This Fuzz Pedal Will Put a Smile on Your Face

From the JHS Legends of Fuzz series of vintage-inspired fuzz pedals, the Smiley is a spot-on re-creation of a classic silicon fuzz pedal that is inextricably linked to the incendiary guitar tones of Jimi Hendrix. Josh Scott and the team at JHS pored over Josh’s personal collection of wide-smiling fuzz boxes to create Smiley, calling up the blistering sustain and formidable crunch heard on Jimi’s records as well as on countless other tracks from the likes of David Gilmour, Eric Clapton, Eric Johnson, and Jack White. Guitarists at Sweetwater have stomped the faces of numerous iterations of the Smiley’s iconic predecessor, and this is one of the finest versions we’ve ever heard — aggressive, sonorous, and dripping with vintage mojo. Take it from us: the JHS Smiley is guaranteed to have you grinning from ear to ear!

Commanding lead tones and hearty rhythmic crunch

A minimalist fuzz box, the Smiley has only two knobs — Volume and Fuzz — but it’s packed with a face full of tone. Its distinctive midrange attack and weighty low end lend gravity to lead lines, and when you roll back your guitar’s volume knob, it has a clean crunch that's perfect for rhythm playing. The Smiley also has a new trick: the JHS Mode button blasts the Smiley into high gain and grinds out gnarly gated-fuzz effects. Like all the Legends of Fuzz pedals, the Smiley is housed in a stunning custom wedge-shaped bent-metal enclosure with throwback knobs and full-metal badge plates — an old-school look to match its old-school tone.

The JHS Legends of Fuzz Series

According to JHS founder Josh Scott, the invention of fuzz pedals was one of the most significant events in the history of the electric guitar and popular music. JHS has been creating innovative fuzz boxes for over a decade, but this time around they’ve chosen to pay tribute to the great fuzz boxes of the past. The JHS Legends of Fuzz series features period-accurate re-creations of some of the most famous fuzz circuit designs of all time, with a few JHS-exclusive twists. As these original fuzz pedals have become increasingly rare, prices of working units on the collectors’ market have skyrocketed, making them inaccessible to most players. Now, with JHS’s Legend of Fuzz pedals, players from all walks of life will be able to enjoy these storied tone machines and experience the magic of some of the finest fuzz boxes ever produced.

JHS Smiley Fuzz Pedal Features:

  • Faithful rendition of a classic silicon fuzz box
  • Biting mids and weighty, sustaining lows
  • Roll back your guitar’s volume knob for crisp, crunchy overdrive
  • Minimalist fuzz box with Volume and Fuzz controls
  • JHS Mode button provides a high-gain boost and gated-fuzz effects
  • Housed in a custom wedge-shaped bent-metal enclosure
  • Vintage-style knobs and full-metal badge plate
  • Optional battery power for authentic vintage operation

What is Demo Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call a "demo" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

What demo means to us is that we've had it out of the box, or maybe it was in a customer's hands for a few days and isn't "factory fresh" as a result. Every demo item we sell has Sweetwater's 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty, and has been tested and verified up to "new" specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it's in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Demo item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Just like old school fuzz pedals

It's gonna be loud and uncontrollable at times, but that's part of the uniqueness of these old circuits. You have to be willing to experiment with it and do a little wrangling to get the sound you want. Go with a digital multi effect board if you can't handle it.

Made in USA

I thought I wanted another Fuzz Face like I had in 70's. After buying a couple China made products I researched a little found JHS is USA product, I bought it. Like it better than old fuzz face much better.

Fun Pedal

If you are looking for the classic Hendrix sounds with the added bonus of a twist, this pedal is for you. Instantly after plugging it in and activating it, it is sheer fun. The Mode button creates a gated fuzz to cut out noise when playing at higher volume and gives it a unique tone that is great to be creative with. You won't be disappointed if you add this pedal to your arsenal.

Awesome

It's a fuzz face circuit. That said, it sounds great! Nice and thick but can be tamed easily with the volume knob. Build quality is great as always with JHS. If you're looking for a vintage style fuzz face, this is it!

Pretty Awesome

This was my first Fuzz Face style pedal, and I can't say I'm disappointed. I think Josh knocked it out of the park. It can get pretty noisy, but I think that's probably fairly true to the original circuit, as the guys at JHS were trying to accomplish. I've never played through an original, but regardless it's a great sound, even if there are ever so slight differences. Love the wedge design, not the biggest fan of not being able to see where the knobs are but it still looks cool. Also wish it were a softer switch, but I also understand those are more expensive, and again they were trying to be true to the originals. Definitely recommend it! I want to try the rest of the series now.
Music background: Worship guitar, basement jams
