Distorted Bass Tones with Punch and Power

The Darkglass Microtubes X bass preamp pedal nails the recipe for powerful distorted bass that maintains low-end impact. The key to punchy distorted bass is allowing your mids and highs to provide the harmonic drive, while leaving your low fundamentals firm and undistorted. The Microtubes X pedal achieves this by splitting your signal to two variable filters before the gain stage, so you can shape your own unique drive tone with just the right combination of boom and bite. Regardless of how old your strings are, or how boomy or thin your bass may sound on its own, the Darkglass Microtube X bass preamp pedal delivers powerful, tight, defined bass tones.

Shape your tone with two variable filters

Before driving your tone, the Darkglass Microtubes X bass preamp splits your signal in two and filters each. A variable lowpass filter lets you choose how much of your signal remains clean and punchy, while a highpass filter determines how much of your tone will be sent through the drive circuit. A mix control allows you to balance each to your liking.

Active mid control for extensive sound-shaping potential

After the drive control, the final step in crafting your tone with the Microtubes X is its active mid control. Offering a ±12dB boost at 500Hz, Sweetwater bassists love using it to solidify their place in the mix. Alternatively, cutting the mid control helps make way for guitars in a dense mix.

Darkglass Microtubes X Bass Preamp Pedal Features:

  • Bass preamp and overdrive pedal
  • Splits your signal to 2 variable filters for tone shaping
  • Lowpass-filtered signal remains clean for maximum punch and fundamental impact
  • Highpass-filtered signal goes to the drive circuit for adding harmonic saturation
  • Mid control with active ±12dB boost control shapes your midrange at 500Hz

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Unbelievably cool stomp box!

Finally bass players can have clean lows and dirty highs without dragging a huge rack around! Put your favorite overdrive in front of this bad boy and magic happens. The dual crossover points and blend knob open up so many tonal possibilities!

X Marks the Spot

Amazed at how many different distortion tones I can get out of this pedal. Low-pass clean blended with distorted overdriven high-pass signal... can take you from a bit of accented growl to full-blown fuzz, or really odd stuff like clean sub-bass with super distorted higher overtones.

I tried the X7, but found that the four primary adjustment knobs on the X were a bit more to my taste (prefer the low-to-high mix knob rather than separate low level and high level). The Mids knob on the X accomplished 90% of what I wanted to get out of the EQ knobs in the X7 in a much quicker adjustment.

I would have liked the two filter knobs to be full size... but as designed the pedal is nice and compact and they're still easy to adjust.

Another great product from Darkglass!

Notes:
- I've enjoyed running my pbass into a compressor pedal (or other preamp) with an output level adjust, followed by the X. I use a Darkglass Super Symmetry compressor, but I'm sure lots of stuff would work. Cranking up the output level on the compressor will change the complexion of the distorted side signal on the X, but since the X has it's own output level you maintain the overall volume when stomping the compressor on and off :)

- When I first got the X, I looked for some tips online on how to adjust it, and ultimately came up with a sequence for that I like enough to share:

1) As a starting point, set Level to neutral, Drive to min, Mix all the way to Low, and Mids to neutral. This will make the output entirely clean.

2) Adjust the Low Pass trim until you get a satisfying amount of clean content. E.g. All the way to 50 Hz for just sub-bass, rolling up towards 500 Hz to get a fuller sound.

3) Set Mix all the way to High, so the output is entirely from the distortion side. Drive is still turned all the way down so it will sound mostly clean. Adjust the High Pass trim to find the signal you'd like to distort. Now roll up Drive and start to hear it distorted, make some adjustments to the trim, and iterate.

4) Adjust the Mix knob. Sometimes I start at entirely clean (low) and slowly add distortion. Sometimes I start at entirely distorted (high) and back it off, mixing in clean.

5) Adjust Mids up and down to change what distorted frequencies will come through with the most kick. E.g. low for really growly distortion, high for lots of overtones.

Really steps 4 and 5 are completely interchangeable, and once you have a basic setup it's great to go make small adjusts to everything. Or just set every knob and random and see what happens - you never know ;)

Amazing distortion!

I am forever chasing dirt and have used quite a few Darkglass pedals over the years. All of them have been excellent pedals in terms of build quality and the X is no exception. But where the X stands alone is the sheer *weight* it gives to the distortion. Being able to control the high pass and low pass frequencies gives you an amazing amount of control over the character of the distortion and allows you to dial in a heaviness that I've previously been unable to obtain with distortion pedals. I can't recommend this pedal enough. My only complaint is that I wish it had top jacks but I'll live with the side jacks in order to get the best distortion tone I've ever had!

Tone for Days

I've heard Darkglass pedals before and been blown away, but to get the sound in my head I would be looking for from any of them, I had to use the bigger, more expensive version for the extra control whenever I demoed them. This pedal took care of that problem in the smaller and less expensive format. The adjustable high and low pass filters paired with the mid knob and mix allow me to dial in a heavy hitting grit without losing anything in the lows and low mids. The fact that the drive knob doesn't change the output level is the icing on the cake with this thing. Do I want distortion so rough it'll sound like chainsaws in a blender? Got it, roll the drive to 11. Looking for a pushed SVT tone? Back off the knob to around 1 PM. Wanting just a little bit less or only using it for the filters and as a clean boost? Take it down further. I don't think you could find a more versatile dirt pedal anywhere near this size format.

It's pretty good

This definitely has a very aggressive distortion character. I find it works best with just a tiny bit of drive that isn't really noticed until you dig in. When you really turn up the gain, it becomes too compressed for my liking and shrinks the sound of the bass a bit. I don't know if it'll be on my board for a long time but it does sound cool.
