The Epitome of Modern Bass Performance

Intuitively designed, expertly crafted, and boasting utmost tonal versatility, the Ibanez Mode MDM1606 embodies everything modern bassists seek to properly harness the capacity of their talent and creativity. The proof? A sculpted, lightweight alder body is joined by a roasted maple neck, topped with a 24-fret rosewood fingerboard, for a playing experience so smooth that it's only matched by the MDM1606's blacked-out hardware and captivating low gloss finish. Sonically, a dutiful set of Delta S6J single-coil pickups, a 3-band EQ complete with a push-pull EQ bypass switch and a 3-way Mid-frequency switch, and an extensive set of Ibanez hardware provide a vast soundscape for exacting your low-end sound. From modern metal forays to clean jazz licks and beyond, the Mode MDM1606 delivers any bass tone imaginable with confidence and ease. Modern, versatile, and equally stunning in both sound and sight, it's no surprise that many Sweetwater bassists have already made the MDM1606 their go-to bass for gigs and studio sessions.

A pro-level instrument for the dedicated player

Anchored by an ergonomic alder body, the Ibanez Mode MDM1606 boasts a lightweight, easily navigable profile, ideal for double-encore sets and extended recording sessions. Likewise, a roasted maple neck sculpted into an MDM6 profile, complete with a deluxe satin finish, ensures you'll have seamless access to all 24 frets of the rosewood fingerboard. And while the low gloss finish and blacked-out hardware bestow the MDM1606 with quite the striking aesthetic, simply picking up this bass will instantly remind you that it is designed for the front lines.

Total tonal authority

The MDM1606 is ready to tackle any sonic challenge, courtesy of two onboard Delta S6J single-coil pickups. These hum-cancelling pickups are designed specifically for versatility, capable of covering the spectrum from clean, pop-based thump to warm jazz sway to gritty, driven grooves. The Mode MDM1606's capabilities are further enhanced by the inclusion of Master Tone and Volume controls, a 3-band EQ for active tonal sculpting, an EQ bypass switch for passive directness, and a 3-way Mid-frequency switch driven by a Hexa Mid system.

Ibanez: a brief history

Ibanez’s obsessive attention to detail has made the company a global guitar and bass powerhouse, but it didn’t happen overnight. Ibanez began its life in 1908 as the Hoshino Gakki company in Nagoya, Japan. However, the company didn’t get into the guitar business until 1929, when it started importing Salvador Ibanez guitars from Spain. In 1935, Hoshino Gakki began building Spanish acoustic guitars under the “Ibanez Salvador” name, which was later shortened to Ibanez. Although Ibanez started manufacturing electric guitars in 1957, the company was relatively unknown in the West until the 1960s, when it started producing guitars based on American designs. By the late 1970s, Ibanez began manufacturing the innovative, original guitar and bass designs that the company is now known for. The company is also famous for its effect pedals, most notably the Tube Screamer. Sweetwater is proud to offer you such a fine line of distinguished musical instruments.

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Reviews

Don’t sleep on this one….
First off, let me say that I like this bass more than all my other basses, even my higher end Ibanez basses (SR6605, SR5006, ANB306, etc).
I bought this bass and didn't have Sweetwater set it up and it came definitely NEEDING a good setup. Action was pretty high and the main thing it needed was the nut slots cut down a bit, which was easy for me to do. <——— This is the only negative thing about my particular MDM1606, which is why I docked half a star.

The way this bass sits against my body, the way the neck feels, the resonance when playing it, FAR surpasses the feel of any other bass in my collection. The shape of the neck is perfect for my hands.
The new tuners are the smoothest turning I've ever felt on a bass.
The tone is pretty close to an actual jazz bass but a bit more modern and in passive mode it's a bit more polite than the actual single coils in a jazz bass. Pickups/preamp are nice and quiet.
Fit and finish is pretty good, especially for the price….I'd compare it to the premium line, but definitely not as good as the prestige line.
The tonal options that you can get out of this bass are awesome, especially with the addition of the separate tone control.
If I were to recommend any Ibanez bass to someone, I'd skip the SR and BTB series and go straight to the Mode series. For the price, features, and the tone/playability, Ibanez really knocked this new series out of the park!
IBANEZ HAS A HIT WITH THE MODE BASS
I'll be the first to leave a review. This bass is easily one of the best "bang for your buck" instruments I've played. You get so much for what you pay for that it's hard to find anything negative to say without being extremely picky. You can literally play any genre because the bass is so versatile and powerful. I'd much rather have too much power and have to tone it down than not have enough and feel capped out. The neck is thin, allowing for fast play, and the included finger ramp is a big plus for players like me. I'm definitely happy with my purchase, and I can see Ibanez selling a ton of these. I have no doubt this is the beginning of a wave with the mode basses and once more people hear the word through video reviews, this bass will constantly be backordered.
Sweet Tone... but
This bass has a great preamp with great tone. Unfortunately the fit and finish weren't up to snuff. The neck was uncomfortable for me. The truss rod action was maxed out leaving me with more relief than I like. It's not worth the money in my opinion. I returned it.
