details across the frequency spectrum. I was using the Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pros for mixing and mastering. They are excellent. These Neumann NDH 30s are a cut above! Although the headphones deliver great performance on their own, I also use the NDH30 Sonarworks Sound ID software headphone preset to pull them in to perfection.

My Ears Have Been Opened

Wow Neumann got it perfect

This product totally lives up to its name. This will guarantee what you hear is what it will actually sound like in the real world as long as you have accurate ears. Duplicates my high end JBL monitors to a T. Every nuance and detail is presented. This headset is totally flat across the entire spectrum and you won't be over boosting or not boosting enough, bass, drums and vocals. These are worth every penny I paid. I'm an old school professional mastering engineer and I tell it like it is. Exceptionally well made like Neumann microphones. All real metal. Not plastic.
