Single-cut Special with P-90 Pickups and a Period Neck

Countless players have found the Gibson Les Paul Special, with its lightweight design and unique tonal response, to be easy to pick up yet impossible to put down. So it is with today’s Les Paul Special; its easy-gigging weight and P-90 chunk ’n’ chime will earn this guitar a special place in any serious guitarist’s collection. A breathable nitrocellulose lacquer finish, handwired electronics, and a vintage ’50s mahogany neck make this single-cut a dead ringer for yesterday’s sought-after classics. Yet modern performance options, which include a factory fret Plek treatment, make today’s Gibson Les Paul Special a force to be reckoned with.

Lightweight mahogany body

Originally released in 1955 as a lighter alternative to the back-breaking Les Paul Standard, the solid-mahogany Gibson Les Paul Special has given players a tone, response, and comfort all its own. Today’s Les Paul Special packs all the appeal of the timeless design in a great-playing and well-equipped modern form.

Nitro lacquer finish

Like the original, this Les Paul Special comes finished in a lightweight nitrocellulose lacquer. Nitro finishes are significantly thinner than modern polyurethane finishes. Not only is this approach period-correct, but some also suggest that this allows the guitar to “breathe” for improved sonics and, over time, to take on the look of a lovingly cared-for classic.

P-90 pickups with Orange Drop caps

If you consider yourself among the ranks of the many fiercely loyal P-90 fans, as so many of us here at Sweetwater do, you already know the unique tonal palette this pickup pairing brings to the iconic Les Paul Special. It’s an amazingly versatile sound with its own brand of grit — a bit brighter, leaner, and less refined than a humbucker, though almost as hot. Hit your amp hard, and the Les Paul Special’s P-90s really wail. Plugged into a proper tube amp, you can elicit grind, sizzle, and bark that would be impossible to achieve with other more common pickup types. Handwired controls complete with classic-era Orange Drop capacitors round out the GIbson Les Paul Special’s choice electronics.

Plek’d for precision playability

The Gibson Les Paul Special plays fast and precise right out of the case, thanks in large part to its Plek fret treatment. Typically reserved for top-dollar custom guitars, this computer-guided process levels frets with pinpoint precision, providing one of the most consistent fingerboards you’ll ever own. Each note rings loud and clear, and the fret edges feel as smooth as silk. With today’s Les Paul Special playing and sounding as great as it does, it’ll be hard to justify spending money on a vintage model.

Gibson Les Paul Special Left-handed Solidbody Electric Guitar Features:

  • A single-cut Special with P-90 pickups and a period neck
  • Classic, lightweight mahogany slab body
  • Hand-filling vintage ’50s mahogany neck
  • Rosewood fingerboard with Plek’d medium jumbo frets
  • 2 single-coil P-90 pickups
  • Handwired with Orange Drop capacitors
  • Breathable nitrocellulose lacquer finish

Why Buy Your Guitar from Sweetwater?

See how Sweetwater goes to great lengths to give you the very best online guitar buying experience. From our online Guitar Gallery that allows you to see and select the exact instrument you want to our 55-point Inspection process and our in-house guitar techs, we take the guesswork out of buying your next guitar online.

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Great guitar

This is a super guitar. Granted, I prefer a slim neck and this one is fairly chunky, but it plays and sounds great. I love it.

Pleased

Very much impressed with this guitar. This is the first p90 guitar I have purchased or played and I understand fully what all the hype is about. The guitar is just perfect. I was originally turned off by the color but after understanding the classic look and vibe it entails I've really grown to love this thing. The fat 50s style neck is great. I have another Les Paul with the 60s slim neck and the chunky one really just fits the classic vide the guitar has. Awesome!

Awesome Guitar!

This guitar is a rock and roll machine!

I had been itching for something a little different from my other guitars, and when I saw this was offered in a left-handed configuration, I knew I had to have it. Don't be put off by the fact that this is a relatively cheap model compared to the rest of the Gibson line-up. This is NOT a low-end guitar, it is a quality instrument.

Also, I'm not usually a fan of the color yellow, but this TV yellow finish with the wood grain peeking through is gorgeous.

The P90s in this are phenomenal! Very articulate pickups. With a little gain, these things growl and sizzle and bark just the way you want. And the volume and tone controls are very responsive. You can go from crunchy overdrive to fairly clean with just a twist of the volume knob. Very fun.

Upon close inspection, there are a few minor cosmetic issues with my guitar, but nothing that affects the feel or playability at all. The guitar feels and plays so good, and sounds just as amazing. The pros far outweigh the cons, in my opinion. And, as always, the team at Sweetwater was a pleasure to work with. They had me sorted right away.

Overall, if you're on the fence at all about this guitar, my advice would be to just buy it. You'll be glad you did. It's a great guitar, and very inspiring to play.

Blown Away!

This guitar has the sound and feel of rock n roll hands down. There aren't enough words to describe how inspiring it is to play this guitar.

It's a beast all it's own. Need a setup? Sweetwater has you covered. I had them tweak my setup (While I waited) free of charge and it's perfect.

Get one and prepare to be amazed and inspired.
Music background: Guitar, Bass, keys, production, having a blast.

FINALLY, I have what I always wanted!

When I saw the Gibson Special in TV Yellow and that they offered a lefty I went into action immediately. Called Sweetwater and spoke with a great sales rep named Grant. He answered all of my questions and gave some great advice. I had to figure out how to get the Gibson to my home without my wonderful wife and the 100 questions followed by a blistering cross examination. Well The day came and the delivery truck pulled up, and when my wife asked what came to the house I told her that it was her Christmas present. In any event my wife got her presents and I received my guitar with the blistering cross examination. Thank you Sweetwater and thank you Grant.
Music background: A hack, garage band

From rockers to jazz cats, there are generations of guitarists right here at Sweetwater who swear by Gibson guitars. Not only do they make many of the most iconic solidbody electric guitars of all time - the Les Paul, the SG, the Flying V - but they also produce classic hollowbody and semi-hollowbody models and some of the most iconic acoustic guitars on the planet. We play them all! Our close relationship with Gibson often allows us to stock exclusive models and rare finds, and we're always happy to turn players and collectors on to the gems in the Sweetwater Guitar Gallery. We also have access to all the latest Gibson hardware, and the Sweetwater Guitar Repair Shop has upgraded countless guitars with their top-of-the-line humbuckers, classic P-90s, and more.
