Amazing Nylon Tone, Acoustic and Plugged In

Featuring a traditional feel and body size, the Yamaha NCX5 acoustic-electric guitar is a comfortable option for experienced classical guitarists. You'll enjoy the delightfully delicate nylon string sound, beautifully projected by its solid walnut back and sides topped with solid European spruce. One thing you won't see — but you'll definitely hear — is the NCX5's advanced internal bracing pattern, which is fine-tuned to enhance frequency response and projection. Complete with the innovative Atmosfeel pickup/preamp system that reproduces every detail of your tone, the Yamaha NCX5 nylon-string acoustic-electric guitar is a stellar performer in every respect.

All-solid tonewoods create tons of resonance

The Yamaha NCX5 is crafted with all-solid tonewoods. The most obvious reason for this design choice is to take advantage of the natural resonance of the wood. This instrument's cutaway body is made with a sitka spruce top which showcases the punchy attack it's known for. Further, walnut back and sides add warm overtones with a pleasing low-end response. Built by master craftsmen with the best wood available, you can be assured that this Yamaha acoustic is every bit the purebred classical guitar it's billed to be.

Atmosfeel electronics ensure first-rate plugged-in tone

The Yamaha NCX5 nylon-string guitar is equipped with Yamaha’s Atmosfeel pickup and preamp system. This innovative system lends a natural, three-dimensional sound to your guitar via a 3-way sensor setup. A piezo under-saddle sensor picks up sound where the strings meet the bridge, while an internal microphone captures the guitar’s internal resonance and a sheet sensor picks up vibrations from its soundboard. A Mic Blend knob enables you to blend the mic signal with the piezo. A Bass EQ knob controls a peaking EQ — the center frequency raises when boosting and lowers when attenuating. You also get a Master Volume control.

Innovative bracing pattern for sonic excellence

While you'll normally never see your guitar's internal bracing, it plays a huge role in dictating how your instrument sounds. The Yamaha NCX5's bracing pattern doesn't have a catchy name, because it's been specifically designed for this body shape, size, and tonewoods. In other words, Yamaha measured and experimented until they found the sweet spot for low-frequency response, projection, and articulation. Guitarists at Sweetwater spend a bit too much time thinking about things like internal bracing structures, and we're impressed with Yamaha's attention to this detail.

Yamaha NTC5 Acoustic-electric Nylon-string Guitar Features:

Underwhelming

From the start, Sweetwater was fantastic with great customer service, which is why I keep coming back. FedEx delivered the product later than scheduled and this has become the norm. FedExcuse is what they are called around our house. The guitar was packaged well, in it's case, double boxed with firm foam padding. We waited the recommended 24 hours before unpacking. So that the instrument could acclimate.
When I opened the soft shell case the Yamaha NCX5 comes with I was a little taken back. The instrument is gorgeous. Had to pause and just admire it in the case for a minute. Pleasantly surprised with the looks of the NCX5. I have it lined up next to my Yamaha CG-TA, Cordoba C12, Cordoba F7 in the music room and it really pops out for looks by comparison. It does draw your eye to it.
However, when I played the NCX5 without amplification I was underwhelmed, to the point of disappointment. The mid range and high range (D,G,B, high E) have almost no projection. It is like the sound hole is too small. The base also was not impressive but better. I may be spoiled by playing my Cordoba C12 daily.
I have a morning playing routine that is 3-4 hours each day and I tried the NCX5 without amplification. I could barely make it through the warmup section of my routine. I could not get any projection out of the mid range or high notes. I had to plug it into my Fishman Loudbox Mini in order to hear the NCX5 over the central air flowing through the vents, and I don't mean the A/C unit which is outside, several walls away. It is definitely at the opposite end of the spectrum compared to my Cordoba C12 that has amazing projection, but not electronic or a cutaway.
Plugged in, the NCX5 was still underwhelming. Although I have only been playing it for two days. I will adjust the onboard treble EQ on the NCX5 and the controls on the Fishman to see if I can improve the performance. The NCX5 is not the versatile instrument I was hoping it would be. I play finger style Classical and Folk/Blues with my nylon string guitars and was hoping for more from the NCX5. I like the 2" nut, even for Blues or folk. For quieter, intimate pieces and with amplification the NCX5 may work. Definitely not for ensemble or band work. You can't be heard.
Music background: Hobbyist. Beginner/Intermediate.
