The Incomparable McCarty 594 Hollowbody II

The PRS McCarty 594 Hollowbody II electric guitar is built to perform as great as it looks. Its distinctively figured top and back are carved from figured maple; the sides are mahogany — a tonewood cocktail that delivers extraordinary clarity and warm resonance. The Hollowbody II also features a very comfortable Pattern Vintage mahogany neck and a rosewood fingerboard adorned with beautiful Bird inlays. Oversize f-holes and two toneful TCI-tuned 58/15 LT humbucking pickups round out the feature set. For sheer elegance, playability, versatility, and amazing tone, the PRS McCarty 594 Hollowbody II is a sure-fire bet.

Handcrafted from premium tonewoods

Handcrafted by PRS's elite luthiers, the McCarty 594 Hollowbody II uses only premium tonewoods: gorgeously figured maple for the top and back, mahogany for the sides. This particular combination yields a clear, yet resonant tone that suits any musical style. The mahogany neck is topped with a smooth rosewood fingerboard adorned with exclusive PRS artist bird inlays.

Pattern Vintage profile neck for enhanced playability

Some of the least visible but most powerful features of the 594 Hollowbody II include a neck feel that maximizes performance and comfort with an asymmetrical Pattern Vintage profile — a favorite among guitarists at Sweetwater. Though much like their Pattern profile, PRS's Pattern Vintage carve is slightly thicker to fill your hand in just the right way. And the strings will always feel silky smooth when playing and bending due to the guitar's 24.594" signature McCarty scale length — the origin of the "594" in the model name.

Drink in this guitar's rich, organic vintage voice

When you plug this guitar into your favorite amp, you will be enveloped in a rich, organic vintage tone. This is the warm and clear sonic elixir that propelled the original 58/15 pickups to the top of many guitarists' favorite PAF-style humbucker lists. 58/15 LT pickups are based on that successful design, but they're wound with fewer wire turns for even more clarity and nuance. This guitar's electronics setup features the traditional 4-pot configuration, which gives you independent control of each pickup's volume and tone. Pulling up on each tone knob engages single-coil operation for that pickup, which means this axe can serve up any electric guitar tone you could ever need. From jazz and fusion to blues, rock, and country; from chimey rhythm parts to blistering leads — and everything in between — the PRS McCarty 594 Hollowbody II delivers.

it's a perfect hollow body guitar

First, this guitar is everything you expect from a PRS core McCarty: the attention to detail is fantastic, the finish is beautiful, the scale is lovely and easy to play. If you're thinking about a hollow body, you know all this stuff already, and you won't be disappointed. The whale blue is a great color; it's a little like an old pair of jeans. It's a mellow and interesting color, but not too ostentatious. The interesting part for me is the tone: how does this guitar differ from PRS solid or semi-hollowbodies, and how does it differ from other famous hollow/semi-hollow electric guitars? Here are my thoughts:

The other guitars I've been playing a lot are an ES-335, a special semi-hollow, and an Epiphany Zephyr anniversary (I play a lot of Jazz). The semi-hollow is the smallest and lightest guitar here and by far the most comfortable. It's really lovely to have a guitar that's this light; I'm old enough to have random shoulder/back pain, and a lighter instrument that I can position easily makes a big difference.

The hollow has a chunkier neck than the semi-hollow (or other PRS), but that's not all bad. I still find it pretty easy to play, and feel it's worth it for the tone tradeoff. I have big hands, and kinda hate playing the Gibson. I can do it, but it's a little hard to finger weird chords between narrow string gaps; I prefer the PRS spacing and scale length. I love the McCarty scale length; the slightly slack strings really lend themselves to expression (it's really easy to get subtle vibrato). I do think the special semi-hollow is a little easier to play than the hollow body ii (thinner, faster neck) for some music, but it's not the biggest deal.

But the thing that's most amazing about this guitar is the natural tone. My god, this guitar just rings out forever; notes just last longer than any of my other guitars. The special semi-hollow is a close second (it rings out almost forever). The pickups are lovely and work as expected; you can dial in a huge variety of sounds with the two pickups. As you might expect, you can't quite equal the semi-hollow in flexibility (that guitar has far more variation, and it feels like you can change faster). I can get a great range of clean sounds, from classic jazz tones (neck pickup, tone turned down), to more traditional rock/blues sounds (pretty much anything else) without much work. I play this guitar a lot through a Roland Jazz Chorus, and it's just a perfect combination. I can't make this thing sound bad; everything just works.

After getting this guitar, I sold the ES-335. I just could not find any reason to ever play it; the PRS is easier to play, does more, and sounds better. It's a more expensive instrument, but a much better one. I do still alternate between this and the special semi-hollow. I think the special is a crazy Swiss-army knife guitar that can kinda sound like a Gibson ES, or a Les Paul, or a Strat, or pretty much anything else you want; it does more stuff, but doesn't have quite as rich a tone as the hollow body ii.

If you're thinking about this guitar, you're not going to be disappointed.
Music background: 30+ years of playing

You don't even have to play guitar to know that PRS instruments are in a league of their own. With their exquisitely figured tops and premium appointments, each PRS is a playable work of art. But it goes way deeper than the surface. Every time Paul visits Sweetwater, we get a deeper look at his amazing instruments. We've even hosted several PRS Custom Shop events, complete with Paul's personal Wood Library! Whether they're his most affordable SE electric guitars, top-quality acoustics, or amps, it's always amazing to see what PRS comes up with. What's more, we keep a ton of PRS guitars in our amazing Guitar Showroom, so the staff at Sweetwater can get hands on with all of their latest models. We'd love to tell you all about them.
