Classic synth core - but not for beginners

I am writing this as a synth enthusiast and someone who has always wanted a Moog since I heard Wendy Carlos belt out the Clockwork Orange soundtrack on whatever monster she used in the day. Had a great experience getting it from Sweetwater; Mark Bruhn always takes great care of my business.

The Moog is a classic analog synth : for better or worse. What you get for your money is a solid, well-built and durable synth with strong fundamentals in terms of the waveform. The classic Moog ladder filter is here and it sounds just as delicious as you expect on the lowpass. The modulation bay gives you a taste of modular and there's plenty of strong, full synth sound to squeeze out of this machine. The square and saws are wonderfully fat, the LFO runs a surprisingly wide spectrum of speeds from tremolo stutter to near-FM level speed modulation.

And the build quality is superb. A solid, hefty metal chassis and those classy wood endpieces, yet still light enough to move around and THANK YOU MOOG for actually having the interface tilt upward, making it more comfortable for tall people like me to play without lurching over it. There's not a wobbly knob or cheap feeling part in the slightest. This is classic analog gear, the standard that Moog set. In addition, while the manual mentions that this machine, like many analog synth, can drift pitch-wise, I haven't hardly had a problem. At most I occasionally have nudge a knob to dial in my pitch and I'm golden. No noise in the line, not a pop or crackle or bad hum to speak of. This machine is well-made and I am so confident in its build quality that I will likely pass it down to my kids someday.

Now the feature-set... This is where a newer synth player might feel disappointed. While its solid sound is good, the synth's features are sorely lacking compared to digital and hybrid competitors in the same price range or cheaper (and that's not even counting Behringer, who makes several clones of Moog products that many claim sound in no way different from the real thing). Since this is analog, there's obviously no patch saving for easy recall and it's also monophonic, which feels almost insulting at this price to be honest. Synth and modular enthusiasts are used to this - but a newcomer will feel hampered.

Its envelope generator is disappointing and doesn't have a lot of range though it can get surprisingly snappy. The onboard sequencer doesn't feel intuitive, the onboard keyboard (did you like the Mavis buttons? No? Too bad!) is depressingly small (and the only "cheap" feeling hardware on the machine) and there's really not a lot of room in the patch bay. And there are zero onboard effects. My Microfreak, which was less than half the price of this when I bought it, has had four big updates, has a multitude of synth engines and is paraphonic. Search around this site and you can find other alternatives.

So why buy a Mother-32? Because this machine was designed to be part of a larger intro-to-modular system (along with the Subharmonicon and DFAM machines), it may feel like something's missing. That's because this synth was designed to be put into an existing set-up and this is one of its biggest strengths - connectivity. The onboard 5-pin midi doesn't require any dumb dongle guesswork and it plays nicely with a variety of gear. My Microfreak likes it, my grooveboxes like it, hell, I've even managed to connect on an old Wii Rock Band keyboard (and the strip even works!) and belted out synth arpeggios on that. In short, this synth is like square wave / sawtooth steroids - it will put some fundamental power and analog warmth into your synth flow. In fact, this core sound feels great when mixed with other synths and - while I can't test this - it plays well with larger modular setups too and has excellent documentation (a proper instruction book, not some brief online pdf).

I probably won't buy another Moog unless I can afford a more full-featured one; especially since Moog got bought out and laid off a lot of the staff who also had stake in the company.

Final verdict: a synth newbie will be lost on this machine and likely won't get their money's worth. I'm not sure if it's a must-have for synth enthusiasts. But you can't beat that classic Moog sound. Just be ready to make some sacrifices for it.
Music background: Electronica producer / performer, synth player

Want real Moog sound? Take it from the die-hard analog synth masters here at Sweetwater: buy a Moog. It doesn't matter which one; their synths start at top quality and only go up from there. Sweetwater's relationship with Moog goes way back, and some of us fondly remember the last time Bob himself came to visit. Over the years, we've had the honor of watching Moog grow and evolve, and with synthesis experts like Daniel Fisher on staff, we're still one of the first companies to catch wind of new Moog products - they never fail to impress! Whether it's a classic reissue, a breakthrough new keyboard, or even a cool effects pedal, you can be sure anything you get from Moog will make you happy, and we'd love to tell you all about it.
