Classic Design with Modern Capabilities

Whether you use it for rehearsal, live shows, or studio production, the TASCAM Model 16 is a great-sounding, easy-to-use multitrack recording solution. The Model 16 boasts a classic analog mixer-style design that's both intuitive and immediate. Achieve precise control with 60mm faders, while tweaking your tracks with familiar EQ and Aux controls. High-grade preamps ensure top-notch sound that's easily captured on an internal SD card at 24-bit/48kHz resolution. You also get a generous complement of I/O. Beyond that, DAW integration is a piece of cake, thanks to the Model 16's built-in 16-in/14-out audio interface. The Model 16 is lightweight yet rugged, and can be transported from studio to stage with confidence, thanks to TASCAM's legendary reliability.

Flexible routing and onboard effects

If you've ever used a small-format analog console or a classic Portastudio, you'll already be familiar with the Model 16. Take control of your mix with 60mm faders, then tweak your tracks to perfection with 3-band EQs. Shape your output with a 4-band master EQ. Achieve great sound right from the start, thanks to 10 high-grade mic preamps with +48V phantom power. You also get a full complement of I/O for integrating your instruments and outboard gear. At Sweetwater, we appreciate the Model 16's old-school approach — no menu diving necessary!

Easy standalone multitrack recording

Recording with the TASCAM Model 16 is a breeze. Capture up to 16 simultaneous tracks (channels 1–14 plus stereo master) directly to SD card at 24-bit/48kHz resolution, with the ability to overdub up to eight tracks at the same time. You also get flexible routing and onboard effects. The Model 16 offers easy standalone multitrack recording at its best.

The perfect analog front-end for your DAW

The Model 16 does way more than simply let you move recorded tracks to and from a DAW. Rather, it functions as a full-blown 16-in/14-out USB audio interface, complete with premium-quality preamps and onboard compression. And when it's time to mix, you can either work in-the-box, or route tracks back through the Model 16 for 14 channels of hands-on control and genuine analog vibe.

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!

Reviews

This is an excellent device.
This is an excellent device. People who make music should buy it right away in my opinion. Because it sounds nice. When recording music into a computer the sound is ok, but a computer does not include the internal mechinsms, components and circuitry in this device. So recording music into this unit is much better than what a computer is capable of because there would be no point in a device like this existing otherwise. This is an excellent device 10 stars

A great investment!
I bought the Tascam Model 16 for live mixing while recording and studio recording. It is a joy to use.
Great clean sound from pre-amps. Compressor, EQ, and effects all sound great. It's also analog, aside from effects and recording, and has multitrack recording.
The layout is intuitive and makes mixing and recording a breeze.
The mixer can be used for DAWless recording with punch in/out, but it also integrates well with a DAW through USB and SD card.
I haven't had any issues so far.
Overall, it is a versatile and fun to use tool.

Perfect with my MPC Live 2
I bought this mixer to use with my MPC Live 2 and my external gear. So far so good! I wont be using the internal recorder so i cant speak on that.

• The eqs are good for minor touchups
• The verb effects are good quick touches but they only have two perimeters to adjust
• The sliders and knobs feel pretty decent
• The layout is nice i love it
• Bluetooth works perfect there is zero delay
• Easily connects to MPC no problem at all!!!
• Connecting external gear to use with MPC is straight forward but does use up either two channels or one dual channel per peace of stereo gear, 1 track for mono gear. Not a big deal for my use!
• I needed more tracks than the model 12 which is why I got the 16. If i had more space i would have got the 24.

Overall this mixer is perfect for my use. Im happy i bought it! It adds a lot of fun and convenience when producing from MPC!

How to use as an interface with a Daw
When connecting to a computer to use as an interface set the switch to PC for every channel. Next open preferences in your Daw and set to the right driver ( explained in manual ) then set the first input as 1 and the last as 14 and do the same for the outputs. After that in your Daw open the routing matrix and assign each channel the correct output exe. Channel one output to channel 1 and channel 2 output to channel 2 and so on. Great sounding preamps, the compressors are transparent, and the EQs work great.

Completes My Musical Workflow!
I record all my instruments on my Korg Kronos sequencer: Bass, guitar, drums, percussions. I do all my keyboard playing live with my singing (on top of my recorded instrument tracks). That said, I needed a mixer that would record my live playing and would deliver a final track of my songs. That's where the TASCAM Model 16 came in to the scene! Before this mixer, I used a Rockville RPM 870. I was happy with the sound but I was limited in tracks and I had no way to record on it. The flash drive recorder on the Rockville was garbage. horrible sound. That's when I decided to upgrade to the Model 16.

At first, I thought it was a little flat/light sounding. But in time, I realized the sound produced from the Rockville was too Bass-Heavy. I used it for so long, hearing the excessive low frequencies became normal to me. The Model 16 helped me reset my sound pallet & EQ settings. It took me some time to find the perfect EQ setting to my liking but after a few weeks I finally got it! I now compare my Youtube videos where I used the Rockville and where I use the Model 16 and my sound is more balanced on the EQ spectrum now. Once I found the right sound adjustment, I started recording!

I realized using my stage mic (Senheiser MD 435) was not giving me the crisp studio sound I imagined on my vocals. Im an analog fanatic, as you can imagine, I don't use DAW's for editing, autotune, and plugins. I decided to buy an Aston Spirit Microphone to record my vocals. Using the Aston Mic and Compressing it with my Berhinger Multicom Pro through the insert connections gave me the perfect vocal sound I was looking for. The Tascam Model 16 had finally completed my musical workflow! It delivered a great sounding Demo of my songs. I even uploaded these Demos to Spotify, and let me just say "they do not fall behind to other artists high-end studio recordings." You get a great sound! They sound amazing in my truck! I included a video link of the recorded audio in this review. But like I said, I do all my instrument track recordings on my Kronos. The Model 16 brought together my live keyboard playing and Vocals with my recorded instrument tracks. I'm not a professional musician, I'm just a hobbyist keyboard player. For my use its PERFECT! Especially since I'm old school and don't use DAWs. However, If you are looking to do more in-depth detail recording, mastering of an entire band, this board won't help you with that.

That being said, I'm a firm believer that raw talent is what makes a great sounding track. That with a little EQ & compression. That's it! The Model 16 delivers just that- The essentials. Don't get me wrong, DAW's take your recordings and editing to another level when you are a profesional recording engineer. But I see videos of amateur musicians that use nothing but DAWs and rely completely on so many plug-ins, Auto-tune, copy/paste etc... You shouldn't have to rely on so many effects to make your recordings sound good. Part of making great music is rehearsing and enjoying the process. You perfect the craft of music making when you practice. The editing should only be the polish of the rehearsed recorded audio, the cherry on top. But that's just me. Hope this review helps.
