As a top tonewood, spruce offers a combination of strength and elasticity that delivers a broad dynamic range with crisp articulation that’s ideal for a wide range of playing styles from delicate fingerpicking to aggressive flatpicked strumming. As a body tonewood, mahogany generally serves up a focused sound with a full midrange; mahogany is treasured for its punchy midrange bloom and strongly focused, earthy, and somewhat dry fundamental without a preponderance of ringing overtones.
