Sets a New Benchmark for Desktop Audio Interfaces

A desktop audio interface without compromise, the Neumann MT 48 boasts off-the-charts specs and includes truckloads of studio-friendly features. For starters, the MT 48 is the only interface optimized for Neumann's renowned studio microphones and their outstanding KH-series studio monitors and NDH-series headphones. Beyond that, two premium-quality mic/line preamps, class-leading AD/DA, and enough I/O for a wide range of applications ensure pro-level sound quality and easy studio integration. You also get cutting-edge onboard DSP effects with flexible routing, plus an easy-to-read touchscreen for intuitive operation. The MT 48 not only gives you a pristine signal chain with zero bottlenecks, but it also supplies you with the state-of-the-art features you need to craft inspiring recordings. The Neumann name is as legendary as it gets in the studio world, and the MT 48 gives you everything you'd expect from an audio interface sporting the famous Neumann logo.

Delivers reference-class sound quality

The MT 48 is the first interface in its class to have the ability to capture the full dynamic range of Neumann's acclaimed microphones, and it's optimized especially for the company's KH-series studio monitors and NDH-series headphones. This USB-C audio interface's high-precision AD converters yield a jaw-dropping dynamic range of 136dB, and its low-noise mic preamps supply up to 78dB of gain. Crystal-clear analog circuitry, state-of-the-art AD/DA, superb onboard headphone amplifiers — the MT 48 sets a new benchmark for desktop audio interfaces.

Enough I/O for any application

No matter what type of project you're working on, the Neumann MT 48 can handle it. Its two mic/line preamps deliver enough juice to accommodate any gain-hungry microphone, and its two line/instrument inputs yield true reference-quality sound. You also get four analog outputs for your studio monitors and patching in outboard gear, plus two excellent-sounding headphone outputs. Need more I/O? No problem. The MT 48 supports ADAT, S/PDIF, and AES67 digital expansion. You also get onboard MIDI I/O (adapter required, sold separately).

Flexible built-in DSP and intuitive touchscreen control

The MT 48 includes built-in DSP, providing you with a fully parametric 4-band EQ, a feature-rich dynamics processor for each channel, and a studio-quality reverb. You can control four separate monitor mixes — with effects — directly from the unit's intuitive touchscreen. Moreover, you can use the MT 48's DSP for monitoring only, print the effects while you're recording, or do both simultaneously via the unit's Direct Output Technology. Here at Sweetwater, we appreciate that the MT 48 allows you to create an unprocessed backup during tracking. After all, accidents do happen! With the MT 48, you'll never lose a stellar performance because of an unfortunate EQ snafu.

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

I had been deceived all this time.

I cannot find better words to describe how I feel about this device. It's as if someone lifted a veil from my ears, allowing me to finally hear the truth. I know it might sound exaggerated, but it's not. From the moment I connected the device and played some music, my jaw dropped at the astounding sound quality. Then, when I connected my microphone and recorded something, I was blown away by the level of detail I had been missing before. This magic has a name: Neumann. They have recently entered the game, and mark my words, they are here to stay.

Goldilocks interface

I've been through quite a few interfaces that all have their pros and cons. To me this feels like the goldilocks solution for desktop units. The sound is to me the most important thing. Some people say conversion is all the same these days, but I have to disagree. While it's not going to necessarily make or break a song, there is definitely a difference between mid grade prosumer interface conversion and the higher end ones. The best I've heard was my Prism Lyra but this is very close to my ears. At first I wasn't particularly blown away with the sound, but the more I've used it I think it really is just incredibly transparent. It's not going to make your mix sound better than it is like some other units. If your mix is not very dynamic or generally flat then it will sound flat. For me, that's what I want to hear rather than a flattering sound in the studio that doesn't translate elsewhere. Listen to a great mix via tidal or WAV files and it sounds great. It really exposes other gear as well whether headphones, speakers, etc. The touchscreen is pretty good and very useful to not have to use the computer at all to tweak routing, muting, and levels. It's not quite as responsive as your smartphone but it works well. The built in reverb and compressor is not that great sounding to my ears (very clinical) and I hope they add more options for reverb, delay, de-esser, etc. The EQ does sound great and can be used on all inputs and outputs which is great. All in... I think the software side could be enhanced a bit as it feels a little slow at times, but the feature set and sound in such a small package deserves 5 stars. For anyone saying it's too expensive should look at the cost of the adi-2 pro, lyra, symphony desktop, etc. It's not cheap, but for what you're getting I think it's fair and there's nothing else on the market I've seen that matches it.

The king of desktop interfaces

The bar was set high for the mt48 when it was announced. I mean, it has the neumann name on it. I expect nothing but the best, right?.. well i can say i was not let disappointed.
I have a recording studio at home and don't need more than two mics recording simultaneously . I was looking for top quality sound with innovative technology that can sit on my desk and not take up too much space. That can last for at least 8-10 years and i found it.

The sound of the mt48 is very natural and has that 3d image that you get from high end converters. Ive had apollos, apogees, and lynx. They are all great and have a particular sound to them. I personally prefer the apogee and now the mt48 sound with the mt48 taking the lead due to its features and for me slighter better sound.
I will say it took neumann two updates to get things where they are now but it was worth the wait.
The preamps are so good it makes me think if i need analogue preamps. They are not digital sounding, they are very true to the source. High head room and great image. Throw in onboard eq, compressor and reverb you can track with and you start to think about selling your outboard gear.
The user interface took me a little bit to get used to and figure out but once you get there is no looking back.
Headphone preamps GREAT, di… GREAT…
If you are looking for the best desktop interface you have found it.

Loving my MT 48!

When my Intel iMac died recently and I upgraded to an M2 Studio, I decided to also try a new audio interface. My first-gen Apollo Twin had done good service, but I got tired of fiddling with the plug-in settings. An interface with usable built-in dynamics and EQ was a priority. I tried the Rode Duocaster — which sounded pretty good, but was returned when the unit died after about ten hours of use.

I somehow found this Neumann. Had to wait for it — and thanks to Tad Schafer for snagging me one. I've fallen "stone in love" with this baby. I mix on Metric Halo ULN8 3Ds, so I'm pretty spoiled in the good sound department. But with the MT, I felt I was hearing my mixes for the first time — it literally brought tears to my eyes. Conversely, the mistakes in my mixes were also more apparent — everything is more clear and present. The MT removes the haze in a musical and non-hyped way — and sends it through its delicious headphone amp to drive my HD600s.

There are a few minor niggles, which are apparent in the several YouTube reviews of this unit. But some former software mini-bugs have already been fixed, and for me the unit is completely usable. (And no apparent fan noise, as some have experienced.) I happened to meet the MT/Neumann Product Owner at AES in October here in NYC. Nice guy and a musician — and seemed responsive to my suggestion of putting a mute button on the top mixer view page.

I contacted Neumann support when I stumbled in getting the line/mic inputs routed properly to USB. The service guy with whom I corresponded was friendly, consistently responsive, and patient — and got me sorted out in short order.

I have received much good gear over the years from SW — kudos again to Tad — but this is the first one that moved me to share my experiences. The MT 48 is a keeper, a really sweet and useful little box.

Best Sounding Home Audio Interface I've Ever Used

I've used almost exclusively the highest end MOTU interfaces in my home studio before this and was looking for something different while not sacrificing sound quality. The mic preamps, headphone amps, converters, and overall sound quality of this interface are amazing. I could immediately tell an improvement even after using the famous MOTU ESS Sabre32 converters for four years. Everything is more open and detailed. The touch interface is a little clunky but quite powerful and easy to use after you learn it. The recording and routing capabilities are perfect for a hybrid studio with outboard analog gear like mine. People who give this phenomenal piece of Neumann professional equipment a bad review because the unit gets warm or because it takes a minute to boot up should be taken as seriously as any Karen. If you want to produce music that sounds professional and you insist on having the best sounding, most flexible and powerful tools, this is an excellent choice. The results sing for themselves.
