Multidimensional Stereo Sculpting and Shimmering Sustain

Cascading soundscapes abound with the MXR Layers. This pedal powerhouse delivers a suite of multidimensional stereo shaping that fuses versatile expression with aural exploration. Beneath the iconic MXR form factor resides an unprecedentedly diverse array of sonic contouring capabilities, conjuring up to three lush layers of harmonic orchestration, each of which can be generated or deleted on the fly. Users around Sweetwater have immediately noted the MXR Layers pedal’s flexibility, not just for its use across multiple instruments, but also in its stereo output options and external control compatibility. Shimmering choruses and robust reverbs collide with sonorous sustain and a deluge of delay, augmented by the onboard sub-octave generator that can be adjusted across multiple transposition modes, including a crossover option, lending immense support to the low end by isolating lower frequencies. With its malleable attack and decay parameters, alongside dynamic trigger thresholds, activating evocative stereo washes and frozen pads is possible with pick attack alone or through the multifunction footswitch. Conversely, you can put the two together, allowing you to craft complex, reactive sound-stacking walls of noise or mind-melting solos that are undergirded by cavernous sub-octave support. No matter your style, the MXR Layers pedal unequivocally expands your constellation of multidimensional composition possibilities.

Stacked sonics and versatile voicing

The MXR Layers pedal is designed to mimic the natural resonance qualities of physical strings, meaning that higher frequencies decay before lower ones do. Through flexible attack and decay controls, combined with a dialed-in trigger threshold sensitivity, your picking intensity becomes the catalyst for everything from stutter-like short-term delay to vast multi-octave choruses of shimmering harmonic depth and literally infinite sustain. Expanding further voicing possibilities, the pedal’s layering and sub-octave controls can be adjusted independently, letting you toggle single- or multi-layer sustain for robust flexibility in sonic support.

Another layer deeper: effects, CTR, and external control

Because the Layers pedal thrives on experimentation, its multifaceted tools can be tailored for virtually limitless sound sculpting opportunities. Thanks to the CTR output, external switches, as well as keyboard sustain or expression pedals, can be used to toggle settings, sweep through two different setting configurations, or adjust individual parameters, giving you unrivaled tactile interfacing that suits all manners of use or instrumentation, from stage-based stomp-boxing to desktop-effects studio work. For those seeking the furthest reaches of advanced attenuation, pressing and holding the single-layer or sub-octave buttons opens additional lanes of fine-tuning to your layers. Delay intervals can be increased or decreased. Additionally, complex multimode configurations of modulated chorus, tremolo, delay, and diffusion can be variably injected into your layers, with aural immersion augmented by the adjustable panning available to the stereo field when used in Stereo Output mode.

MXR Layers Features:

  • Multitudes of sustain, delay, chorus, reverb, and tremolo varieties collide for a deeply customizable multi-effects pedal
  • Selectable stereo and mono operation modes provide extensive stereo-field possibilities across other instruments
  • Up to 3 simultaneous layers of sustain and a dedicated sub-octave function ensure vast orchestration potential
  • Malleable layering options enable you to split sub-octave designations and single-layer mode for evocative full-spectrum sound stacking
  • State-of-the-art circuitry supplies detailed, high-fidelity sustain that faithfully mimics physical string resonance properties for natural layering and intuitive use
  • Wide-ranging, detailed attack and delay parameters allow for versatile space shaping and temporal texturizing
  • Precise trigger values let you automatically generate and remove layers through the intensity of your pick attack, leading to immensely reactive performance potential
  • Flexible footswitch usage lets you painlessly manage layers in any studio, stage, desktop, or tabletop configurations
  • External interfacing options via CTR jack lets you blend across 2 setting configurations, control individual parameters, or customize your tactile needs
  • Advanced parameter for further expand sonic contouring and texturization opportunities
What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Reviews

Great pedal
I'm really enjoying my mxr layers pedal. I always have a great experience with Sweetwater, it's definitely the best way to buy music gear online.
The Best!
I've been using Sweetwater's services for many years now. They're simply the best I have come across in any category of product. Amazing people
Music background: Blues-Rock, Jazz, Blues, Indo-Jazz Fusion
New standard for Freeze fx
How does this pedal not have more reviews? I have Tried almost all of the more commercial freeze pedals and this one by far is the easiest to use, sounds the best /truest and keeps the low-end. The onboard fx are perfectly curated and tone of fun to play with. The delay is uniquely musical. Layers is so much fun. 10/10 MXR
Music background: Drums, bass, pedals.
almost
I use clean to light breakup guitar with not a lot of effects but I like an ambience underneath it all sometimes when when playing lead in a trio. I have done this with looping ambience, delays, hold delays, super ego, mccmilon 12 step... this has really good set-and-forget it sounds. really great sounds but I have 3 problems all having to do with turning it off

really unfortunate their isn't a tail/trail when turning off

The fadeaway curve has options but they all include the curve dropping off the edge at the end. you have to hit a chord when turning off to mask the abrupt cut off

when you turn off you have to hit it twice but I get the timing wrong making for awkward tap dancing. I don't use the layer feature that the stomp pedal does this for so its only annoying that I can't turn off the pedal with 1 stomp.

in response to review that says its noisy - it is when you daisy the power. it needs its own power source. Even when paired with a low power pedal such as analog overdrive or a tuner it adds hum when daisied
Noisy
It's a lot of fun to play with, but it is really noisy on my board in my basement, even when turned off. I had to add a noise gate after it.
